I guess it was inevitable that I’d be on hockey skates at some point in my

life, but I did not expect that I’d become one of a rare group of female ice

hockey officials before I even reached high school. Being born into a family of

hockey players and figure skaters, it seemed that my destiny had already been

decided.

Right from the beginning, my two older brothers and my father strapped me

up and threw me onto the ice. I loved it and, in my mind, I was on my way to

becoming a female Gretzky! But my mom had to think of something fast to drag her

little girl away from this sport of ruffians. Enter my first hot pink figure

skating dress! That was all it took to launch fifteen years of competitive

figure skating. Even though figure skating soon became my passion, I always had

an unsatisfied yearning for ice hockey. It took a great deal of convincing from

my parents that competitive figure skating and ice hockey didn’t mix. My

compromise became refereeing ice hockey; little did I know that I was beginning

an activity that would influence my character and who I am today. When I began,

I would only work with my dad and brothers. Everyone was friendly and accepting

because I had just started. I soon realized though that to get better I needed

to start refereeing with people I wasn’t related to, and that’s when my

experience drastically changed. An apologetic smile and an “I’m sorry” wasn’t

going to

get me through games now. As I began officiating higher-level games and

dealing with more arrogant coaches, I suddenly entered a new male-dominated

world, a world I had never experienced before. My confidence was shot, and all I

wanted to do was get through each game and be able to leave. Sometimes I was

even too scared to skate along the teams’ benches because I would get upset by

what the coaches would yell to me. “Do you have a hot date tonight, ref?” was a

game. In their eyes, I did not belong on that ice, and they were going to do

whatever they could do to make sure no women wanted to officiate their games. I

was determined not to let them chase me off the ice.

I made the decision to stand up for myself. I never responded rudely to the

coaches, but I did not let them walk all over me and destroy my confidence

anymore. I started to act and feel more like the 4-year certified Atlantic

District Official that I am. There were still a few situations that scared me.

One time I called a penalty in a championship game during the third overtime and

the team I penalized ended up losing because they got scored on. I knew I had

made the right call, even though I was unnerved when I saw the losing teams’

parents waiting for me at my locker room; for the moment I wished I hadn’t

called that penalty. Although it was scary at the time, I stood my ground and

overcame my fears. That was an important

stepping-stone in my officiating career and in my life.

After four years of refereeing, I still can’t say it’s easy. Every game

hands me something new and I never know what to expect. Now I have the

confidence and preparation to deal with the unexpected, on and off the ice. I

now also know to take everything with a grain of salt and not let it get to me.

I have learned that life is just like being out on the ice; if I am prepared and

act with confidence, I will be perceived as confident. These are the little

lessons that I’m grateful to have learned as a woman referee.

Things to Notice About This Essay

1. The author tells an interesting story about her experiences as a

referee.

2. A sense of her personality—determination, flexibility, good humor—comes

through in the narration.

3. Details like “Do you have a hot date tonight, ref?” make the narration

memorable (we’d love to hear more of these kinds of details).

4. The essay needs a faster start. The first paragraph (three sentences)

says the same thing in both the first and third sentences—and gives away the

essay’s surprise in the second! A good revision would all of paragraph one and

start at paragraph two.

5. There’s too much frame here and not enough picture. The essay needs

further development, especially about the difficulties of

becoming and being a ref, to keep it vivid.

6. The author should “dwell” in the meaning of the experience a little more

at the end—“I wonder about…I also think…Sometimes I believe….” Significant

experiences like this one, woven through many years of the author’s life, don’t

mean just one thing—there are more insights and lessons to explore here.

一直以来，我都很关心学生会工作和发展，在此我提出三个自己关于学生会工作想法：第一个是学生会内部考核工作，包括对各部门负责人，各部门干事，成员考核。我在这里提出问题不是单纯考勤制度。而是应该包括监督，督促，鼓励和引导。有时存在一个问题就是各个上级没有很好起模范带头作用，没有给下面成员和干事带好头，出现一些负责人和干事做事没有热情，积极性不好，工作时只是在敷衍了事，总是在等事做而不是找事做。

监督和督促视为了给部门负责人一定压力，提高对各部么成员重视程度。可以包括适当批评和建议；鼓励和引导时为了提高成员工作积极性和热情，让他们有家感觉。可以做到以部门负责人身份经常和干事，成员交流对学习和工作看法了解他们生活和学习状况，给予关心鼓励，积极引导他们想着积极方向努力和发展。

具体实施可以分为定期考核和随时考核。考核内容可以分为思想作风方面；工作任务完成方面；工作能力，工作实绩方面；以及工作态度方面。

其中工作能力考核又可以分为：是否对每次工作有所计划；是否能够统筹安排且妥当；方法是否正确；是否能够很好协调下属之间合作关系做到知人善任；是否能够正确处理号个人与集体关系？

考核结果可以作为学生会干部任免，奖惩依据之一，而不是以往按照上级部门个人喜好来推荐干部。并可以以此来评选学生会工作“先进个人和部门”。以此促进考核落实和提高大家积极性。通过此考核，来提高各部门干部成员综合素质，发扬优点，提高工作效率。更好将整个委员会紧密联系在一起，改变松散无序，没有竞争状况。以此达到每个成员都能代表教育学院学生会风采境界。

第二个想法是学生会与班级之间未能建立良好有效合作机制，表现在两个方面：一是学生会工作很难落实到各个班级，没能借助各个班级力量，毕竟学生会力量有限，各项工作仅靠自己内部力量去完成有一定难度。我是班级班长，从班级同学角度来看，有时学生会通知不能及时传达到班级；每次活动也没有很多参与，积极性不是很高，委员会也未能征求各个班级意见和建议。另一方面，从班级角度来看，班级活动具有局限性，每次活动或想法都是在本班范围之内，未能很好借助于学生会力量来扩大影响范围。无法体现全院学生有机联系，只是各自奋斗，不能体现全院整体性。这缘于班级和学生会之间没有一个互助、合作机制。

具体解决可以从几个方面出发，一，在委员会中设立专门联络员。与班级中固定人员如班长或团支书进行联系，对班级一定时期内想法、建议和创意进行了解。使班级和学生会之间有固定联系方式，而不至于宣传或传达处于混乱状态。二、在每次大型活动中让各个班级都参与策划，让班级在活动中提供帮助。在细节上使班级和学生会联系在一起。这样既能提高学生积极性，又能使各个班级与学生会保持联系，扩大受益面。例如在迎新晚会中就不是只看到学生会成员自己在忙，而是让更多同学参与进来，但这是在各司其职，有秩序前提下进行。另外，学生会成员在各自班级中也要保持良好形象和威信，使同学们增加对学生会信任和支持。

学生会与班级进一步合作，是一个双赢做法。更多同学参与其中，有助于活动开展；有助于班级进一步发展；有助于使全院真正联系在一起，形成一个团结整体；也有助于体现全院学生风采。

Dear _,

Economics attempts to understand and address many of the world’s most

serious problems. I would like to enhance my knowledge of the economic and

social principles of global sustainable development, such as the divergence

between rich and poor countries and how this links with the theories of growth

so that I can help to alleviate the effects of these types of economic

problems.

I have enjoyed the macroeconomic side of the course and I am looking

forward to learning more about globalisation after reading The Undercover

Economist by Harford as he argues that the benefits of globalisation outweigh

the disadvantages, such as the “Race to the Bottom”. Furthermore, the article

Globalisation Shakes the World by Schifferes brought context to Harford’s views

by allowing me to understand the contrasting effects of globalisation on

Bangalore and Michigan. In general I enjoy keeping up with current economic

affairs and I am intrigued by the future effects of the recent migration of

refugees from Syria into Europe and I am keen to understand whether this will be

of benefit or burden to European economies.

I enjoy taking part in voluntary work such as my work experience in Uganda

in August 2014. The visit highlighted the countries many issues such as famine,

poor infrastructure and the vast inequality between developed countries and

developing countries. This led me to read The Bottom Billion by Collier which

enabled me to gain a better understanding of the positions of the countries at

the bottom of the global economic system by explaining the four economic traps.

This suggested that Uganda is a failing economy because it is landlocked by bad

neighbours, as well as recently being stuck in the conflict trap, from which it

has now escaped but is still at high risk of falling back into due to its low

income and slow growth. The Bottom Billion also analyses the effectiveness of

global aid. This had lead me to research about how Britain’s overseas budget is

spent and how the UN aims to deal with global poverty. I found the UN’s 17 new

goals regarding sustainable development and economic policy very ambitious

particularly ending poverty and hunger globally and providing quality education

for all by 2030.

In March 20_ I completed a Future Learn course about how genes influence

cancer development. I found this very beneficial as it built on my knowledge of

genetics and how this has been used to produce technological advances that may

eventually cure cancer. For this reason I am currently doing another online

course about wealth and income inequality with the Open University. As an

academic scholar I thrive on opportunities for independent research and work,

and these courses have allowed me to achieve these aims.

The subjects I have taken through to A Level have taught me valuable

skills; Mathematics has developed my problem solving and data analysis skills

and studying Biology and Chemistry has allowed me to think critically and

improve my investigative skills. I am taking part in the Biology Olympiad

competition which utilises knowledge gained from inside the A level course to

answer questions outside of the course curriculum.

I enjoy the challenge that leadership brings whether in the Community

Service unit visiting a local school or in my role as a School Prefect and House

captain which has meant I have learnt the importance of communication, teamwork

and commitment. Furthermore, I have chosen to become an academic mentor which

includes tutoring younger students. Whilst maintaining a strong academic record

I also participate in School hockey and netball teams and I have decided to take

part in the Young Enterprise scheme this year to improve my understanding of the

business world.

I have greatly enjoyed the challenges that I have encountered so far and I

look forward to focusing my learning on a subject that I find intellectually

我是艺术设计学院装饰01班学生---。我来自农村，对于当地当时的情况，亲朋好友都为我感到高兴能有机会上大学。怀着满腔的热情，我离开了我钟爱的故土来到他乡求学。带着家乡们的自豪与执着，我一直在努力的做着我应该做的事情——学习。可是在我求学的路上，父母省吃检用的钱把钱寄给我。他们希望我能过的好。父母只想让我好好学习，我只能用学习成绩来回报他们，每次向家里报告好成绩的时候，都可以感受到父母舒心的笑容，还有他们的嘱咐，让我再接再励!

早年就靠父母们远走他乡去打工挣钱为我找学费并且一直持续到现在。也许是父母们对与儿女的关爱，他们总是要我们不要太薄对自己，总是把最好东西留给我们，他们自己说“钱我们俩回努力去挣的，你尽管按你的需要去做你的事情吧!只要你将来能够有所作为。”每当我听到这句话，我都回感到镇镇心痛。一种欲摆无奈的心情。我只愿为他们减轻些。这二千元的助学金对我来说能解决家里的困难，我想给父母减轻一些负担。

大学阶段是我人生中一个极为重要的阶段。在这两年中，我在各个方面都获得了巨大的进步，综合素质得到了很大的提高。我也要特别感谢院里的大力培养以及老师在专业方面的深入指导和同学们在工作、生活中给我的支持和帮助。非常感谢国家给予我们大学生的帮助，资助优秀大学生完成学业。今天我得到了帮助，我会在以后的日子里更加严格要求自己，学好专业知识，争取早日服务社会，为国家奉献一份力量。

我将听从团委安排，积极配合各部长工作，提高办事效率，争取使宣传部的工作更上一个台阶。我拟从以下几个方面开展我的工作：

（一）增强宣传部内部的团队意识和凝聚力。不同与其他的部门，宣传部的工作更多的是与宣传板打交道，采访与发稿，真正需要大家聚在一起共同完成的任务并不多。因此也就造成了目前很多宣传部成员间彼此不是很熟悉，合作意识淡薄的现象。而且，团队意识的淡薄也造成了工作积极性的下降。我上任后，将加强各成员间的合作与交流。定期举行经验交流活动，交流采访经验，探讨写作技巧。定期评选优秀成员，调动大家的积极性。我想，如果能做到真正的有事可做，大家就不会觉得宣传部的工作单调和乏味了吧。

（二）采取适当强制措施，增加发稿量。发稿量的减少是目前宣传部面临的一个很严峻的问题。要解决这个问题，我认为除了继续调动大家的积极性外，还应采取一定的强制措施。

（四）培养新成员，使他们早日堪当大任。几个月后，又将有一批新鲜血液注入进来。作为一名学长，我将保持宣传部的优良传统，像我的学长对我们一样关心指导新成员。针对新成员不了解规程，不熟悉格式的问题，我会让老成员中的佼佼者定期为他们讲解，以老带新，手把手的教他们采访、拍照、写稿。使他们不断得到锻炼，并在锻炼中快速成长。

假如我能顺利担任院学生会宣传部部长，我将认真完成自己的各项本职工作，配合学生会搞好我院的宣传工作。我将进一步加强自身修养，努力提高和完善自身素质，全方位宣传学生会工作的开展情况，提高我院的知名度和美誉度，同时我会在其中锻炼自己的各种能力，包括组织能力，思维能力，办事能力，创造能力和交际能力。

Dear _,

Academically, I have always been a very determined and studious individual,

hence why I knew that a degree at University would be the definite next step. I

have a broad interest in many subject areas yet feel drawn towards a law or

business orientated degree. With regards to Business, the reasoning behind my

choice is the complex and intriguing nature of the subject. I particularly enjoy

the way business so appropriately blends in with everyday issues. Since taking

the subject at A-Level my interest has grown and matured and I am able to view

many businesses analytically and make suggestions regarding possible

improvements. Law is an area which has interested me from an early age. I enjoy

extensive reading and recognise that this is essential in studying law. I

consider myself to be well suited to a career in law as I pay much attention to

detail and take pleasure in undergoing work which raises social issues in

today's society and requires the skill to manipulate evidence and present

persuasive arguments. I also believe that the Psychology A-Level I have has

aided me in observing the actions of others and how their opinions and memories

are influenced by external factors. This area of work requires much confidence

which I believe I posses and can use to my advantage in order to gain

recognition in this competitive field of work.

My work experience is very broad due to a variety of positions I have held

in differentiating working environments. My experience working for Royal

Worchester & Spode in the Debenhams' department store has been the most

influential. The up-market company requires a confidant disposition from a Sales

Advisor such as myself and a proficient memory in order to ensure product

knowledge is to an optimum standard. I was also given the responsibility to

train a new employee which displays the high degree of trust my employers have

for me.

My educational experiences have been of great use to me from a position of

form captain in Secondary School to aiding the organisation of mass celebrations

in College. Responsibilities such as these have helped me to mature and take my

positions seriously so that I am respected by staff. My position of English

Prefect in Year 11 required a large portion of my time as I was in charge of

aiding the entire English department. My interest in the Italian language has

also led me to have an article I wrote regarding the exploitation of women on

Italian Television published in 'L'Italiano' newspaper, to which I was very

content to have my views expressed.

During Secondary School I also attended evening Italian classes where I was

presented with 'The Student of the Year Award' due to my excellent standard of

work. The class required me to organise my time efficiently so that other

schoolwork did not suffer as a result of my extra GCSE. As a result of these

classes and of my Italian parents I now speak the language fluently

Sport and leisure also interests me and during college I decided to use

this interest to do charity work for RNIB where I raised GBP250 and abseiled

120ft down Westminster University. I played Netball for the Harrow Netball Team

and competed in the OGI UK Games for the Harrow and Wembley team where I was

awarded several trophies and a gold and bronze medal for long jump and

javelin.
