My father

My father always stands in the center of my life, from past till now and possibly in the future.

My family was rather poor when I was in my childhood. We didn't have our own house and had to live in a shabby, small room rented from my father's factory. The room was so small that there was little space for people to walk. I didn't have my own bed and had to sleep with my parents. This is terrible both for my parents and me.

But father made this all different! Since the room was on the third floor, namely, the top floor in that old style building, the roof was quite high above the floor. So father got an idea. He bought two thick ropes and a flat wood that later was planed smooth, painted and drilled two holes on both ends.

Then he hung the ends of ropes up to the roof. During the daytime, these two ropes would be tied up so that people down could walk freely! When night came, father would loose the ropes and tied them to the two holes of that flat wood. The length of these ropes was just long enough for me to sit or sleep on the board without other's help.

So in this way my lovely, removable bed was born.

When winter came, this special bed obviously wouldn't be able to make me feel warm enough. But father always had his so lution! He built a garret using some flat wood and iron sticks right above the bed. With some used iron tubes, he made an iron ladder for us to climb up to the garret. Besides, he made a wood en desk for me to do my homework, and some simple furniture for my clothes, books and something else he had in fact made a small bedroom for me.

At first, my mother and I dared not climb for fear that it might collapse. But father climbed it everyday to prove its safety. The garret looked simple even shabby and the ladder seemed to decline soon. But later when I got used to it, I found it as solid as those made by professional carpenters.

I carried all my personal things onto that garret. My father and I pasted red papers on the wall and painted the ugly furniture red. So the garret became the first "room" that belonged to me.When I was about to move to my new house, I just didn't want to leave. That garret was created with my father's love and sweat and intelligence, beautified with my hand and filled with so many sweet memories of my family! Hi, everybody. This Sunday is Father’s Day, and so I wanted to take a moment to talk about the most important job many of us will ever have and that’s being a dad.

Today we’re blessed to live in a world where technology allows us to connect instantly with just about anyone on the planet. family is the most important. and we are called to recognize and honor how

critical every father is to that foundation. they are teachers and coaches. they

are mentors and role models. they are examples of succeand the men who

i know what it means to have an absent father, although my circumstances werent

as tough as they are for many young people today. even though my father left us

when i was two years old, and i only knew him from the letters he wrote and the

stories that my family told, i was luckier than most. i grew up in hawaii, and

had two wonderful grandparents from kansas who poured everything they had into

helping my mother raise my sister and me - who worked with her to teach us about

love and respect and the obligations we have to one another. i screwed up more

often than i shouldve, but i got plenty of second chances. and even though we

didnt have a lot

of money, scholarships gave me the opportunity to go to some of the best

schools in the country. a lot of kids dont get these chances today. there is no

margin for error in their lives. so my own story is different in that

still, i know the toll that being a single parent took on my mother - how

she struggled at times to the pay bills; to give us the things that other kids

had; to play all the roles that both parents are supposed to play. and i know

the toll it took on me. so i resolved many years ago that it was my obligation

to break the cycle - that if i could be anything in life, i would be a good

father to my girls; that if i could give them anything, i would give them that

rock - that foundation - on which to build their lives. and that would be the

greatest gift i could

the second thing we need to do as fathers is paalong the value of empathy

to our children. not sympathy, but empathy - the ability to stand in somebody

elses shoes; to look at the world through their eyes. sometimes its so easy to

get caught up in us, that we forget about our obligations to one another. theres

a culture in our society that says remembering these obligations is somehow soft

- that we cant show weakness, and so therefore we cant show

our kids that youre not strong by putting other people down - youre strong by

lifting them up. thats our responsibility as fathers.

and by the way - its a responsibility that also extends to washington.

because if fathers are doing their part; if theyre taking our responsibilities

seriously to be there for their

children, and set high expectations for them, and instill in them a sense

of excellence and empathy, then our government should meet them

People say that father’s love likes a mountain: heavy and silent. It’s

Before I was going to senior school, my father had never said a word to
