Dear _,
I am hoping to read for a communications, media and culture degree. I find
it remarkable, inspiring and a little bit frightening how the media exercise
control over our lives, whilst offering rich cultural rewards. I am fascinated
by the action and effects of human communications of all kinds and am keen to
extend the insight I have gained so far.
My interest in the subject began through my GCSE Media Studies and my
knowledge of the subject area has expanded at A-level where I am acquiring
analytical skills, helping me unpack and contextualise a wider variety of media
forms. My other A-levels are English Language, Sociology, Critical Thinking and
Philosophy &Ethics, and these are giving me a broad overview of life and
human communications and culture. An example of how these subjects support each
other would be studying the marxist concept of hegemony and applying it to
religion, media ownership, the high culture/low culture debate in sociology and
even the bourgeois emphasis on Standard English.
I've slowly been gaining practical experience alongside my academic
learning. Two years ago, I was lucky enough to get work experience with a
television crew on location as a runner. I learnt the value of working as a
member of the team in a stressful environment and I gained an understanding of
the processes of TV production. I have also been involved in several other media
projects, some as coursework and others undertaken independently.Coursework
projects have included a magazine for young male teenagers; designing a product
and advertising campaign; and producing, directing and presenting a documentary
for sixth formers and their parents on the EMA system. As extra-curricular
activities, I designed a poster and Internet campaign for one of the school
plays and in the absence of any existing school publication, I launched a
bimonthly newsletter, aimed at Angley's students. These projects have provided
great learning experiences, enabling me to develop print software skills in a
creative way.
Other school activities have included, the lead male role in 'South
Pacific' and significant roles in 'Oliver' and 'West Side Story' as well as
assisting the Performing Arts A-level group perform their comedy show. By
playing roles on stage, my confidence has increased and I have learnt to
appreciate and learn from the talents of others. I am also a school prefect,
which I find satisfying and a great privilege.
In my leisure time I enjoy making films - mostly parodies of various
genres. I then edit the films using a programme called Magix Movie Edit Pro. I
have also edited on Final Cut Express, which has made an interesting comparison.
My next project is to learn Final Cut Pro, and to develop a more effects-driven
style. I also like to read, for example, I was inspired by Naomi Klein's book No
Logo on the effects of globalization, the commoditisation of our culture and
public spaces and how powerful brands have become. I am currently reading Graeme
Burton's Media & Society to gain some additional perspective on my A2 media
and to prepare myself for my degree.
So far I have enjoyed myself in my studies and hopefully have developed
some of the skills and qualities for success in degree-level communications,
media and culture studies.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
I always believe that the opportunities only dawned on those with full
preparations. On Nov. 17 this year, I participated in the selective trial of the
registered accountants held by China Registered Accountant Association, in which
I ranked to the top in the examinations and will be sent to practise in the big
international accounting company in foreign country. It is a very competitive
trial with over 150 excellent students majoring in accounting as the
participators, including those in _ University and _ University. When my
friend asked me how I prepared for this contest and got such a good score, I
told them that the only thing I did was to keep a smooth heart and full
confidence towards the precipitate contest. Actually, for years, I have never
stopped making preparations by learning carefully and diligently for the coming
of the contest.
Two years ago when I first entered our university, I was selected into the
best class in our school for my outstanding score. This class consists of 150
excellent students out of 3000 freshmen that year with the best professors
(Including the president of the school, department dean and the doyen professors
on every subject) teaching us. Therefore, my view was largely broadened in the
nutritious studying atmosphere, where I was deeply influenced by their
researching experience and personal charms as well as learning abundant
professional knowledge and cultivating my unique ideas. Besides, many of my
learning habits and thinking styles came from the study there. Meanwhile
however, I also shouldered heavy pressure because we must be the best in such a
class under the attention of all the teachers and students in the school.
Therefore, I tried to do everything perfectly without missing any small problem.
At the end of last year, I happened to find the suggestion collection paper for
the “Asset Decrease Accounting Standard” on the website, which was quite
different from what I learnt in books. Cherishing the aroused interest, I spent
over one month in learning this standard carefully by reading large amount of
files and discussing with my teacher for the cognition of the developing
process, problems and influence to the registered companies of the Asset
Decrease Calculation. Finally, I published my article on the core magazine of
“Finance and Accounting”. Besides, I am a girl who liked challenges. On
completing my study in the three years, I accepted many challenges without any
hesitation. I could get much pleasure when racing with time because I believe
that the valuable use of every minute means the success. Therefore, I was very
excited to be able to enter the graduate school one year earlier than other
students in class taking advantage of my insistent efforts to learn twice as
much knowledge as them. Meanwhile, I am very proud that I got the first
scholarship in my sophomore year for my excellent score.
In spite of the limited spare time with 5-6 hours on my daily courses, I
actively found many opportunities to do the extracurricular work. For example, I
asked my teacher for assisting him with his subject and helping him to summarize
the files because I am always trying to form my own points by summarizing the
knowledge I learnt. I think that study is an active action, which required me to
find some opportunities to improve myself independently. Taking advantage of my
excellent behavior, I was finally admitted by the professors and participated in
the _ Social and Scientific Layout Project: “Research on the Accounting
Information Transmission Mechanism based on the Company Management” by Professor
_, in which I was mainly responsible for the Comparison of the Statistics
Information Transmission Mechanism among the main countries in the world as the
assistant of Professor x_ Through the collection and summarization of the
hundreds of files, I further improved reading ability from over ten pages of the
Chinese files per hour at the beginning to large amount of English files as well
as picking up some useful information per hour. Therefore, my abilities in the
information seeking and estimation were largely improved.
My campus life is rich and colorful. As the vice president of the
Students’Union, who was mainly responsible for the work of Science and
Technology Association, I must organize some meaningful extracurricular
activities for students with the other members of the Students’ Union like the
debates and speech contests etc. In this process, my leadership, organizing and
team managing abilities were largely improved. In addition, I was also involved
in the work of External Relations Department, which was very difficult and
complicated because this department is just similar to the Public Relation
Department in the company. It was established mainly to connect with the leaders
of the corporations for the fund to our campus activities. It was just the
particular work in this department that presented me with a strong communicating
ability. Generally, I think that my participation and organization of these
extracurricular activities has improved my comprehensive ability, which is very
helpful for my future study.
Yours sincerely,

2.本单位意见一栏须写上“同意出国申请”字样并有领导签定;
3.翻译邀请函(提供国外大学入学通知书原件及复印件B5);
4.两寸护照像(黑白彩色均可)4张,背后写明本人姓名;
5.本人身份证与户口本原件及本人身份证正反面的复印件B5,印在一张纸上;
6.大专(含大专)以上学历人员自费出国留学审核表;

I am a person keen on thinking and experiencing. My lively character and
vigorous energy have made me very active in extracurricular events in which I
have sought an all-round personal development. Sociology Studies will provide me
with the kind of constant real life thinking I have always craved, while helping
me to improve my analytical, practical & communication skills. Also my
concern and curiosity about society and its people inspired me to pursue this
subject for my higher education, as I believe Sociology Studies sums up a lot in
the changing nature of society.
My education has schooling my perception of society and people leading me
to be acutely aware of social events, inequality, identities, cultures and
religious fundamentalism, especially in a society such as the one I come from -
China. I was practicing in the Chinese Hope Project during summer holidays and
volunteered to investigate the issue of low educational attendance rate for
female students in rural China with my tutor from my high school and that was a
very good experience as it not only made me realise how traditional cultural
influence could remain unchanged in some of those rural areas in China and also
the way parents and children interacting. I always have wondered why for many
Chinese students just like me, hundreds of them fail to choose what they really
want to student and do as a career. Chinese parents are definitely having
strange influences on their kids' decision making in terms of education and
career or in the worst cases; the parents decided what their kids should do
solely. My mother believes that I should go for Finance studies, while I clearly
know that my interest has never been in the Mathematical formulas and numbers, I
always find the diversities of societies, people, beliefs, cultures and the way
people interacting together very fascinating. So, during this summer, my
thoughts kept returning on why I worked so unsuccessfully towards studying
finance and economics as my mother expected? And how can I truly become my own
master by progressing a BA that I really like to engage more research and enrich
myself with? How did all the cultural and beliefs affecting the way we acting
the roles in the community? In which way an individual could actually build up
and refine his/her identities?
In pursuing a Sociology degree, I seek answers to these questions. A
thorough examination of the Sociology behind human behaves could reveal the
beliefs, values and identities; it enables us to exam and understand ourselves
better. While knowledge of Sociology will certainly benefit the social services
providing, I also maintain a passion for Culture Studies for that same reason.
Cultural behaviour study appeals to me because it tells us why we act in a
certain way - under a cultural atmosphere. Also for being in the -- for 3 years,
the knowledge about the outside world has given me a unique and balanced
perspective to examine the reality of Chinese society too. In this historical
epoch in which China is becoming closely integrated into the international
community and playing an influence role in the world arena, I wish to gain
insights into our society in its socio-culture aspects and to study how Chinese
culture can respond to the globalization process.
By combining these thoughts into a good BA in Sociology degree programme, I
can pursue my professional goal of doing education and community service work
for the government and perhaps focusing in promote public welfare. My experience
in the past in social practices has not only equipped me with an intellectual
foundation for my future studies but has also supplied me with my career plans.
In my eyes, China's several thousand years of history has given rise to the
deep-entrenched rule by man instead of rule by law and nature. In dealing with
such issues like economic development, poverty elimination and the promotion of
law, the framing and application of government policies seem to play a greater
role. Therefore, it is obvious that to contribute to public welfare and to
national development, it is more realistic and useful to become a well-trained
and well-qualified public administrator. In this lies the motivation of my
application for an undergraduate programme in sociology at your esteemed
department.
WanSheng High School where I was studying is a key provincial high school
that attracts best students from every part of the province. In fierce academic
competitions, I have managed to remain top-ten in my high school academic
performance and was recommended by the school to Highbury College, Portsmouth to
study my foundation course. I passed the foundation course successfully in 20__
and was an outstanding student of my class. I believe that my previous social
practices activities and academic preparations have built a solid background for
me to further my intensive and fruitful research in your BA in Sociology
studies. After gaining knowledge of both Sociology and different cultures at the
highly regarded University of Leicester, I plan to work for social services to
use my knowledge of social human behaviour to aid members of the public.

Dear _,
This document is being submitted in support of my application for admission
into your program.
Born in June 19_, I grew up in Lanzhou, a city that boasts of a history of
thousands of years and a cultural heritage that is as colorful as it is old. Few
cities, either in China or beyond, can match it in the richness of architectural
styles. Stradding the upper Yellow River that sired the Chinese civilization,
Lanzhou prides itself in both her past glory laden in the ancient structures on
the north bank and her new found prosperity oozing out of the dazzling
high-rises in the south. Although, as a child, I was not always able to
articulate my admiration for such striking contrast, I constantly beheld the
city's landscape in awe. I began to understand, at that young age, that
architecture can be a powerful symbol of culture, a people and the spirit of an
era.
My first intellectual mentor, one of my parents' best friends, was an
artist seasoned in oil painting and photography. She often brought me with her
when she traveled, and it was on these trips that her creative mind worked in
full gear. I thus observed how human hands could work wonders by recreating the
beauty of natural scenery in the form of sketches, paintings and photos. What
was more important, I got to know that there are professions of creative work
that calls for imagination and craftsmanship.
Fervent with creative art and fascinated with architectural design, I
entered in 1992 into the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University,
China's top engineering school, on the strength of my outstanding performance in
the highly competitive National University Entrance Examinations.
At Tsinghua, I went through five years of vigorous training and thus
acquired exquisite skills in drawing and design. Since I understood from early
childhood that inspiration often comes from nature, I traveled far and wide
throughout China's vast territory, setting my foot even in outlying Tibet and
Xingjiang, both in the country's westernmost interior. These travels allowed me
to trace modern China's culture to its different sources, and the variety not
only deeply impressed me but also fired my imagination. In my graduation
project, Cashi Contemporary Art Museum in Xinjiang, I successfully blended a
natural environment into my artistic design by using a system of water
circulation to support and sustain the building. As the most significant
resource in an agricultural enclave surrounded by desert, water represents hope
for both the people and their land. With the water circulation system, the
building took on added vitality.
In mid-1997, I graduated with my B. S. and took a job as a designer with
the Beijing-based "company." My career as an architect thus took off.
Once I have settled into the real world of architectural design, I
developed my career path quickly, playing substantial roles in a stream of
projects. To date, my most significant responsibility has been to work as a main
designer in (a key state) project, in which I led a group of my colleagues in
meeting a daunting challenge. In addition to gaining a profound understanding of
the technical difficulties necessarily attendant to such large-scale projects, I
learned to work effectively within a team that also included my clients and
colleagues. The teamwork thus not only strengthened my professional competence
at conceptual and technical design but also honed my leadership skills that can
be put to good use in other situations. As a result, I now feel even more
confident of myself than I was before.
My experience in general, and the six years of frequent traveling in
particular, has left an indelible mark on my intellectual development. As I can
now readily appreciate a society's cultural, historical and socio-political
impact on its architectural styles, I now try to reflect my own cultural and
social background in my own designs. These days, I view architecture not just as
a career but, more importantly, as an expression of my professional progress,
and I fell that it is an view more compatible with Western rather than Chinese
pedagogy. In any case, I have already been through China's best school for
architectural studies, and I am convince that the further development of my
professional qualifications requires more advanced training in a school like
yours. I believe that advanced studies under your seasoned guidance will endow
me with a broader vision and more profound insights, with which I can make still
more contribution to my motherland China.
Yours sincerely,
bzuowen
Dear _,
On November 9, 20_, I took my GRE Subject (BIOLOGY) test. Although I it is
beyond me to report the exact number of the participants in this specific test
the world over, the score I achieved indicated to me that I was above 98%, and
according to the analysis by my classmates, this might be the highest score that
Chinese students have ever achieved. While I was aware that the importance of
any test score as an indicator of one’s scholastic aptitudes should never be
over-exaggerated, the result still gave me a tremendous sense of self-pride and
self-achievement. I believe that I achieved such a high score not through mere
coincidence. Instead, it is the result of my long-time love for and dedicated
efforts at biology. With an implicit faith in my knowledge of biology and in my
potential to continue to excel others, I here solemnly file this document in an
attempt to apply for admission into your esteemed university for a Master’s
program in pharmacology.
I am confident in my qualifications as a competitive applicant for your
highly respected program, partially because of my unusual interest in
pharmacology. As a bridge across medical science and pharmacy, pharmacology
plays a vital role in the research on the ways to resist diseases. The
exploration and the subsequent elaboration on the mechanism of therapeutic
functioning of drugs is a necessary step in the development and application of
drugs to overcome diseases. Faced with this academic discipline that is
inextricably connected with human life and human welfare, I have always been
fascinated by this subject, bent on making my own contributions to the
improvement of the quality of human life. Every time I learn about new theories,
approaches and developments in biology and pharmacology, I cannot help feeling
excited. Each setback I encounter or each success I achieve in my experiments
would motivate me to persist and continue. It is this fascination with biology
and pharmacology that stands behind my dedicated studies and research in those
subjects.
The 4-year comprehensive and systematic study and training in the specialty
of pharmacy guaranteed my successful completion of my undergraduate program at
the College of Medicine of _ University, the best medical institute in China.
In an academic environmental famous for its rigorousness, I established a solid
foundation in such diverse fields as biology, chemistry, biochemistry,
pharmacology, pathology, physiology, and cell biology. As I approached my
studies primarily from a problem-oriented manner, devoting much more energy to
labwork than to coursework in order to satisfy my curiosity for solving
practical problems, my overall GPA is somehow affected, slightly lower than what
I would have desired. In my case, GPA, which is purely based on exam scores,
does not account much. In retrospect, I have been more concerned with developing
my hands-on abilities and on developing an extensive knowledge rather than on
intensive test-oriented knowledge. Nevertheless, compared with other students, I
am sure that I excel them in terms of experimental skills and the ken of
knowledge and, for an undergraduate, a good foundation supported by
comprehensive specialized knowledge and strong hands-on abilities are most
important for more intensive studies in the future.
I have every reason to believe that my excellent experimental skills and
research experience will qualify me to be a helpful research assistant to my
future supervisor and to make important research achievements. Even when I was a
freshman, I started to work as a research assistant in the laboratory. Over the
past four years, I have commanded most of the basic skills necessary for
undertaking lab research, such as operations on animals, cell culture,
electrophoresis experiments, etc. By far, my most important research experience
came from undertaking my graduation project, which exemplified an overall test
of experimental techniques. I chose to focus on the Effect of Ye3 on the Cell
Apoptosis. The reason for choosing this subject of research is that the study of
cell apoptosis has a crucial importance in the treatment of cancer and in
maintaining the immunity of those suffering from AIDS. On the premise that rare
earth ions are considered capable of entering cells, I decided that my project
would concentrate on rare earth ions and their effects on cell nucleus. With
extensive experiments, I discovered that, under different circumstances, rare
earth ions would produce totally different behavior toward cell apoptosis. When
the concentration of rare earth ions is below a certain ultimate limit, the
function of the ions changes from that of facilitating cell apoptosis to that of
suppressing cell apoptosis. As an initial and tentative study, my research has
won very positive comments from my advisor. In undertaking a large quantity of
experiments, I not only applied basic operation skills with much dexterity but
also acquired many new techniques such as making post-coloring observation of
the morphology of cell nucleus through the confocal fluorescence microscope, and
performing qualitative testing of cell apoptosis with the help of flow cytometry
method (FCM).
Having completed my undergraduate education and acquired necessary
qualifications, I would like to pursue a more advanced degree program at The
Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine at The
University of _. The department, founded in the 1950’s, has been greatly
strengthened by the joining of dozens of renowned scholars and specialists over
each of the past decade. Its mission, “to educate, create and sustain knowledge
concerning the actions and mechanisms of drugs in biology and medicine,"
reflects the Department’s consistent dedication to academic excellence. Your
Department fosters research collaborations within the Department as well as with
other _ Faculties & Departments, national and international universities
and related industries, and is committed to the development of new research
areas. I am especially interested in Clinical Pharmacology Research Organization
(CPRO) under the leadership of Dr. _.
Your research-oriented program adheres to an “apprenticeship” model of
graduate training in which in which graduate students work in close
collaboration with a particular Faculty member, their supervisor. Since the
matching of research and professional interests between the student and a
Faculty member within the Department is paramount, I would like to identify Dr.
_ and Dr. X_as either instructor or supervisor with whom I would like to work
with. Dr. X_may enlighten me on central nervous system physiology and
pharmacology while Dr. X_may instruct me concerning the mechanisms of action
and resistance and intracellular pharmacokinetics of antiviral agents. My
initial study of their papers and research reveals that their fields of research
perfectly parallel my study and research interests. I expect that my Master’s
program can ultimately lead to a Ph. D. program.
This Personal Statement is presented by a highly self-motivated Chinese
young man who cherishes high academic ambitions, possesses outstanding biology
knowledge, and is determined to work harder to make even more proud
achievements. For this reason, I hope that my application can be given most
serious consideration.
Yours sincerely,

在中国的重点大学已学习一学期以上者,可直接入德国大学就读专业;
在中国的普通大学已学习一学期以上者,可进入德国大学预科学习;
在中国的普通大学已学习三学期以上者,可直接进入德国大学就读专业;

Dear _,
Whilst there is depth enough in examining the aesthetic beauty of well
constructed prose for it to warrant study in itself, it is not primarily for
this reason that I wish to read English literature. To be 'a fly on the wall in
a far wider array of times and places', as A. C. Grayling puts it, 'is the gift
that comes from thoughtful reading of even the most averagely good novels.' An
integral part therefore of a novel's value to us is, in my opinion, its ability
to transport us to a time or situation alien to our own. In this way our
knowledge and potential to learn can be immeasurably expanded by the possibility
of vicarious experience. Be it through the satire of Chaucer, the emotional
articulacy of Shakespeare or the bleak frankness of Orwell, good literature can,
and should, enlighten us to some degree about life, furthering our understanding
of our fellow human beings.
Shakespeare and Chaucer are, among others, writers I have had the good
fortune to study at A-level. Through the plays 'Hamlet' and 'Antony and
Cleopatra' and the Tales of the Franklin and Merchant, tragedy and the ideal of
courtly romance, are key themes I have explored. I have, however, delighted in
alternative interpretations, particularly of the Canterbury tales, making me
especially excited about studying the critical theory component of an English
degree. I am aware that the restrictions of the A-level syllabus have perhaps
resulted in a narrow, monocultural examination of rich texts and I thus relish
the chance that university will bring to broaden my literary horizons.
My complementary 'A' levels, History and Philosophy, highlight further the
ubiquity of literature, penetrating almost every other field of study. Just as
the plays of Arthur Miller can further our understanding of America's post war
'Red Scare,' so can Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment lead us to question the
moral values of utilitarianism and our innermost conception of our own identity.
Indeed the expression of philosophical concepts within English literature is a
topic I would love to explore further at some point during my university
study.
I have welcomed the opportunity of sharing this enthusiasm with others
during the final year in Sixth Form by helping struggling 12 and 13 year olds at
a local comprehensive improve their reading skills. The experience has been
particularly rewarding for me, and evocative of my own battle with dyslexia as a
younger child. Outside of academia, I enjoy sports, having represented my
College 1st XV Rugby team and Hockey 2nd XI. In further pursuit of
self-development, I recently undertook a month long 'World Challenge' expedition
to Outer Mongolia. The trip, which involved renovating classrooms of a remote
primary school, gave me an insight into foreign culture as well as a fresh
appreciation of beauty in the natural world. In an effort to complete the
'campfire scene,' I managed to take my acoustic guitar and accompany our
singing; I continue to enjoy composing my own songs, inspired by the poetic
lyrics of artists such as Bob Dylan.
I feel it is important to emphasise then that my interest in literature is
not exclusively limited to its role in providing a window into the unfamiliar.
Indeed the intrinsic value and resonating power to convey emotion which lies
with 'the best words in their best order' is a fascinating and life-enriching
topic of study in its own right. As Aldous Huxley's wonderful, autodidactic
savage realises in A Brave New World, the limits of ones language truly are the
limits of ones world. In the light of this, I happily anticipate spending the
next few years of my life immersed in as many aspects of literature as possible,
and subsequently, furthering the expansion my own 'world' through interaction
with similarly passionate and like-minded people.
Yours sincerely,
bzuowen

Dear _,
In order to help me to gain an insight into the world of dentistry, I spent
three weeks observing a dentist in a general practice where I shadowed numerous
procedures varying from routine check-ups, polishing, filings, and root canal
treatment. Whilst shadowing I was lucky enough to assist the dentist by
performing small tasks such as preparing alginate. I also engaged in a
discussion with the dentist on what procedure is most appropriate for a patient
with few remaining upper teeth. After a few suggestions the dentist came to the
treatment plan involving construction of an upper metal partial denture to
achieve optimal aesthetic and occlusal function at a financial level the patient
could afford. This experience allowed me to gain a good impression of the day to
day problems dentists must tackle. My responsibilities included booking
appointments for patients, which gave me the opportunity to communicate with and
question patients about what they look for in a dentist. One aspect I really
enjoyed was looking at radiographs and listening to the dentist as he explained
what we are looking for and what the x-rays showed. I was astonished at how much
information can be discovered from these panoramic x-rays. In order to explore
other fields of dentistry I am also awaiting placement into an oral &
maxillofacial department in Charing Cross Hospital, where I will be observing
major jaw reconstruction.
My interest in Dentistry is backed up by my A-level subjects. I enjoy
studying Chemistry specifically about optical isomers and their importance in
medicines. Chemistry also sets the foundation needed to build on the human
body’s biochemical reactions that I will be learning in dental school. Biology
facilitates an understanding of the intricate details relating to human anatomy
in particular with the nervous system. Economics teaches me the business aspect
to running a dental surgery. Along with my A-levels, I will be resitting
AS-level modular exams to strengthen the academic side to my application: my
drive and commitment to becoming a dentist will aid me in achieving high
grades.
In my spare time I enjoy taking part in different sport activities. I am
particularly interested in tennis, which I play on a regular basis at Ealing
lawn tennis club, where I also volunteer to coach young children. I am also a
keen body builder which requires patience, determination and dedication. My
hobbies include producing stencil art using cardboard and exacto knives. This is
very relaxing, and also provides a base from which to build the manual dexterity
required to be a successful dentist.
As a child, I had to travel and live in many different countries. Not only
did this give me a good all-round knowledge of languages and customs but also
helped me develop vital social skills; I learnt to get along with many different
people with different cultures and behaviours. I believe I can capitalise on
these skills to help me communicate closely with my patients and understand what
they require from me.
Dentistry, without a doubt, is the profession for me. I believe I have the
qualities that are essential to making a good dentist along with the academic
motivation in order to replace my curiosity for dentistry with knowledge that
will help me provide quality oral care.
Yours sincerely,
bzuowen
Dear _,
I am applying to The City University of New York as a Visiting Graduate
Student for one term of study in the fall of 2009, non-degree. I completed my BA
in English and Danish from _ _ _ in Denmark in June, 2008 and for the time being
I am studying for my master's degree.
My love for language determined my field of study. Originally, I wanted to
study French, but a half year stay in England completely changed my mind.
In the summer of 2004 I applied at the National Center for Young People
with Epilepsy (NCYPE) in Surrey, England as a student support worker. I worked
in a residential house taking care of eight boys with severe disabilities, and I
loved being able to manage this responsibility and being challenged every
day.
Life in England was not entirely different to my life in Denmark, but more
so than I thought. And what I loved the most was learning the language properly.
To feel how my vocabulary was extended every day and to explore new dialects of
English I did not know existed.
During my education at the English department of _ _ _ I have found an
interest in the American side to the English language. Earlier in my studies I
took a course with the subject of Autobiography about writers in exile in
America, such as Jack Kerouac and Andrei Codrescu. This semester I took a course
in American Studies which provided a historical perspective to the American
literary history and this course opened the door to American literature for me.
I was deeply moved by the incredible Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
and T. S. Elliot's The Waste Land inspired me to explore an unknown world of
poetry. In my Bachelor Project I wrote about the US Governor Mike Huckabee and
his use of rhetorics in the US Primary Elections of 2007, where I explored the
depths and intentions of his use of language.
Besides studying I am a volunteer translator for a trans-European political
organisation, Neweuropeans, founded by Franck Biancheri, who is also the man
behind the student network Erasmus, and my work consists of helping them
translate their English website into Danish. I am very fond of linguistics, and
I have a special interest in the subject of Communicative Translation. I enjoy
working with a text and making the native English intention become clear in my
own language, and since every single word has its own ambiguous connotation, to
me it is as fun as a good Sunday crossword puzzle to find the right word that
suites the context.
My university has a tradition of incorporating group work into every area
of student studies and each semester students form groups of 3-8 students and
write a project on the basis of a lecture or a subject that is rooted in the
students' field of study.
The experience of working in groups has taught me the skill of working in
close connection with my fellow students; to be flexible and to take
responsibility for not only my own work, but also the work of my group members.
I find that my role in this constellation has often been to take the initiative
to get started and get things done on time and to keep the breadth of view. As a
person I am very sociable and therefore I have found that working in groups is
the perfect way to combine my independent studying with exciting group
discussions and a common interest in our specific course of study.
In the whole I feel that my bachelor degree has given me a solid
understanding of the theoretical part of the English language area. Equally, my
studies have included practical work, so I'm prepared for future work in my
field of study. In that respect, I have structured my education so that I also
attain a teacher competence in Danish and English along with my Master's
degree.
But my studies at have been hard at times. In the end of 2002 I was
diagnosed with Crohn's disease (inflammatory bowel disease). Today I am happy to
say that I am much better and my illness is under control. Though it was a tough
time, it taught me that I have the strength to pull through in a crisis. And
most importantly, I have proven to myself that I am a fighter.
My motivation for wanting to study in America is that I through my studies
have gotten an exciting insight into American literature and culture and I am
fascinated with American history, which encompasses a proud tradition of
liberty.
I feel that I can contribute to The City University of New York with an
ambitious and hardworking spirit, and believe the adventure of studying abroad
and experiencing my field of study up close will provide me with a purposeful,
different and international angle to my English studies and will be rewarding in
regards to my further studies and work in Denmark.
Yours sincerely,
bzuowen

Dear _,
I am applying for acceptance into your graduate program for a Doctor’s
degree in statistics. I plan to begin my studies in the fall of 1998. Nature is
full of mysteries, one of which seems to be its apparent readiness to conform
with mathematical principles. Such mysteries have fascinated me since my
childhood, prompting me to avidly read scientific writings by Hua Lougeng,
China’s most celebrated mathematician in the modern era, even while I was still
in primary school. Unable to fully understand Hua’s books as I must have been, I
learned that mathematics was itself wrapped with mysteries.
My intense interest, coupled with my hard work, in mathematics paid off.
During my third year in senior middle school, I took part in the National
Mathematics Contest for students in secondary education, and succeeded in
winning the tenth spot in a lineup of some two hundred thousand selected
participants. It was at that time that I made up my mind to pursue a career in
mathematics. In 1985, I entered into the East China Normal University to major
in mathematics. The mandatory courses ware concentrated mainly in two areas:
statistics and application technologies. There were also many elective courses.
In addition to courses of statistics and mathematics, I spent a lot of time and
energy learning such practical skills as computer programming and the
application of some new software systems in statistics. After graduation in
1990, I taught statistics for four years at another university until I decided
that I had to satisfy my curiosity further and learn more. In 1994, I joined a
graduate program at the Beijing Polytechnic University, where I concentrated my
studies in the area of artificial intelligence.
Never a bookworm, I presided over a sampling survey of the middle schools
in Shanghai, and published my findings in the ECNU journal. The topic for my
graduation paper, the problem of slow server, was actually culled from an
article published in pursuing more advanced studies in a technologically more
advanced country such as the United States. These journals provided me the
necessary quality and amount of reference materials t keep me informed of the
cutting edge of the field. The new method that I used in my research and my
smooth answers at my defense of the paper could all trace their origin back to
the journals that I had read. On the basis of my strong defense, the supervising
committee decided unanimously t grant me an unequivocal A for my graduation
paper. During the period of my graduate studies, I learned more about the
realization technology (not sure what you are trying to say) by using computer
programming. In image processing, I used the multianalysis and category theory
in statistics, and I helped to institute a recognition system for major
fingerprint characteristics. I have been working as a lecturer at the Beijing
Polytechnic University since I obtained my Master’s degree. Besides teaching, I
have been conducting market analysis as part of several research teams.
I have basically two main reasons to wish for further studies abroad.
First, the rapid development of the statistical science fascinates me, and I
would like to stand firmly on the cutting edge of the field by having myself
grounded in more advanced theories. Second, the market research that I am now
involved in is pushing me to master newer and better methodologies, I believe
that graduate studies with your department is one of the best ways for me to
attain both purposes.
I am convinced that the academic foundation I have laid in both theoretical
frameworks and practical skills will help me make a competent student in my
proposed studies. I am looking forward to the day when I shall return to China
with a Doctor’s degree to make more contribution to the development of the
science of statistics in this country.
Yours sincerely,

The most important element of my classroom, my office, or my home is a
personal relationship. I have figured this out on examination of my activities
in high school (youth group regional president), college (telephone crisis
counselor, resident advisor), or profession (teacher). As a teacher I made a
point of getting to know every student in my classes personally. It quickly
became my experience that students were more willing to learn, work, and excel
when they were appreciated as individuals and when they knew that the adult in
the classroom genuinely liked them.
After a few years' experience teaching seniors, I accepted a teaching job at
the middle school with the freshman class that had just learned they would not
physically be moving to the high school. How would I motivate and get to know
these kids? Everything that I had ever heard about or remembered about 9th grade
made me want to turn and run. But what convinced me to take this job was
technology. In my interview I learned that instead of the library, I was to use
the Internet (the what?). I was told that I would receive a laptop computer
(aren't those the things that people with "real" jobs used?) and that the kids
could teach me anything I needed to know.
Computers became my thing. Immediately I began to learn how to surf the
Internet from 8th and 9th graders (Sanj and Judy said I was teachers' pet). My
kids opened up and set aside their raging adolescence to use technology to help
me and help each other. As the year with the freshmen continued, I was
overjoyed. First, my kids and I had the best rapport in years (gosh Miss Glazer,
are all of your PowerPoint slides gonna look the same?). Second, my creativity
in teaching increased as new doors were opened to me and in turn to my students
(conspiracy takes on a whole new meaning when the Internet is your primary
source). Third, I was learning new and exciting things. I had finally found a
combination of skills that affected my students in such a positive way that I
knew I had to share my findings.
I have since taken my computer knowledge, instructional design ideas, plus my
emphasis on personal relationships and applied it to teachers and students in my
district and other districts in the North Texas area.
Through the Learning, Design, and Technology program at Stanford University I
hope to continue on the route that started for me at the middle school. I know
that I will learn new things and have an opportunity to apply them to
educational settings. I also know that I will be able to establish relationships
with colleagues, professors, and other students. Although a master's degree is
the short term goal, I believe that my long term goal remains the same as when I
began using technology in my classroom three years ago: to see students better
educated through a curriculum infused with technology by teachers who do not
lose sight of the personal relationships that benefit all kids.
This long-term goal may be achieved by working in a single school, a school
district, or an educational center. It may be reached by teaching new teachers
on the university level, by instructing at-risk students in a county
after-school program, or by designing a terrific new classroom model and
implementing it through a regional education lab with a grant from the U.S.
Department of Education.
Whatever the job, my aim remains the same and as it did years ago with my
freshmen, I feel certain that I will use any situation to fulfill my goal to
benefit students (can you say optimistic, or is it opportunistic?)
