Student Visa (500)

Dear _,

The spectre of global terrorism is prevalent. Fundamental civil liberties

are under threat, not only by those who seek to destroy our society, but also by

those who have been charged with the task of safeguarding it. We are possibly

entering a period of momentous constitutional change and legislative upheaval.

Therefore, it seems to me that the 21st century looks set to be both an exciting

and crucial time in which to embark upon legal study.

My desire to study Law stems from a growing fascination with World events,

as well as with the minutiae of our day-to-day existence. As Helena Kennedy QC

states 'The Law is the bedrock of a nation; it tells us who we are, what we

value, who has power, and who hasn't. Almost nothing has more impact on our

lives,' ('Just Law', 20_): this, I believe, defines the importance of Law. I am

stimulated by present-day ethical considerations which may impact upon the legal

framework of this country: Everyday Law (Aviva Golden, 2000), for example,

stipulates that marital union may take place only between two, consenting adults

of the opposite sex; yet, when marriage harbours civil as well as religious

implications, is it right to discriminate? How is it possible for one to

reliably arbitrate the point at which abortion should be deemed illegal? Both

are among issues which I find to be perplexing and fascinating in equal measure.

I am interested also in the fundamental components of legal practise; the

exposition of complex drafts (such as marriage or business contracts), being

something which I feel would be facilitated by a firm and comprehensive grasp of

the English language. I would say, in addition, that I am a confident and

articulate public speaker - exemplified by my participation in the 2004 House

debating team - and one who regularly takes pleasure in assuming the role of

'Devil's Advocate' for the purpose of arguing controversial points of view,

irrespective of personal bias.

My work experience with the Crown Prosecution Service in Gloucester really

fired and reinforced my enthusiasm for a career in Law. I had the opportunity to

shadow administrators, solicitors and office clerks, observing critical

procedures at every level: from case-work and preparation, all the way through

to the excitement of litigation in the Crown Courts. This enabled me to lay to

rest any sensationalised preconceptions (such as those arising from TV

dramatisations) in favour of a more rounded insight into the legal field; backed

up, of course, with Brian Heap's 'The Way In', and Philip Kenny's 'Studying Law'

- both of which have provided valuable insights. It has also invested me with

some notion of what to expect from the very wide range of career opportunities

currently available within the legal domain.

With respect to my extra-curricular life, I work as a sales assistant for

Maltby Books in Cheltenham. I am also the recent recipient of a Millennium

Volunteers Award of Excellence for having contributed 200 hours to my local

community - to whit, the Pate's School Library, and Cheltenham Children's

Theatre Association. As regards the latter, I am currently director, secretary

and Committee member of three years' standing, in addition to having acted lead

roles in several Summer productions. I also played the part of Richard Greatham

in a recent Pate's 6th form production of No?l Coward's 'Hay Fever'. All these

activities have demanded a significant degree of sustained commitment, integrity

and competence; in addition, they have afforded me the opportunity to develop

administrative skills, computer literacy, and the ability to communicate ideas

to people under a variety of circumstances. I would say that I have acquired

valuable skills and experience as a result of these ventures; qualities which I

hope would contribute significantly to a promising career studying Law at

university.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

As early as a senior middle school student, I held in great adoration of

Chengning Yang and Tsung-dao Lee, two most prominent Chinese-born physicists to

have won Nobel Prizes. Thenceforward, I have cherished the constant aspiration

of becoming a renowned physicist myself the way these two Nobel laureates did.

Even one decade later, I can still recall the first experiment I did in the

physics course. When a transmitter in one corner of the lab was connected with

electricity, a little bulb connected to a reception antenna in another corner

lit up. Though by no means dazzling in itself, this light with its stunning

magic ushered me as if into a wonderland, a world replete with intriguing

mysteries that only belong to the realm of physics. I believed that I belonged

to this special world. That marked the turning point in my life and with it I

commenced my quests for answers capable of unraveling those mysteries.

With an unusually solid foundation in physics laid during senior middle

school (I received straight A’s in virtually every physics exam), I entered the

Physics Department of Dalian Marine University. By the time I graduated in four

years, which could only be described as transitory, I found that I had become

emotionally attached to this discipline. Realizing that undergraduate studies

had only exposed me to the relatively fundamental knowledge of this subject, I

embarked on a Master’s program, through very competitive entrance examinations,

in fiber-optical communication at the College of Telecommunication Engineering,

the University of Beijing Posts and Telecommunications (UBPT).

The moment I came into contact with this brand-new field represented by

telecommunications(China tends to lag behind western countries in scientific and

technological develop in any given field by many years or even decades), I was

filled with excitement over the wonderful prospect that this industry could

enjoy. I yearned to be satiated with new concepts, new knowledge, and new

expertise and I devoted myself to my program with indefatigable efforts. To my

regret, after completing our share of research responsibilities in the 863

Project under the direction of my supervisor, we had no further opportunities to

participate in any meaningful projects. I had no alternative but to duplicate

the Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror and its Applications in OTDM System which had

already been completed by scientists abroad and to verify their research

findings by means of computer simulations. It was precisely those backward

research conditions and the lack of challenging projects that prompted me to

generate the idea of seeking further studies abroad. I believed that the status

quo would impose serious restrictions on the development of my intellectual

capacities and on the exploitation of my academic potential.

But for two years before I could bring my overseas studies into a reality,

I worked at the leading enterprise in the country’s telecommunications

industry—China Telecom Beijing Branch Company. As broadband networks engineer

and as technical support engineer, I was responsible for the design and

operation of four major projects—Construction of Broadband Integrate Services

Experimental Network, Experiment and Construction of Broadband DSL Network in

Beijing, Test of Timing Clock of Beijing SDH Networks and Equipment Selection

for Beijing CDMA Wireless Network. My distinguished work performance resulted in

my being sent to Marconi Company’s American headquarters to receive professional

trainings in ATM technology. Nevertheless, I still felt that in a company

environment work was routinized and technology lacked innovativeness, falling

far short of my passions and ambitions. The work was meaningful only to the

extent of serving as a means of livelihood. Refusing to be mired in a mediocre

condition, I decided that the time had come for me to pursue research work that

I had always loved.

Relying on my solid foundation in physics, my well-trained experimental

skills and hands-on abilities that I developed over the heretofore studies and

work, I succeeded in entering the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). In the

superior laboratory conditions, for the first time in my life I had a proud

feeling of being involved in real scientific research. When I see how my

inspirations turn into reality in the laboratory, once again for the first time

in my life I feel that I am creating a kind of wealth far more precious and

valuable than money –knowledge. I realized that I had made an absolutely correct

decision to come to the United States. At the Center of Nanostructure Materials

and Quantum Device Fabrication and Electro Optical Research Center, I have done

two years coursework and one year and half lab research. They have significantly

enhanced my ability to solve research problems independently. Since last year, I

have conducted extensive experiments in the field of nanotechnology and

Semiconductor and optoelectronic elements. Although the approaches and solutions

I generate during those experiments frequently differ from those of my

supervisor’s in many important aspects, I have merited positive comments from

him. I am fully confident that by the end of this year my research efforts would

come into full fruition.

Nevertheless, I still feel discontented. In retrospect, I developed a

commitment to scientific research very early and have persevered under the

spirit of this commitment. After my arrival in the United States, I realized

that there is tremendous research potential in me to be tapped. All I need to do

is to find an appropriate academic environment. Even UTA disappoints me in that

I have been kept waiting for nearly four year before I could embark on a major

research project that promises important research findings. I have come to the

conclusion that whether in China or in the United States it is simply a waste of

time passively waiting for research projects. Consequently, the best course of

action for me to take is to pursue seek a Ph.D. program at one of the top

American universities.

The University of …… comes on top of my priorities because it is a top

ranking university in the United States itself and in the entire world. In the

field of Electrical Engineering, in particular, it enjoys an unparalleled

position. It offers many research-intense programs and the research environment

is impeccable. I am deeply aware that for a person who seeks excellence and who

wishes to achieve some innovative research results in Electrical Engineering, it

is imperative that he or she plunge into an environment which is as challenging

and competitive as it is stimulating, promising the realization of one’s

ambitions. If admitted, I plan to take advantage of the research resources to

their fullest extent and within 4 to 5 years achieve major breakthroughs in

research based on what I have so far accomplished. I expect that this may lay a

solid foundation for me to undertake lifelong research at some reputed research

institutes of American universities or world-class companies like Intel and

IBM.

The conventional technology based in communication, control, date

processing, signal processing, medical instrumentation and in mainstream

computers is in a transition from electronics to optoelectronics and optically

enabled technologies. Future generations of integrated circuits, the foundation

of current high technology infrastructure, are expected to incorporate

significant optical functionality. I hope that my prospective studies at your

prestigious universities can solidify my knowledge and bring into full play my

latent intellectual capacities. I have experienced too many disappointments and

frustrations and what I look for is some truly creative and innovative research

work that can lead to important breakthroughs, which can permit me to join the

rank of elitist scientists exemplified by Prof. Cheng ning Yang and Prof.

Tsung-dao Lee whom I idolize.

Yours sincerely,

那么在PVA(签证预评估)阶段一定会顺利。

签证官会根据学生的学历背景、学习能力、经济背景和学习计划来判断赴澳目的是否明确;申请人的学习能力强、学习计划合理、工作时间比较短(学习断档时间短),在国内的生活水准中等偏上,而且欲就读的课程能提升其在国内的工作是非常有机会通过签证的;

Dear _,

A responsible, hard working and good-humoured person deeply committed to a

career in the legal profession. Particular areas of interest within the law

degree include Business Law and International Law as they incorporate my love

for economics and foreign culture respectively. Having studied mainly arts

subjects during the sixth form, I look forward to branching out into more

diverse fields, particularly medical law, as it allows the opportunity for

in-depth ethical discussion, something I have found especially interesting

during my time as a member of the school debating society.

I have recently immersed myself in the likes of “Learning The Law” by

Williams, “The Law Machine” by Berlins and Dyer, “Eve was Framed” by Kennedy and

John Grisham’s legal thrillers. These have given me a better understanding of

the workings of both the UK and US legal systems and have raised important legal

issues, the ethics surrounding the death penalty being one particular area of

interest. This interest spurred me on to look at the case of Aileen Wuornos, who

was executed despite questionable mental health.

I have spent time in the public galleries of both the local County Court

and High Court. I particularly enjoyed the courtroom banter that occurs between

lawyers and judges and, upon witnessing a sentencing, was immediately struck by

the judge’s power to dramatically change the course of somebody’s life in an

instant. In December I am due to shadow a district judge for a week, giving

valuable insight into the ins and outs of the career.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My four-year research experience since the completion of my undergraduate

program in _ has helped me to develop from a Bachelor in Engineering to a Master

in Science. My research activities cover a wide range of fields including

analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, organic catalysis, environmental

science, instrumental analysis, nano-analytical chemistry, and biological

analytical chemistry. I am proud to say that I have accomplished achievements in

almost every of those fields. Based on my research findings, I have published a

dozen research papers. In particular, I have received patents from the Patent

Office of China for two major research results "The Preparation Method of a

Solid Acid Catalyst with High Selectivity and Activity for Esterification" and

"A New Reaction Technology and the Equipment for Gas Phase Esterification". Both

of them have significant value in industrial application.

Nevertheless, I am acutely aware that, in the research fields I am

interested in, there are still so many difficult subjects and challenges

awaiting for solution. In physical chemistry, China is relatively backward in

the fields of catalyst development, catalyst inactivation, reaction dynamics,

reaction mechanism, geochemical reaction mechanism, environmental-chemical

reaction mechanism. In analytical chemistry, China lags relatively behind its

Western counterparts in areas such as instrumental analysis and theoretical

analytical chemistry. Basically, China relies on import for large-scale

analytical instruments. By contrast, the United States has many world-leading

academic specialists and encourages interdisciplinary programs. It will accord

me a stimulating and liberal academic environment, apart from the sophisticated

research facilities. Rice University is my top priority in applying for a Ph.D.

program and I choose to specialize in physical chemistry or in analytical

chemistry.

At Rice University, I plan to learn broader-based foundational theories in

my chosen fields. With my solid interdisciplinary knowledge and my ability for

the quick assimilation of new knowledge, I intend to secure for myself a RA

status to directly start my laboratory research under the guidance of my future

advisor. I can also work as TA so that I can study while teaching and conducting

my internship. I can apply, test and consolidate the theoretical knowledge that

I acquire in the process of internship and degree program. Finally, through

theoretical study and scientific research, I would endeavor to produce a

well-written dissertation in which I hope to achieve some breakthroughs on both

the theoretical and the research level.

After obtaining my Ph.D. degree, I intend to enter one of the top research

institutes to delve deeper into some challenging subjects and to achieve some

research fruits. After accumulating certain research experience at an actual

research institute, I plan to return to China to work as a professor at a

leading Chinese university, a position which will enable me to train many more

academic professionals in physical or analytical chemistry. At the same time, I

will also dedicate myself to turning my laboratory research results into yet

more patents and inventions, which can further be developed into products with

pragmatic applications.

During my studies in the United States, I will attempt at some detailed

observations of its capital market, the most mature of its kind in the world, to

acquire some necessary knowledge in company management and capital operation.

For ultimately my career objective is to establish my own company to manufacture

my own products, especially those environmentally-friendly chemical products,

based on my patents and inventions.

Yours sincerely,

I have demonstrated a keen mind since my early childhood. For years, I

consistently outperformed all of my classmates in such challenging subjects as

mathematics, physics and chemistry. I was thus chosen to represent either my

school or my city in a variety of provincial and national contests of academic

skills, in which I won numerous prizes. This impressive academic record put me

on academic acceleration several times. That not only enabled me to finish my

primary and secondary education in eight instead of the usual twelve years but

also sent me at 14 to a privileged class for the gifted at the Chinese

University of Science and Technology, a major cradle of the country’s scientific

and technological talents.

After two years of basic training in the gifted class, I chose electrical

engineering as my major and computer software programming as my minor, convinced

that expertise in these fields would stand me in good stead in an era of China’s

rapid economic expansion and technological modernization. As you can see from

the transcripts of my undergraduate grades, I excelled in both of these

areas.

Upon graduation in 1991, I won easy acceptance into the Institute of

Electronics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and became a graduate student

at 19, when most Chinese students would be just starting their university

education. At this institute, I narrowed my academic interest down and focused

it on the area of human and artificial intelligence, where the courses I took

were deliberately concentrated. It seemed to me that scientific breakthroughs

would next come in this area, which made it both challenging and promising. I

learned a whole lot about this area in the course if doing my thesis titled “The

Radio Shunting System in Railroad”, for which some experiments were conducted on

the basis of artificial intelligence.

My solid education paid off in my ability to take on a variety of

responsibilities in China’s burgeoning software industry. After I obtained my

Master’s Degree in Engineering in 1994, I first took up a job with a

telecommunication company, where I managed a trunk communication system that

resembled the cellular wireless system. A year later, I joined a software

company to develop CMIS program for China’s Post and Telecommunications

Ministry. It was a large project, and I made crucial contribution to it by

independently developing and finalizing one subsystem, which proved to be a

significant success and won me profuse appreciation from users. After the

completion of that project, I have been working for the Japan Brother Ltd. in

the area of software development.

The relative smooth path of my career notwithstanding, I have not had a

chance to lead a major project, although I have always finished my part of every

project immaculately. In spite of all my achievements, I feel that I have not

taken the full advantages of my intellectual capabilities. I now wish to pursue

still more advanced studies and thereby obtain an advanced degree so that I can

open more doors and shoulder greater responsibilities.

I believe I have acquired the necessary theoretical framework and

sufficient practical experience for further studies. My ability to teach myself

and conduct independent research allows me to attain competence quickly in areas

that I may at first know very little about. I never work just to finish an

assignment, but instead I always try conscientiously to improve my knowledge and

expertise through the work I do. In this fashion, I have become seasoned in such

fields as trunking system (telecommunications) and CMIS system (software). This

quality should help me as I seek to further upgrade my education, particularly

if I have ready access to the seasoned guidance of a strong faculty and the

convenience of state-of-the-art research facilities.

The University of Idaho is well known for its excellence in the E. E field,

complete with an accomplished faculty and modern research resources. These

should set a good stage for me to exercise my keen mental power and diligence.

If I am accepted, I am confident that I can make quick progress in the E. E

field, especially in the areas of artificial intelligence, image processing,

wireless communication, neural network and computer networking, which have many

characteristics in common and share many important principles. Due to the broad

applications of these technologies, I believe the progress we make in these

areas will help shape the future of the mankind. I would like t be at the

forefront of such progress.

As I am broadly grounded in EE and computer science, you may find me

qualified or more qualified for advanced studies in areas other than those I

have mentioned. If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know

any suggestions that you may have.

I wish to assure you that I have the necessary English language skills to

complete advanced studies in your Ph. D. program. I generally read or write

English without any difficulty. I have, over the years, not only read academic

or professional materials in English avidly but also memorized the whole

English-Chinese dictionary. There may be room for improvement in my oral English

and English listening comprehension. But I am sure my English proficiency is

sufficient for me to undertake advanced studies and research. Besides, I believe

I can improve my oral English by leaps and bounds once I start to live in an

English-speaking environment. All that I need to do is to set my mind free.

I plan to return to China after the completion of my Ph. D. studies either

to teach at one of the larger Chinese universities or to lead a high-tech

corporation.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

At present, the world has 17 international hotel management groups to

invest high-star hotel in Shanghai, and hotel of Beijing will reach 800 within

three years. As the hotel industry are continuing to expand, the demand for

hotel management talent are ever increasing. In China, it need to Thousands of

international hotel management talents every year. It is this that attracts me

to hotel management as a career because although am aware of the many pressures

and demands I would be facing, the sense of achievement and the knowledge that I

would be making contribution to my country in the future would be of great

personal reward to me!

I first encountered hotel management during work experience with a local

hotel, working as a tourist manager assistant in July 2008.It was a summer job

which was supposed to fill up my free time and increase my budget. I knew I was

going to like it because I am keen on meeting new people and visiting tourist

destinations, but I did not even suspect how much it would affect me. As an

assistant I was required to help the tourist manager accommodate the guests and

organize different kinds of entertainment. This job gave me opportunity to

become acquainted with the work of such people as hotel, club and event

managers. I was deeply impressed by their diligence to satisfy every need of

their customers. I have realized the responsibility of their profession, but I

have also understood how satisfied they are when their clients are happy. I will

never forget the face of the tourist manager I worked with when the guests

thanked him for the perfect holiday. His face was beaming. Despite the fact I

was only an assistant I felt satisfaction too seeing that the tourists were

content with our work. This feeling of gratification and even happiness more

driven me decide to study Hospitality management.

In 2007, with my academic performance of high school, especially three

years average point of math in high school were approximately 90(full score was

100),among the best in class, I entered Hebei university of Engineering. In

fact, when I graduated from high school, I wanted to go to study in America.

Because of living with my parents from birth to high school graduation, and

without having anyone around to advise me about the new abroad life I will face,

I was afraid and not fully ready to figure out everything by myself. This

changed, however, during my time at the HeBei University of Engineering. I

achieved a G.P.A. of 3.5 during my first academic year and second academic year,

and am confident that this third academic year's results will be even better. It

is more important that I can deal with everything by myself. Besides my

coursework, I joined the Student Art Troupe and Dancer, where I organized and

participated various school wide parties, Art Festivals and dancing

performances. I also participated in several community service activities,

including the Visited Autism Children in Rehabilitation Center, Cared for the

Elderly in HanShan Community planting tree in GuangMing Square and so on.

I also developed many extracurricular hobbies .I started to like reading,

which largely enriches my knowledge in many different fields. A Brief History of

Time by Stephen Hawking is one of my favorite books. I loved music and was

mastered in piano. When fretting, I would listen to some soft music then my

heart could clam down; when tired, I would enjoy some classic music or jazz to

relax myself; when playing Beethoven’s music by piano, I feel encouraged and

moved. I also spend much of my spared time in sports especially basketball and

soccer, in which teamwork are highly involved.

The success of these two years instilled within me a drive to improve

myself, prompting me to seek greater challenges and rewards; I am now ready for

the path to academic excellence and figure out everything by myself. I have

become a very ambitious and hard-working student, and the Johnson and Wales

University is ideal for my needs.I believe Johnson and Wales University will

provide me with the perfect atmosphere for bettering my life and my creative

abilities. And it will offer me much more than an education. It also will offer

me the opportunity to learn how to be an individual who can fulfill society's

needs both now and in the future. When I think of Johnson and Wales University,

the aspects that most impress me and fan my desire to immerse myself in this

prestigious learning environment are JWU’s excellent resources. It has an

outstanding undergraduate program. Its environment is conducive to learning and

growing. In addition to having some of the most recognized and lauded faculty in

world, JWU is committed to maintaining a diverse student population. As person

of Chinese heritage who grew up in China, and is now planning to embark on my

university studies in the United States, I see this commitment to diversity as

an essential element.

My ambition for the future is to become a fully qualified manager and to

work my way up in a large five star hotel or seven star hotel to become a hotel

Manager. I have read many case studies of people who have achieved this and I am

working hard in order to gain the skills and knowledge these successful hotel

managers have. And, I am absolutely committed to becoming a successful manager

and will work endlessly in order to achieve my goals.

Dear _,

Think about the decisions you have made that led to your current position.

Past: What choices have you made that led to your current position present: why

is astern mba necessary at this point in your life? future: what is your desired

position upon graduation from the Stern school I have always desired a career

that requires innovation, educated risk, and foresight. I learned to respect

these qualities from my father, a Lebanese immigrant who worked for years to

create his own business. Through his example, I have seen firsthand the

advantages and challenges of self-employment--the rewards to be gained and the

total commitment required. My goal is to create a business based on my own ideas

and efforts, and have made decisions aimed at bringing this dream into fruition

.After graduating from college, I accepted a position as the manager of an

established German restaurant in San Francisco. I had been the evening manager

there for nearly two years while attending college, and knew that the restaurant

was struggling. For several years, high overhead costs and poor marketing had

brought revenue to a minimum. I saw the position as an intriguing challenge; I

knew I could dramatically increase the restaurant’ s profitability. Immediately

after accepting the position in July of 1995,I addressed the most significant

problem: high overhead from over staffing, food waste, and unnecessary purchases

of supplies. I lowered each of these expenses while maintaining the restaurant’

s quality and efficiency. My next target was marketing. Inexpensive

advertisement in local newspapers, attractive signage, and Internet postings

brought in many new customers. In the meantime, I took control of the

accounting, eliminating the need for independent help. The increased revenue and

decreased spending had an immediate effect. At the end of 1996, the restaurant

reported a profit for the first time in six years. I remained with the business

until it was sold in 1997, monitoring these changes in order to provide lasting

improvement. Although the position made me realize that the restaurant business

did not appeal to me, those two years reaffirmed my desire to operate my own

business. I had not abandoned my education during that time; while working at

the restaurant, I had taken real estate courses in the evening and passed the

California State Broker exam in 1996. My brother and I launched our own property

management company in April of 1996,and it quickly grew. We currently have seven

commercial properties under management. Our responsibilities include leasing,

accounting, and property maintenance. In 1997, I began working as a broker with

a commercial real estate company, largely to gain the knowledge of retail to

improve the leasing and sales division of my company. I am currently employed in

a sales position with a private business bank in San Francisco.

I was hired to bring business into the bank, which rarely advertises,

prefer ring to attract business primarily from referrals. My responsibilities

include interacting with potential clients, selling loans and deposits, and

account maintenance. This job has given me better understanding of sales and

finance, which is crucial to the success of any business. Although my ultimate

goal is to grow our property management company into a full time business, these

positions in other industries have been invaluable learning aids. Property

management requires an extensive knowledge of real estate, banking, accounting

and sales. I now feel confident that I have gained valuable experience with my

work.

However, I know that earning a graduate degree will further enhance the

skills I need to develop a viable company. The Leonard N. Stern School of

Business at New York University will allow me to learn from the finest teachers,

interact with the brightest students, and experience one of the top graduate

programs in the United States. I can only anticipate the invaluable knowledge

and training I will gain from being a part of this program.

Although my work experience has been extremely important, the NYU Stern

School of Business will be equally as educational. It will allow me to

incorporate my experiences with other equally ambitious students, and to broaden

my goals, ideas and perspectives. A graduate degree in Management and

Organizational Behavior is a significant asset to any business owner. The first

year curriculum of accounting, management, finance, marketing, and economics

will enhance my knowledge of the basic foundations of business and management.

During my second semester, I will enroll in the track courses of Entrepreneurial

Studies. These classes will teach me advanced business techniques and their

successful implementation. In addition, Stern-sponsored, non-academic

entrepreneurial organizations will be both educational and enjoyable. I view

these as an opportunity to meet students who share similar goals. They will

expand my awareness of new business concepts within our quickly evolving

economy--which I hope to incorporate into my own company. The experiences

available at NYU are myriad, and a degree from the Stern School will propel me

toward the realization of my professional goals.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

Dear _,

During my first consulting project, I was asked to construct a sales plan for an insurance company. The first step was to meet Adam, the director of sales, to discuss forecasting assumptions. A list of questions in hand, I knocked on the door. To my surprise, Adam was very formal in his reception. He did not understand why we were meeting, so I explained that I would be creating sales plans. At that point, he became outright hostile, he barked out his nonanswer to my questions and informed me he was very busy preparing sales plans. Before I could suggest cooperation, I was ushered out, and the door slammed behind me. Too shocked to react to the secretary's condescending smirk, I attempted to grasp why a textbook opportunity for teamwork became such a spectacular failure. What had I done to attract such hostility? I had just wanted to help. I called my engagement manager to complain, but he just accused me of handling the situation poorly. I was crushed and convinced that I was not cut out for consulting.

To this day, I am not sure why Adam was so hostile. Retrospectively, I can only guess that he was insulted and threatened, because no one had formally requested his assistance. Instead, a twenty-two-year-old appeared in his office, ready to perform one of his most challenging tasks.

Adam and I never became friends, but the incident profoundly affected the way I communicate. Now, every time I interview a client, I begin by exploring and allaying any fears the person might have. I explain the project's rationale and seek a frank reaction. The rapport thus established makes the interviewees comfortable enough to share private opinions. This very human interaction not only secures me with quick yet profound insights, but also relationships that often far outlast consulting project.

Yours sincerely,
