Hi, everybody. This Sunday is Father’s Day, and so I wanted to take a

moment to talk about the most important job many of us will ever have and that’s

being a dad.

Today we’re blessed to live in a world where technology allows us to

connect instantly with just about anyone on the planet. But no matter how

advanced we get, there will never be a substitute for the love and support and,

The difficulties young Chinese university graduates have had in finding a job over the past few months have been making the headlines in the media and causing concern throughout society. Education professionals in China have all had something to say about it. A good number of them, referring to the current phase of social transition in China, have come out in favour of the mass education programme that has been practised in recent years in Chinese universities. Others have raised doubts about the reliability of the figure of only 70% as the rate of employment for new graduates, which they consider to be alarmist. In fact, according to the statistics provided by the Ministry of Education itself, out of the 2.12 million graduates in the general higher education sector in 2003, 640,000 had not signed a work contract by the end of their studies In these circumstances, it is understandable that in the current labour market in Shanghai, for example, new university graduates are settling for a monthly salary of 1,200 yuan, slightly more than double Shanghai’s minimum wage, at the same time as they are having to face significant overheads (superannuation, unemployment insurance, health insurance, etc.). If we take into account the cost of living in Shanghai (including accommodation, transport and telecommunications), it would appear that the salary of these graduates is barely enough to cover their basic needs . The purpose of this article is to better understand the current unemployment of young graduates, beyond any proposals being put forward in the context of higher education reform.

good evening, everyone!

throughout my years of being a student, i’ve had many teachers. none of them are the same, but the one that i’ll never forget and will always miss is my chinese bilingual teacher in the middle school i attended in seattle, ms. ho. she was a skinny, but stylish lady in her 50s. she was different from all the other teachers because she gave me something unforgettable.

ms. ho and i became friends right in the first semester i was in that middle school. at the same time, i was having a really hard time with my subjects. since i had just transferred from a bilingual school, where i had stayed for two months after arriving in the us, my english was horrible; my average grade was below c. i almost thought it impossible to learn english. then, one day she told me she strongly believed that i was capable of controlling my life, and i would be just fine. she said that she found we were much alike: both were stubborn, kind-hearted and a little bit simple-minded. she believed that i had the quality of becoming wise. she even said that she didn’t have any worries about me, about my not learning english. with her encouragement, i found the strength within myself and began to desire to work even harder. as a result, i soon proved her right, and at the end of the semester, i got a 3.8 average grade.

today, i still keep in touch with her, and she still tells me how she believes in me. sometimes, i’d think back, and wonder how i could handle all those things if it wasn’t for her encouragement and trust. could i be the person i am today? then, it struck me: what we need has always been trust and love of others; because these things inspire us to do our best, and to live our life to its fullest.

to sum up, i’d like to say to all of you: let us all appreciate trust and love of others and achieve our full potential in our life!

Nineteen years ago, almost to the day, we lost three astronauts in a terrible accident on the ground. But we've never lost an astronaut in flight. We've never had a tragedy like this. We've grown used to wonders in this century. It's hard to dazzle us. But for twenty-five years the United StatesSpaceprogram has been doing just that. We've grown used to the idea of space, and, perhaps we forget that we've only just begun. We're still pioneers. They, the members of the Challenger crew, were pioneers.

There's a coincidence today. On this day three hundred and ninety years ago, the great explorer Sir Francis Drake died aboard ship off the coast of Panama. In his lifetime the great frontiers were the oceans, and a historian later said, "He lived by the sea, died on it, and was buried in it." Well, today, we can say of the Challenger crew: Their dedication was, like Drake's, complete.

And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who were watching the live coverage of the shuttle's take-off. I know it's hard to understand, but sometimes painful things like this happen. It's all part of the process of exploration and discovery. It's all part of taking a chance and expanding man's horizons. The future doesn't belong to the fainthearted; it belongs to the brave. The Challenger crew was pulling us into the future, and we'll continue to follow them.

The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God."

I've always had great faith in and respect for our space program. And what happened today does nothing to diminish it. We don't hide our space program. We don't keep secrets and cover things up. We do it all up front and in public. That's the way freedom is, and we wouldn't change it for a minute.

We'll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.

I want to add that I wish I could talk to every man and woman who works for NASA, or who worked on this mission and tell them: "Your dedication and professionalism have moved and impressed us for decades. And we know of your anguish. We share it."

When I was little, I lived in a remote village in southern China with my grandparents. Like many kids in the countryside, I enjoyed digging a hole in the opening among paddy fields, using branches and hay to bake sweet potatoes and playing hawk-and-chicken with my friends. The opening field where I baked potatoes was leveled and a manufacturing factory has been built there, blocking the sunlight of our yard. The ancestral temple has been torn down and is now a small supermarket for villagers. The number of people knowing how to prepare Guo is diminishing and young people seem to be more interested in fast food and oblivious of traditional arts and skills. The village seems quite empty because most young people have become migrant workers in cities and only return home once or twice a year.

In the course of urbanization, villages gradually languish and die out when the passing on of traditions lose its population base. The total number of Chinese villages has declined from 3.7 million in 2000 to 2.6 million in 2010. Approximately 300 villages in China are disappearing every day. It’s saddening to see that many ancient villages, which survived warfare and natural disasters over thousands of years, have been demolished or annexed by cities in peacetime. Lulei Village, hometown for the famous mathematician, Chen Jingrun, was an affluent village in southern China with a history of over 700 years. Since the village obstructed the construction of the local railway station, it was almost torn down, including the former residence for Chen’s family.

We Chinese have been reveling in urbanization for decades. What worries me is that one day on this way to modernization, we turn back but are unable to see the link with our origins and ancestors. When we’re surrounded by skyscrapers and neon glamour, what defines us as Chinese? Urbanization does not mean brutally encroaching upon the countryside and strangling rural culture. It should not sever the ties with our beloved homeland. While promoting the country’s economy, it should also allow space for cultural diversity. In the ideal urbanization process, we should no longer emphasize the binary opposition of city and village, but endeavor to form a reciprocal relationship between the two.

Ladies and gentlemen, fallen leaves return to the roots. If we do not redefine and reorient urbanization, we will not be able to save millions of villages, neither can we revert to the origin where we belong.

Global citizenship means a world where people are treated and respected equally for who they are.

It is about helping people that are less fortunate.

It is about inclusiveness.

Interacting and working together is the core of being and belonging.

We need to realize how important our connections are with others in our friendships, our neighborhoods, our communities, and with our planet.

In another word, Global Citizenship is about people’s awareness of seeking the common good.

It is about everyone.Is my idea too abstract? Here I’ve got a vivid example.

When I was a child, my father always told me some stories about the past generation.

Once he told me a story about a doctor.

When the doctor heard people suffering in Spain because of the civil war, he came to help.

He saw many people dying just because they had no money.

Then he proposed a system that enabled the poor to have medical treatment.

It is the beginning of the idea of Socialized Medical Care.

After the war, the doctor worked hard to improve the treatment of tuberculosis.

In 1938, the second Sino-Japanese war broke out in China.

The fifty-year-old doctor came to help again.

During his years in China, he trained more than 1000 Chinese to be medics and doctors.

高中阶段的学习时间无疑是宝贵的，那现在占用大家的时间举办这次关于文明修身的演讲活动，足以显现出文明礼仪的重要性，其重要程度在某些方面，甚至远远超越了文化课知识的学习。

学习要先学会做人，学做社会人，学做文明人。人和兽之所以会有区别，就是因为人类懂得追求知识和美德。其实，关于文明修身类似的话题，我们大家都是从小就耳濡目染再熟悉不过了。为何要反反复复的强调呢?因为它重要，因为它是我们区别于自然界里其他生物的证据。

中国是世界公认的文明礼仪之邦，因为中华民族温文儒雅，落落大方!因为中国人民见义勇为，谦恭礼让!荀子云：“不学礼，无以立;人无礼，则不生;事无礼，则不成;国无礼，则不宁” 。礼貌待人是我们祖先的传统美德。世界迅速变化着，可美德的传承是不变的。我们希望古代贤人可以欣慰的看到，不只是社会科学在进步，人文素养也在提升。

可现实又是怎样的呢? “乱插队，公共场合大声喧哗，随地吐痰”，这些词汇似乎成了中国的代名词。然而，我们脚下的这片拥有五千年文化的文明礼仪发源之地，凭什么蒙受这样的耻辱。这种现状只能由我们自己用实际行动来改变。那我们又是如何去做的呢?

单看校园内的不文明行为，便可以用“比比皆是”来形容。衣着上，打扮不适宜身份，过分追求光鲜时髦;饮食上，浪费粮食，吃不了便随意倒掉;出行时，骑车的同学横冲直撞，步行的同学三五成群，甚至造成了道路的阻塞。再如随手扔垃圾，打架，爆粗口，同学间交往不当…这些现象，还是在校园内根深蒂固。

就说打架骂人吧，有智慧的人不会用诸如此类低级的方式发泄自己的情绪。我们应该要变聪明一点，学会控制自己的冲动。希望我们每一个人都亲力亲为，讲文明，懂礼貌，将不正之风赶出校园。

如果说文明是如何做人的总纲目，那修身就是文明指导下的实际行动。

在这儿说个我亲身经历的事，就昨天中午，我骑车回家后把车就搁楼道里。也怪我自己，把车锁上后钥匙忘了拔下来。等下午要上课的时候，我下楼发现不知道是谁已经把我车钥匙拔走了。没钥匙就不能开锁，我只能抬着车，去找人把锁砸掉。这事显然不是小偷干的，也许那个人只是认为自己搞了个恶作剧而已，可是却给别人带来了麻烦。

即使是像这样的小事，也能反映出一个人的素质。我们不要只重视书本知识的学习，更要注重自己道德品质，言谈举止的修养。 看看校园内的垃圾，想想我们距离文明到底还有多远?

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The title of my speech today is "CrossingtheSea" . An English poet by the name of Rudyard Kipling once wrote in this poem "We and They" :

All the people like us are We

and everyone else is They

We live over the sea

While They live over the way

We eat pork and beef with cow horn-handled knives

They who gobble their rice off a leaf

Are horrified out of their lives.

When these lines first caught my eyes, I was shocked--how could two people remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? Today's society, of course, is an entirely different picture. Those people who used to eat with gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.

Indeed, just take China as example; Our modern life has been influenced by Western style of living in so many ways that it's no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at McDonald's and even rather elderly people dressed in Apple Jeans.

However, these are only some expressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. What is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation's mentality. Just look around.

How many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?

How many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? Ask anyone who participates in today's speech contest. Who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? And I'm quite certain that if Confucius had lived to see today's China, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved expression of their passion.

It is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient Eastern civilization are already living under strong influence of the Western culture. But it is not only in China that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.

Take the United States as an example: During the 1980s, in face of the overwhelming competition from Japan, many American companies such as the Ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of Eastern culture.

Take the Chinese acupuncture as another example: This traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the West and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any Westerner as incredible in the past!

Ladies and Gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. We live in a particular era when countries, East and West, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. We live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race.To cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller. My dear fellow students, our command of the English language render sit possible for us to gain an insight into Western culture while retaining our own cultural identity.

Therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural exchanges and hence the mutual understanding between China and the rest of the world.

It is my happiest dream that new generation of Chinese will not only grow up drinking Coca cola and watching Hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.

To end my speech, I would like to quote Rudyard Kipling again:

Lost time is never found again. This is something which I learned very clearly last semester. I spent so much time fooling around that my grades began to suffer. I finally realized that something had to be done. It was time for a change.

Now I have a new plan for using my time wisely. I have set my alarm clock ahead half an hour. This will give me a head start on the day. I have also decided to keep a log of what I do and when I do it. Looking back on what I ve done will give me some ideas on how to reorganize my time.
