Dear _,

Nowadays the core advantage for an enterprise to secure an edge in the

global market is the valuable asset—human capital. More and more people have

realized that human capital, as a resource, has become more and more significant

for creating social wealth. Based on a survey of the management of the world top

500 enterprises, researchers have suggested that in the 60s, enterprises focused

on production; in the 70s, they shifted to marketing; in the 80s, they

emphasized capital operation; while since the 90s, they have attached great

importance to human resource management. This will inevitably result in more and

more needs for Human Resource Management experts. Therefore, I hope I can become

a professional in international business, particularly with insights from Human

Resource Management, Economics and Finance, serving clients of all lines of

work.

As an undergraduate student in Beijing Forestry University of China, I have

done sufficient preparations for my pending graduate studies in Human Resource

Management. Majoring in Logistics and Marketing, the vigorous and various

economic and financial program and relevant courses have allowed me to have a

close touch upon Macro/micro-economics, Econometrics, Statistics, Business

Management Theories, Accounting, ect, which armed me with a solid basis of

fundamentals. However, with constant fervor for Human Resource Management, I

didn’t confine my learning to a single academic discipline. I ventured further

beyond my curriculum to learn different courses, for example, I exerted great

efforts to study Fundamentals of Human Resource Management, Psychology and

Sociology, , which I view as necessary building blocks for a successful HR

professional in the age of globalization. Therefore, with my curiosity and clear

recognition of Human Resource Management, I plan to pursue my graduate education

at your program, where I can have a close contact with the renowned professors,

and I believe, under their rounded guidance, I will finally realize my ultimate

goal as a top-notched expert in Human Resource Management.

Business and corporations nowadays do not rely on professionals knowing

only rigid numbers or outdated facts or materials which were obtained from

textbooks, while they concern more about flexible utilization of knowledge in

the real business world. Bearing this in mind, I actively took part in a wide

range of internship. The valuable experiences in Mercers, Inc., benefit me most.

As the largest US human resource consultancy firm with substantial presence here

in China, I was very lucky to shoot the rare opportunity to practice under the

guidance of one of the senior consultant in Beijing Branch. During that period

of time, I have assisted leaders of the Human Capital Department for series of

projects, such as Cummings Motor Company, ZTE Communications Company. These

projects are mainly based on the priding proprietary intellectual property

rights IPE (International Position Evaluation) and 3P (Position, Personality and

Performance). What’s more, I took responsibilities of checking and analyzing

data for 25 dealers in Beijing regions and writing 5 compensation reports and

project summary.

From the experience, I deeply recognized that learning of Human Resource

Management in classroom couldn’t show me the full and real picture of reality,

even though they did impart in me the central principle that human beings are

not just particles of a giant machine in the organization. Human Resource

Management in reality is very complicated, which covers a wide range of aspects,

for example, economic perspective, behavioral analysis, statistics and business

accounting applications, and so on. Never before have I become so enlightened

and clear of the essentials of Human Resource Management. As part of

organizational management, it is necessary for me to understand other functions

of the organization, such as marketing, production management, ISO, etc. Such

great understanding, on one hand, proves my improved understanding of Human

Resource Management; on the other hand, brings great pressure on me, and spurs

me to explore more in this field since what I have grasped now is too

limited.

In order to balance my life, I also enthusiastically involved in colorful

extracurricular activities. For example, I have been once the volunteer in

Beijing Running Angel Foundation, raising money for the poor and disabled

children. In addition, I have planned and organized many school activities, such

as lectures of economic management, the 12th Capital University Student Green

Activity “Green Bridge”. All these not only enriched my life, but also provided

me a chance to truly experience how to take the fullest advantage of different

members’ unique talents, how to cooperate with them, which are very crucial for

my further career development.

After careful review of your university, I feel my studies would best be

suited there. With your advanced research facilities, world-class faculty, and

strong academic atmosphere, I will become knowledgeable in terms of comparative

analytical methods, interdisciplinary views toward human factors in workplace,

and economic statistics for multi-national organizations. I believe I will reach

out faster and easier to my ultimate career goal as a HR expert after studying

at your university.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

A fourth-year student grounded solidly in the basics of computer science, I

am writing in pursuit of graduate studies that I hope can help me acquire

cutting-edge expertise in software programming in general and parallel

processing in particular.

Intrigued by the power of the computer since high school, I have been

trying to stay on top of the computer science by concentrating my undergraduate

studies on those subjects that underpin the discipline, particularly mathematics

and electronics. To build up my solid knowledge in these subjects, I have taken

virtually all the related courses that the university has had to offer. These

courses include Algorithm & Data Structure, Mathematical Modeling, Network

Theory, Digital Circuit, Discrete Mathematics, and Electric Circuit. With a

sophisticated understanding in these areas, I have been well positioned to

appreciate the basic theories of computer science and their applications to

software development.

Aided by the firm command of the basics, I have found it not only easy but

also exciting to study the various subjects covered by my major. As most of my

classmates, I took a variety of courses ranging from AI to Computer Network,

from AI Programming to Knowledge Engineering, from Pattern Recognition to

Software Engineering, and from Database Design to Programming Language Design.

But I distinguished myself by my academic record, which places me as one of the

very top students in my class. My grades in these course never went below A or

B. I have also stood out as one of the few who have taught themselves Real Time

System and Computer Graphics.

Armed with sound training in the basic theories and applied technologies, I

have been able to move on into deeper and wider areas of computer science. Early

in my university life, I began to understand that the modern computer's base,

the Turing machine, was reaching its limits in AI. Gradually, I have narrowed

down my research interest to parallel & distributive computing, which I

understand can significantly boost the performance of personal computers by

giving them some of the functions of mainframe computers.

Of all the areas of computer science, parallel processing fascinates me the

most. The term first came to me when I read the book Computer Organization &

Design: the Hardware/Software Interface as part of my Computer Architecture

course. By teaching me how the performance of computers can be improved through

pipelining and parallel processing, the book reshaped my thinking in computer

science.

My lab experience deepened my understanding of parallel processing. In my

third year, I worked on a GIFT project with Dr. Komatsu, chief researcher of IBM

Tokyo Research Laboratory and Dr. Koseki, one of Dr. Komatsu's colleagues. The

project was to introduce the architecture supports that can allow compilers to

derive more parallelism from programs. These architecture supports include three

designs, a conditional execution mechanism to execute instructions without

normal conditional jump instructions, speculative execution mechanism, and a

dynamic memory disambiguation mechanism to execute memory access instructions

simultaneously.

As undergraduate students seldom get to be involved in actual research, I

took full advantage of the opportunity of working in the lab. I particularly

enjoyed the seminars held twice a week as part of the lab work. At these

seminars, I engaged in in-depth discussions with Master's students under Dr.

Komatsu's seasoned guidance. The lab experience is adding weight and insights to

my graduation paper An Improvement of Software pipelining using Loop

Transformations. In this paper, I will introduce a translation algorithm using

loop interchange and loop skewing. This algorithm can minimize the initiation

interval of loop nest to improve the performance of software pipelining.

Through my lab experience and other research, I have developed a long-term

professional objective: the advancement of the parallel processing technology.

While I have strong faith in this technology, I also know its limitations as it

is today. Some sequential algorithms can't be easily translated into fast

parallel algorithms and most compilers can only distribute works on one

platform. Another unsettled problem is that programming parallel computers is

now still a manual work. But even the modern language (like Java, C++) can do

some automatic translation work. If a compiler can be developed to translate and

distribute work into different platforms, personal computers will be able to

work like mainframe computers at a fraction of the mainframes' costs. This will

make it possible to connect all the computers in the world and speed up all the

processes.

To help take the parallel processing technology beyond what is capable of

today, I have to undertake more advanced studies. This, I believe, can only be

accomplished in a quality graduate program like yours. I plan to pursue a

master's degree with a concentration on paralleling and distributing compilers,

operating systems or computer networks, a combination thereof. With the training

that goes into such an advanced degree, I think I will be able to take great

strides towards fulfilling my professional objective. When I do, I think I will

be standing on the cutting-edge of the computer science.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My interest in Law stems from a fascination with resolving conflict and the

important contribution it makes to our society. I view Law as a career in which

I will have the opportunity to improve the lives of others and be able to

evaluate the nature of human relationships. I believe that I am suited to a

career in law as I work best when facing challenges.

Academically, I have always been a very determined individual, hence the

reason I knew that a degree at University would be the next step. I have a broad

interest in many subject areas yet feel drawn towards a law degree. The wide

range of subjects that I have chosen has helped me to become more open minded.

In fourth year I sat GCSE Arabic out with the school. This made me realise the

importance of organisation and required me to make use of my time efficiently so

that other schoolwork did not suffer. Therefore I decided to further extend my

academic achievements by preparing for the Arabic A level exam. My ability to

speak Arabic fluently and also read and write it has largely improved my

communication skills and the way I interact with others. I am also studying an

additional Higher which I feel has become less challenging because of my

efficiency in organisation and also my determination which drives me closer to

my ambition of becoming a successful lawyer. My choice in social sciences such

as Geography and Modern Studies has also taught me how to adopt a more logical

approach to factual situations and other competences such as improving my

knowledge of modern society and international political affairs that trouble the

modern world.

To complement my academic interests I engage in a variety of

extracurricular activities. I am involved in the school debating society. The

experience has taught me to use my own initiative in writing speeches and

developed my skills of public speaking and diplomacy. I am also involved in the

production of the school newspaper as I enjoy writing articles about major

issues in society such as international social issues. One of my main hobbies is

organising events within my Muslim cultural community as I enjoy the

responsibility as well as working alongside friends. My ability to motivate

myself is a key factor in my overall success. I am an extremely hardworking

person and I am committed to reaching my goals.

I thoroughly enjoy spending my spare time with my family and friends who

are the most important feature of my life. I am also keen on taking part in a

variety of sporting activities as I often organise a five a side football team

to participate in tournaments at the weekends. This experience has taught me the

importance of communication, teamwork and self-reliance. I am also a member of

the local gym were I attend regularly in order to keep active and fit. Moreover,

I frequently enjoy reading novels as well as broad sheet newspapers to keep

myself updated with world events.

My work experience with Miller Samual law firm in Glasgow fired and

reinforced my enthusiasm for a career in Law. I had the opportunity to shadow

administrators, solicitors and office clerks, observing critical procedures at

every level. Moreover, I feel that it is necessary to further extend my

experiences within a Lawyer's workplace; therefore I have decided to attend

another week of work experience in January 2007. This will allow me to reinforce

my grasp of what day to day life and work and is like for a lawyer and will

improve my awareness of what a career in law will involve.

As a result of my education and experiences I feel that I have developed

the skills necessary to meet the challenge that further education will provide

me with and challenges that I look forward to meeting and accomplishing.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I have always enjoyed and achieved highly in science and maths. I also

appreciate problem solving and the feeling of achievement associated with the

practical use of design and technology, which I studied to GCSE level.

Throughout the course I worked with materials including plastics, woods, and

metals and designed and built various items including a table lamp and a

propagator for germinating seeds.

I have been involved in various projects with my father, including erecting

a pergola, a wooden shed and building a large brick shed at the bottom of the

garden. I also constructed a wooden chicken coop to my own design. These

projects have given me an insight into dealing with building regulations and the

need for planning, design and accurate measurement. I have gained experience in

the use of building materials, taking both cost and physical properties into

account.

Studying civil engineering at university will provide me the opportunity to

further study the areas of science, maths, design and technology that I enjoy,

as well as to gain many other skills. Studying civil engineering will offer me a

wide range of challenging and fulfilling career opportunities. I would like to

apply for the foundation year, which after completion, will allow me to progress

onto the civil engineering course. I am particularly interested in how civil

engineering skills can be applied with maximum benefit to society whilst having

minimum impact on the environment.

I did two weeks work experience with a consultant paediatrician in -------

Hospital in ---------- during the Easter holidays of 2008. I also did two weeks

work experience with a general dental practitioner in ----------------. Both of

these experiences showed me the importance of communication skills, leadership

and teamwork in the smooth running of an organisation. After further

consideration, I realised that I would not be happy in the healthcare profession

and instead was drawn more towards civil engineering, which I feel is closer to

my interests.

During the last two years, I have participated in the school???s community

action group, which involved weekly visits to a retirement home in -------- to

organise a coffee morning for the elderly residents. We served tea and biscuits

and provided company to those who attended. During the school???s activities

week in June I helped out in classes at the ------- School for children with

special educational needs. Outside school, I did voluntary work at St. Anne???s

Hospice charity shop on Saturday mornings. I have also received a certificate

from Millennium Volunteers for completing 117 hours of voluntary work.

In school I am a silver prefect and am involved in the running of the

------ society. I enjoy languages and am learning ------- in my spare time. I

attended a one month intensive ------ course in the summer holidays at the -----

centre in -------. I have attended a twenty hour weekend course by I to I on

teaching English as a foreign language arranged by my school. I am a keen

gardener with an interest in permaculture. I grow fruit and vegetables in our

Dear _,

I am a person keen on challenges. Law will provide me with the kind of

constant challenge I have always craved, while helping me to improve my

analytical, practical & communication skills. Also my concern and curiosity

about society and its people inspired me to pursue this subject for my higher

education, as I believe Law plays an essential role in the changing nature of

society

My upbringing has honed my perception of society and people leading me to

be acutely aware of social injustice, inequality, exploitation, discrimination,

and religious fundamentalism, especially in a society such as the one I come

from - Bangladesh. I possess a desire, to struggle if necessary through my life

in establishing a society which will be free from exploitation and inequality.

As such, I have chosen to study Law, for I believe the proper implementation of

Law is the only potent weapon to obliterate injustice. I believe throughout the

history of the world, working classes have been deceived by the upper class

bourgeoisie and the elites - my ultimate goal in life is to establish the rights

of the socially deprived classes. I always have wondered why Law has not been

used to raise the voice of the working class, and why it has been used to

safeguard the interests of people who are exploiting. I seek a new definition of

human rights - the true definition, without exploitation and corruption

colouring the notion

My greatest wonder is why our society and the legal system, do not point

out economic exploitation as an abuse of human rights; for it is the root of

poverty, which elicits crime. If the creation of Law is to curb injustice, why

has it not been used to eradicate this injustice? Taking law as a subject for

higher education will hopefully help me find answers to my questions, and will

teach me the proper method of implementation

I am someone who is passionate to evaluate problems. I am not an extremist

but I do not hesitate to resort to radical measures if the situation forces it.

I believe, in a society, co-operation is more desired than competition;

competition doesn't necessarily bring rapid prosperity. I adhere to a

socialistic political ideology, and aim to devote myself in establishing true

socialism. I am from a country, which has been subject to military dictatorship

for over twenty years after her independence. My political consciousness grew

during the time, when my father was imprisoned by the military just because he

was a leader of a political party who opposed military regime. Police and

military jointly ran a brutal campaign throughout the country to repress

politicians, where they imprisoned and sometimes killed thousands of students,

politicians, professionals, workers, and even soldiers. These incidents severely

affected my family, making my childhood a turbulent time. After the military

regime failed, a western style democratic political structure was set up, which

gave nothing, yet increased the discontent of the masses, and created some

elites, who virtually control the country. Wealth and power both are centralized

to them, law is a puppet in their hand, and they control everything, from

economy to politics. Millions of people live below the poverty level, and there

is nobody, not one strong and resilient political party to represent them.

Extreme form of capitalism has taken over our country's social and human values,

and morality is at the brink of extinction. Corruption is everywhere, human

rights abuses are innumerable, political repression is paramount, money is power

and power is everything. This indisciplined violent condition of my country

created a rebellious nature within me that is why I have set my ambition to

restructure the socio-political structure of my country in a radical way. I

would like to utilize the knowledge I acquire from my life at university and

beyond to clarify and show me the proper way of implementation of my

thoughts

I have proved myself as an efficient and responsible student through

primary and secondary school, I have been able to maintain and improve my

grades, which are consistently good. Currently I am undertaking A' levels in

History, Government & Politics, and Bengali. Being an ambitious and

inquisitive person, even after completing a Foundation Programme with an overall

A grade, I have chosen to do three A' levels in one year to study in one of the

top British universities. History has always fascinated me; though this is the

first time I am studying this subject in detail. In Government & Politics, I

am learning about the procedures of law making and the system of politics and

government in different countries. Languages have always been of interest to me,

and my favoured loyalty is to my mother tongue - Bengali.

I have spent my time productively on extra curricular activities. I have

keenly taken part in debating, student politics and acting in television dramas.

I headed my school's debating society for one year and independently achieved

many prizes in speech competitions at local and national levels. My hobbies

include reading, playing cricket and table tennis, web browsing, etc.

The principal reason for my desire to study at UK is the quality of

teaching here and particularly in my chosen subject, Law. I also find exciting

the prospect of joining a university hee with international flavours and

exceptional research facilities. I believe University is a place for

accumulating more interests, for meeting people, for working hard, for finding a

niche in life. I feel I have the commitment and confidence of giving my best

during my university career and afterwards.

Yours sincerely,

Super

Global

University(超级国际化大学),是日本文部科学省在20__年推出的Global30(G30)计划的后续升级版。

Dear _,

“The Foolish Old Man Removing a Mountain” is an allegory known to virtually

every Chinese. The story tells that in ancient times there was an old foolish

man by the name of Yu Gong who was determined to remove the WangWu Mountain, a

mountain that blocked him and his family from having access to the outside

world, in an attempt to carve out a road leading to the outside world and hence

create conditions for his posterity to achieve economic prosperity. The project

was a Herculean task and, to make the matter worse, the old man was rather

advanced in age. His neighbors all came to dissuade him from the endeavor. But

the old man’s answer was that if he should die, his children and grandchildren

could succeed him. The day would come when the mountain could be removed

ultimately.

Inconceivable as they are, modern versions of this allegory occur in the

frequently impoverished mountain areas in present-day China. The mountain folks

resort to primitive manual labor (hence inevitably involving casualties) and

simple tools and usually spend many years, even more than a decade, to open up

routes inch by inch in order to have access to the market outside the deep

mountains to sell their farm produce, so that their descendants will no longer

be confined to the kind of isolated and economically unprivileged life that they

are living. As a student with a Master’s degree in Road & Railway

Engineering, I can never maintain a tranquil state of mind whenever I read of

stories of this kind. I tell myself that I have the obligation and

responsibility to help halt this dire reality. For this reason, I am determined

to seek a Ph. D. program in Communication & Transportation at your esteemed

university, a program that will enable me to reward my country with my knowledge

of the advanced transportation engineering technology in the world. Of course, I

am soberly aware that to be accepted into your highly-respected program I will

inevitably be faced with fierce competitions. Nevertheless, my sound academic

background, rich work experience and the ability to undertake independent

academic research all testify to my qualifications as a worthy candidate for

your program.

My choice for Industrial and Civil Airport Construction and Highway Airport

Construction and Highway during my undergraduate program at the Department of

Civil Engineering and Architecture, _ University, seemed to have derived from my

family tradition. My father has long been a construction engineer and my

interest in civil engineering grew as I saw my father working on construction

plans and drawings and picking up bits and pieces of civil engineering

knowledge. My academic performance at _ University, which is a key university in

the country, has been consistently characterized by top ranking, receiving

Student of Excellence award for four consecutive years. My solid and

comprehensive academic foundation and outstanding performance came to the

attention of the renowned airport construction expert Prof. _X, under whose

direction I undertook my graduation project Design of an Airport Runway. In this

project, I completed the overall design of a civil airport together with the

airport’s roadnet. The roadnet design fully met the relevant national standards

and the overall airport layout was rationally designed, leading to unanimously

positive evaluation by the reviewing panel.

My undergraduate program was immediately followed by a postgraduate program

at _ University, into which I was enrolled in my capacity as the top performer

in the entrance examination. On a fiercer lever of competition, I doubled my

academic efforts and managed to be among the top five in my class, winning

“Class-A” scholarships. My active involvement in research also bore fruits. I

published several research papers, including _, in such central natural science

journals as _ and _.

Entitled Study of the Low-Noise Mechanism of the Asphalt Pavement, my

Master’s thesis focused on those issues: the mechanism of noise production of

tyres, the parameters affecting the tyre’s noise, the noise-absorbing mechanism

of asphalt pavement and the pavement configuration parameters affecting the

low-noise asphalt pavement. The thesis offered in-depth analysis of the

effective voidage of the asphalt pavement and the pavement thickness as major

factors in reducing the noise production. The new subject as well as the unique

perspectives of my thesis won positive comments from the reviewing panel who

rated my work as “significant for the subsequent research on low-noise asphalt

pavement”.

My distinguished academic performance and research potential led to my

employment with _ Province Expressway Co., Ltd. which made me responsible for

the construction and management of the _ Expressway, a key national project. As

a major technical specialist, I was in overall charge of drafting relevant

tender documents of pavement, participating in the construction of the roadbed,

bridge, and pavement, organizing the spot check of the raw materials for the

asphalt pavement, holding meeting to discuss technical details of the asphalt

pavement, launching technical trainings and field inspections, implementing the

Superpave projects. The accumulation of rich and comprehensive experience in

construction and management, and the problem-solving skills, and the ability to

work effectively and efficiently, both independently and in teams, are the three

most important results I have achieved. Over the past four years, I have been

given the “Model Employee” honor in my work performance evaluation.

An equally important component of my employment is my independent research

work. Two more papers, Construction Craft and Quality Control of SMA and

Application of Superpave in _ Kaiyang Expressway were published in _ (national

core journal of highway transportation). Some experts believe my papers offer

detailed elaboration on highway SMA and Superpave pavement, providing important

reference for the construction of other expressway projects.

While feeling proud for engaging in national-level projects, I have also

gained an insider’s knowledge of China’s underdeveloped conditions of civil

engineering in road and highway construction. The areas of study that I will

focus in my proposed Ph.D. program are closely connected with those

conditions—the methods of designing asphalt mixture, predictive evaluation of

asphalt pavement performance, quality control of asphalt pavement construction,

and the regeneration technology of old asphalt pavement. I expect that through

your program I will be extensively exposed to the latest theoretical and

technical developments in the world academia and take up fruitful research. If

your highly selective program accepts applicants with sound academic

performance, rich work experience and promising research potential, I can

assert, without any shame of arrogance, that I am exactly the candidate you are

looking for.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

There is a rapid growth in global organisational concepts, crystallised in

Japanese business philosophy, to be as effective as possible in the most

efficient way. New technology involving networking information and automation

influences the behaviour of business and enables significant transformation.

This need to maximise efficiency and effectiveness in such a competitive age is

increasingly crucial to the success of a business. This is why it is an exciting

and fascinating period in both the commercial and economic world to study

Business Management.

Adaptability, creative thinking and the application of technology are now

intrinsic to managing businesses. I have developed these principles and enjoyed

the spectrum of sixth form study that has taught me to approach problems from

different political, economical and psychological perspectives. Throughout

Business Studies, to complement what has been taught I have researched real-life

business solutions and how they have been implemented, such as the responsive

marketing used by Coca Cola to prolong their business cycle and sustain major

profitability. Studying ICT has enabled me to examine the criticality of

technology in giving businesses a competitive edge by considering issues such as

organisational objectives, people and legal implications rather than making

decisions based solely on financial factors. Furthermore, studying Psychology

gives me insight into the human influences on organisational behaviour through

studying motivational theories such as the hierarchy of needs model proposed by

Maslow, whilst the coursework has developed my skills in collecting and

analysing data in order to establish trends and draw conclusions. Studying

English Language has allowed me to develop an ability to express my ideas

clearly and concisely.

I have worked for _ as a Tester, assisting in the development of _, the

fastest-selling PC game ever. It was a significant learning experience and made

me evaluate myself and better understand my strengths and skills, such as the

ability to easily identify discrepancies and communicate these effectively to

management so that problems can be solved. Recent experience at _ Ltd gave me a

taste of working within a larger organisation. Operating within two different,

but equally successful organisations has enabled me to see contrasting

leadership styles and corporate culture. Within college, I participated in a

paired reading project where I listened to and assessed readers lower down the

school which required a relaxed, patient and friendly approach with the younger

students, as well as punctuality and dedication. Throughout the past year, I

have represented the college in district basketball and rugby competitions.

I am a committed member of the Colts team at my local rugby side. I have

captained the team in previous seasons which required leadership, confidence and

diligence. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to a range of music, going to the

gym and socialising. I am a regular reader of the Financial Times, enjoy keeping

up with current affairs and business news. I enjoy reading a variety of books,

both fiction and non-fiction such as 'Making It Happen' (J. Harvey-Jones) where

his common sense approach complements the management theories of more staid

texts. This degree will equip me for my career in the unpredictable and fast

moving world of commerce.

Dear _,

I have always aspired to work in a field which requires a great deal of

drive, determination, care and compassion. It was inevitable that I would strive

towards a career in medicine when first introduced to the astounding world of

science. I became enticed by the workings of the world and was especially

fascinated by the sheer complexity of the human body, and the diversity of the

systems and functions working constantly inside of us to maintain and sustain

life. An ever enquiring mind and genuine enthusiasm inspired me to study the

sciences in more depth at A-Level, where my real devotion to a career in the

ever-changing and greatly rewarding field of medicine flourished.

I developed a keen interest in the body's response to illness and disease

during my AS-Level biology course. Independent research into pathology became

evermore poignant when the focus of media coverage outlined the deterioration of

our nation's health in terms of escalating instances of diabetes and heart

disease arising from, for example, childhood obesity. The realisation of the

magnitude of ill-health which surrounded me encouraged me to strive to make my

ambition of becoming a doctor a reality.

At 15 years of age, I was disappointed to learn that I was too young to

gain work experience within a hospital environment. Turning a negative into a

positive, I accepted the opportunity to carry out my experience at a Veterinary

Hospital and feel that from this I have gained indispensable interpersonal

skills, practical knowledge of clinical procedures and a logical approach to

working practice. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team enhanced greatly

my ability to communicate with both staff and clients alike, and observing the

daunting task of giving bad news developed my ability to empathise with

others.

March 20_ saw my attendance at a PARTNERS student shadowing event at the

University of Newcastle, where I attended a medical lecture and spoke with

current medical students about their experiences of university life. This, and

an overnight stay at Oxford University with many like-minded students,

reinforced my aspiration to study medicine and made me aware of the need to

possess the utmost determination and stamina to succeed.

I attended a PreMed course in September 2007 at Imperial College, London.

Practical workshops offered the opportunity of wound suturing and interpreting

X-rays; lectures offered a sound picture of all that medical school and a career

in the medical profession entails. A non-biased account was given of the

inevitable social sacrifices required to succeed in the medical profession, and

the continual academic commitment required, both pre and post graduate, to

accommodate the ever developing medical advances. The need to integrate

recreational and professional time management to maintain a balanced lifestyle

was greatly emphasised throughout the course. My love for running shall

therefore remain with me through the demanding yet supremely gratifying

challenge of both medical school and the medical profession thereafter.

For the past 3 years I have been and active member of St Vincent de Paul's

Society; a voluntary organisation whose aim is to offer help and support to

people in the local community. Focusing upon elderly care, I visit a local

nursing home on a weekly basis. My confidence has spiralled as my attachment to

the residents has deepened, and I feel I have gained as much pleasure from

offering a friendly face, as they have from receiving one. Interaction on a

one-to-one basis shows the evident importance of a holistic approach to care,

which is the ethos of the nursing home.

A career in medicine where life-long learning co-exists with the

opportunity to rise to new challenges is a deeply exciting prospect. Invaluable

skills and attributes gained in my preparations for university have affirmed my

conviction that a career in the medical field would be a most challenging, yet

rewarding vocation for me to pursue.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Drama is a way of sharing my thoughts and desires, as well as expressing my

inner self. It is the motivation that drives me through any challenge. I am a

well organised, hard working, self motivated and keen person who loves to learn

as an individual or as a team. I discovered drama in primary school, and

developed my interest through secondary education where I promptly became

involved in the ‘Drama after School Club’. Since then my love for the theatre

has grown. My course is really enjoyable and rewarding, and I love learning more

about theatre, therefore, I want to find a drama course which allows me to

explore all the aspects of the theatre in the hope of gaining a better

understanding of how the business of the industry works.

During secondary school I was involved in the school choir, later I

volunteered to deliver the Christmas hampers, which were made to give to the

elderly around the area. In year 11 I was chosen as part of the ACES programme,

a project that runs parallel with the Mentoring Education Achievement that

encourages young people to achieve high in their GCSEs. I am also a young leader

at the local Brownies where I coordinate crafts, write the annual letters to the

parents and lead other activities with the team. I’m always getting involved in

productions outside of college. I was recently involved in a pantomime at the

local church where I played a variety of major and minor roles. In the past I

have experienced styles of dancing, performing to the young and the elderly. As

a hobby I enjoy kayaking, it is a good way to relax and escape distraction. I

took up playing the piano and love to learn new pieces of music. Additionally, I

sketch and write poems which, I publish on the internet forum/blogs.

In college I aim for my work to reach a high standard and if I need to, I

will improve work in my spare time to reach the grades that I am capable of

achieving. In the course I have already studied practitioners from 20th century

European and world wide drama which includes O’Neil, Mamet, Godber, Artaud,

Cartwright and Irvine Welsh. I have also studied Stanislavski and his methods of

naturalistic acting including emotional memory and in contrast to him, Brecht

and his Epic Theatre. I have had experience at being a set designer, which

included sketching possible set ideas and organising everyone to help with the

creation of the set. As part of the acting unit, we had to research, write and

adapt existing text to create our own monologue which we then performed for

assessment. I have been studying various styles of scriptwriting, from this I

will have attempted my own in the styles, later on in the unit I will be writing

a ten minute long script which will be performed. At the moment I am devising a

performance based around a political issue; this will later be toured at

secondary schools. I have performed in many devised and improvisational

performances, which have helped me to communicate between my fellow colleagues.

I have found that I am more comfortable at spontaneous improvising. I have

assisted a door supervisor’s course by role playing situations for them. This

opportunity was extremely fun and enabled me to use my ability in a different

surrounding. At the end of my first year at college I participated in the Derek

Jacobi Festival, where I directed the play ‘Noises Off’ by Michael Frayne, where

I and my cast were rewarded with best actor, best performance and the staff

discretionary award. It was such an interesting and delightful experience to

direct my fellow colleagues.

Overall I am a hard working person, who is keen to get on with work, and will

try their best to succeed. Once I have completed this degree course I intend to

go to drama school, to study a postgraduate course depending on my chosen

discipline. Therefore to pursue my ambitions I believe studying your drama

course will benefit me and I will be an asset to your institution.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Buildings are a necessity in life, and I would like to be the next

innovative mind that will produce works as extraordinary as that of Renzo Piano,

Sir Norman Foster and Zaha Hadid. Neo-Futurism is a movement that interests me

because of the mix between art and technology which can be shown in works such

as Wembley Stadium or The Shard. I think this course will let me showcase my

creative, team work and IT skills that are fundamental in this field.

Art is a regular hobby of mine, and studying it in school not only made me

experiment with different media and techniques, but at A2, it allowed me to

think like an artist and understand, for example, the symbolism of a

Pre-Raphaelite painting such as Ophelia. Not having studied Art at GCSE meant

that I had to learn new techniques such as mono-printing or dry point within a

short amount of time and this progress is shown in my AS sketchbooks.

Mathematics is a subject I have enjoyed throughout my school years, however

I believe my AS grade does not reflect my full potential. Classical Civilisation

was a subject that I thoroughly enjoyed at GCSE. The modules within the course

led me to research about the history of architecture during the Greek and Roman

periods. I learned about the detail in which buildings were designed, from the

frieze on temples to common buildings such as homes and various key elements

which reflected a part of their culture.

English Literature allowed me to broaden my knowledge of Literature by

studying novels and poems. This subject has also taught me how to understand

someone else’s opinion and counteract with a valid argument through

essay-writing and class debates. I feel that this quality will be helpful when

discussing social and environmental aspects of designing buildings.

Computing enables me to understand the way in which a system works, and the

opportunity to create my own system as part of my A2 unit led me to understand

several aspects of computers such as programming, creating databases and working

with clients. I have been interested in CAD since I was introduced to it briefly

during Textiles Technology at GCSE and since then, I have practiced personal

projects with programs such as Photoshop and AutoCAD.

I enjoy helping with teaching lower school students as I usually help out

in art lessons on a weekly basis and have also taken part in a peer mentoring

scheme in which I was able to guide Year 11 students for their GCSE exams. This

is something from which I gained an insight about taking on responsibility and

having leadership skills. This year I am also part of the Student Council, and

as a sixth form student, it is my responsibility to ensure that input from all

key stages are being taken into account during organisation of events or simply

for new changes.

Volunteering weekly at Cancer Research helps me gain customer service and

work as part of a team for an important cause. I also read novels, and often

write works of fiction, including topics such as mystery, crime and coming of

age.

I regularly play badminton and I would like to carry this hobby with me to

university. Recently I have enrolled on an online course for creative writing in

order to broaden my writing skills. A personal visit to Bath earlier this year

also heightened this interest in past architectural designs from the Greek and

Roman periods and the elements which we still may use today such as arches or

aqueducts. I would like to study Architecture at university because I believe

that a combination of my skills and creativity will let me integrate well within

this course. I am keen to learn about how current technology is used to develop

extraordinary and unique buildings, taking culture, nature or even the past as

inspiration.
