Globalization: Challenges and Opportunities for China's Younger Generation

Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Today I'm very happy to be here to share with you some of my thoughts on the topic of Globalization. And first of all, I would like to mention an event in our recent history.

Thirty years ago, American President Richard Nixon made an epoch-making visit to China, a country still isolated at that time. Premier Zhou Enlai said to him, "Your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world - twenty-five years of no communication." Ever since then, China and America have exchanged many handshakes of various kinds. The fundamental implication of this example is that the need and desire to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.

As we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world's economy, and diplomats and politicians are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. Peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world. Underlying this mighty trend of globalization is the echo of E. M. Forster's words, "Only connect!"

With the IT revolution taking place, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. Our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshed into a large melting pot of humanity. In this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. We have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.

China is now actively integrating into the world. Our recent entry to the WTO is a good example. For decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. From the precarious role in the world arena to our present WTO membership, we have come a long way.

But what does the way ahead look like? In some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified then, in criticizing the globalizing world? Instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in debts and interest. Globalization, they argue, should be about an earnest interest in every other nation's economic health.

We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. This has become a reality. Multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favorable policy. They are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market place and a devastating presence to local businesses.

For China, still more challenges exist. How are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? How to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? How to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? And how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation? Globalization entails questions that concern us all.

Like many young people my age in China, I want to see my country get prosperous and enjoying respect in the international community. But it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. And, there might never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. And this is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech. Thank you.

正如我们今天所看到的，不同国家的环保专家们正齐心协力在全球变暖这一问题上各抒己见;经济学家们一同寻找着对付金融危机的办法，虽然这一危机只发生在一定区域，但它还是会阻碍世界经济的发展;外交官和政治家们则聚到一起探讨打击恐怖主义的问题。和平与繁荣已成为全世界共同奋斗的目标。如此强大趋势的“全球化”正应证了E. M. 福斯特的那句话：“但求沟通!”

随着IT产业的出现，传统的人类社会分界线也随之消失。我们的文化、政治、社会和商业都被放入一个人性的大熔炉里。在这个互相联系的世界里，没有局外人，任何地区性的不稳定因素都可能波及全世界。我们已意识到一个分裂的世界是无法长存的。

中国现在正积极地融入世界，前不久加入世贸就是一个很好的例子。几十年来，我们总是以自立为荣，但是现在我们意识到了参与和促成更为广阔的经济秩序的重要性。从世界舞台上的一个不稳定角色到如今的世贸组织成员，我们走过了一段漫长的路。

但是前方的路又将如何?世界上部分国家的人民示威游行，反对全球化。那么，他们责怪世界全球化有道理吗?他们又说，全球化只能使发达国家通过债务与利息吞并发展中国家的财富，而不是缩短贫富之间的差距。全球化，他们认为，应该是对其它国家经济健康的一种关注。

卡尔·马克思提醒我们，资本跨越国界，便会逃离对象国政治实体的管制，这一点已成为现实。跨国公司一直在实行寻求最低成本、最大市场和最多收益的政策。他们常常在政府做决定时施加强大的影响力，在全球市场上无情地扩张并在地区贸易中形成极强的杀伤力。

对于中国来说，仍然是挑战居多。我们如何确保从计划经济向市场经济平稳过渡?如何建立一个足够健全、足够广泛的法制体系来适应一个生机勃勃的社会的需要?如何在这个日益同化的世界中保持我们的文化特性?还有，如何树立我们这个爱好和平的国度的良好形象?全球化所牵涉的问题关系到我们大家。

The Chinese people, in their drinking of tea, place much significance on the act of "savoring." "Savoring tea" is not only a way to discern good tea from mediocre tea, but also how people take delight in their reverie and in tea-drinking itself. Snatching a bit of leisure from a busy schedule, making a kettle of strong tea, securing a serene space, and serving and drinking tea by yourself can help banish fatigue and frustration, improve your thinking ability and inspire you with enthusiasm.

You may also imbibe it slowly in small sips to appreciate the subtle allure of tea-drinking, until your spirits soar up and up into a sublime aesthetic realm. Buildings, gardens, ornaments and tea sets are the elements that form the ambience for savoring tea. A tranquil, refreshing, comfortable and neat locale is certainly desirable for drinking tea. Chinese gardens are well known in the world and beautiful Chinese landscapes are too numerous to count. Teahouses tucked away in gardens and nestled beside the natural beauty of mountains and rivers are enchanting places of repose for people to rest and recreate themselves.

China is a country with a time-honored civilization and a land of ceremony and decorum. Whenever guests visit, it is necessary to make and serve tea to them. Before serving tea, you may ask them for their preferences as to what kind of tea they fancy and serve them the tea in the most appropriate teacups. In the course of serving tea, the host should take careful note of how much water is remaining in the cups and in the kettle. Usually, if the tea is made in a teacup, boiling water should be added after half of the cup has been consumed; and thus the cup is kept filled so that the tea retains the same bouquet and remains pleasantly warm throughout the entire course of tea-drinking. Snacks, sweets and other dishes may be served at tea time to complement the fragrance of the tea and to allay one's hunger.

The six-year-old John was terribly spoiled . His father knew it, but his grandma doted on him. He hardly left her side. And when he wanted anything, he either cried or threw a temper tantrum. Then came his first day of school, his first day away from his grandmother's loving arms.

Lets take steps to banish some of the most common negative thoughts manyof us repeat to ourselves. Being in a negative space is harmful to our overallwell-being, because what you dwell on can easily become self fulfilling if youdont change your mindset.

1.Im not good enough.

This type of negative thought that can apply to many categories. Maybe youdont think youre a good enough mother or good at a sport. Even if you findyourself lacking in something, theres no need to keep repeating it to yourself.The human brain is an incredible thing. Be inspired by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor,Harvard-trained neuroscientist who suffered a stroke that left her unable towalk, read, write, talk, or remember her previous life. Dr. Taylor took eightyears to recover and has since then written a best-selling book about herexperience and appeared on Oprah. Keep on working toward something, and watchthe leaps and bounds youll make.

To accurately say that your family and friends dont care about you wouldbe a very rare situation. Maybe youre being too negative and overlooking thegestures of love they show you. They dont even have to be big gestures, butits the little things they do for you that count. And people may be reacting tothe energy youre putting out; perhaps you think they dont care about you soyou dont make any effort in your relationships. Start showing people you care,so they can show you back in kind. And if you dont have good relationships withthe people you know, whats stopping you from making new friends?

If you dislike a person in your work or personal life, focusing on her badqualities is not going to make things better. You need to let go of yourassumptions about her and know that she is human too, which means she makesmistakes. Either you move on and stop thinking and talking about her, or learnto approach her or think about her in a positive manner. Focus on her goodqualities, and repeat them to yourself instead of honing in on the unpleasantthings.

If you keep coveting what someone else has, then this may cause you to beresentful of them, which will open a whole other negative can of worms.Remember, what they dont have is your whole package. Be appreciative of whatyou have, because if you want to play the comparison game, remember that thereare people who are also worse off than you are.

Everything is within your reach as long as you work hard and have a apositive attitude.

I can hadle it

I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences “I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate”.

Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the university I always told myself “I can handle it” when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.

Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.

So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

我能挺过去的

I’m very glad to make a speech here! I’d like to tell you something about water saving.

As we know, nearly 75% of the Earth surface is covered with water, But about 97% of this huge amount is sea water or salt water. Man can only drink and use the rest 3%, but most of it has been polluted.

There are more than 400 cities poor with water in China. Millions of people don’t have enough water for drinking, many of them die because of lack of water . There are many big factories in China. They put the dirty and poisonous water in the river, such as the Yellow River, the Chang Jiang River, the Yangtze River and so on. It pollutes the river and makes people have many strange diseases. Many people don’t know how important the water is. They often think: I pay for the water I used, it’s none of others business. How foolish and how selfish the thought is. They don’t turn off the tap when they finish washing their hands in the public toilet because the water is free-paying. Most of the students in the university use big basins of water to wash fruits . Because they have paid a lot for the room fee. Some of the middle school students use the water for drinking to play jokes on others just for fun. But who has thought about our life in the future? Who has thought about the people without water? Who has thought about the future of the world?

Why don’t people know how to save it until we have lost it? Why don’t people know how important the water is until the last drop of water becomes our tears? Let’s save the water, for you, for me , for the future.

Reuse the water which you wash the fruits to clean the toilets. Reuse the water which you wash your face to clean the floor and furniture. Reuse the water which you wash the rice to water the flowers. I think it’s the good way to save water. It not only saves water but also saves money.

The water is just like our blood. To save water is to save our lives. Let’s keep every drop of water, for the people who don’t have enough water for drinking, for ourselves, for our children and children’s children。

Good morning dear young fellows from suntrans,

Today is my two months and two days celebration of working in suntrans.

This is my first job, and I am very glad tohave it, and to stand here sharing my

is very hard working. Secondly, I joined Maple’s team that day,although we

almost lost all of the competitions, everyone was so happy andfriendly and my

The second memorable moment for me was the birthday party held in May. I

never had such a birthday party before, what’s more, my birthday is the same

month as our General Manager Lu, and I felt very honored and grateful. I

card. I was so moved that day and had the feeling that I am a part of this big

family. When I blew off the candles, I made three wishes, firstly, make progress

The third memorable mmoment for me was The Second Experience Exchanging

Forum of Mining Investment 2015. This is the first time I took part in such a

big conference, and I was very excited and willing to do something for it. We

did work very hard for this conference, and even asked the Dragon Boat Festival

to contribute. This conference gave me a great workexperience and taught me many

things: for example how to do advertising and marketing, and a great knowledge

in mining industry. The most important is, our young fellows’team work is very

brilliant, and I love our company more thanever after this conference.

These are the three most memorable moments for me that I spent with all of

you in Suntrans, I hope that we can create moreand more in the future.

In this day and age, environmental

degradation presents great danger to the public. People in my country, and other

places, have to bear polluted water and haze day after day. As public awareness

of the need for environmental protection grows in these countries, it is urgent

to learn how to establish a green life style.

To achieve a green life style, we must adjust our behavior. This can be

done even with simple things. For example, we could sort out our trash for

better recycling. At home, we can use lights and other electricity only when

needed. We should properly maintain air conditioners twice a year so they will

run efficiently, and, even more importantly, make sure doors and windows fit

properly and are sealed so that we can use less energy in heating and cooling.

Other simple steps that make a big difference include using public

transportation instead of driving private cars.

Commuters can choose to take buses, subways or share cars with others,

which not only relieves traffic jams but also reduces gas emission.

In my mind, it is high time to establish a general concept of sustainable

development and green life style in China. The Earth has provided humans what

they need; it is time to pay back. Only through a green life, can we ensure that

we and our children live in an environment with green water and mountains,

without traffic jams, and in an era with better living habits.

各位家长：

我是本学期担任四(1)班英语教学的韦老师，很多家长也许是第一次见到我，大家彼此间可能比较陌生。首先，我想和各位家长谈谈两个礼拜下来，我对这个班级，学生英语情况的印象。这个班级的学生对英语学习的兴趣还是比较浓厚的，这两个礼拜，从课堂中的反应可以看出。每次我用多媒体课件上课，学生学习新知识的热情是高涨的。这说明，四(1)班的孩子在英语学习上拥有一定的优势。但是，本班学生整体动作很慢，不容各位家长忽视，两周多的学习下来，只有__×、__×等5位同学，基本上课堂上能很顺畅地完成我布置的练习。其他同学都是定定心心，一笔一划地书写，在第一个礼拜，黑板上的词组抄写，我就发现，有很多同学在抄写词组的时候，喜欢看一个字母写一个字母，这样以来，10个英文词组都要抄写5分钟左右。在某种程度上，动作慢，就是体现了某个知识点的不熟练性。

两周多下来，我们已经教了两个单元，第一单元在默写本默写过一次，在英语纸上默写了1次，总体成绩一般。我带了3——6年级两个大循环，比较熟悉这套英语教材，知道学生在各个年级段，该掌握到怎样一个程度。四年级的英语学习，在整个小学阶段处于一个绝对的主导作用，因为三到四年级的转换中，对学生英语学习的要求发生了质的变化，也许，你的孩子在三年级的时候，英语也没怎么多花功夫，也没去参加什么业余辅导或者培训，英语成绩基本在90以上，甚至是95分左右。那么，随着时间的推移，你会发现，你的孩子依然像三年级那样，回家后读读书、听听磁带，偶尔看看做过的英语试卷，那么英语成绩并不会像三年级那么相对优异了。四年级，英语的背诵和默写是相当重要的，培养孩子一个背诵和默写的习惯，就是在培养孩子对英语知识反馈的重要途径。所以，这归根结底，又会涉及到孩子的作业速度。速度快了，时间就挤出来了，就有时间多背背多默默，那么，他所学知识的较之前所拥有的，也就扎实了，这样，质量也就出来了。其实，这是最理想化的良性循环的学习方式。家长真的只是监督而不是陪做，这适用于每门科目，不仅仅是英语的学习。

下面，说说在我的英语教学中，一些常规性的工作。

1、在英语作业本方面，基本是1号、2号、自备本。一般情况下，英语作业会记在当天所要做的那本本子上，自备本一般是回家默写本。

2、每个孩子准备一本《英语笔记本》，记录下每一个单元相关的重要知识，有些是语法点，有些是注意点，有些是常错误点。总之，英语笔记本的作用是相当大的，因为是刚开学，英语笔记本上，记得也不多。接下来的时间，我会充分利用好这本英语笔记本，也请家长留下这样一个概念：英语笔记本上的内容是精华部分，是重要知识点，是您的孩子在考卷、练习中出错的习题。每天回去读、背笔记本上的内容也是孩子每天的必修课。读多少可以控制，但是要形成读、背的习惯。

3、4a英语书上、每个单元的a、e部分逐个到老师这里过关，我会在过关的部分做好记号，一目了然，家长可以随时看您的孩子，哪一课过关了，哪一课还不是很熟练，需要再加强读背的。

4、英语预习方面，听读课文磁带非常重要，预习时，整个单元的'录音，至少听上三遍。a部分是短文;b部分是单词;c、d部分是本单元句型练习。e部分是小对话。r部分是语音。g部分是内容延伸。在预习英语时，a部分在预习时，可以翻译成中文，b部分熟读，c、d部分，按照提示的句型结构，试着先写写。预习工作，做得越扎实，也就越能保障在课堂中学习的效率。

总之，提高本班同学的作业速度，是我们三位主课老师以及在座各位家长的当务之急，应该说是刻不容缓。让你的孩子养成自觉学习的好习惯，成为学习的主人，老师作为学习的引领者，家长作为督促者，真正让孩子相对地学的轻松，但是学得扎实、有效!

Strong earthquake hits China

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 has hit China's southern province of Sichuan, shaking buildings as far away as Beijing, Shanghai and Bangkok.

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties or damage from the tremor which the the US Geological Survey (UGS) earlier put at 7.8.

The epicentre of the quake was 93 kilometres north of Chengdu.

Wenchuan, which took full force of the quake, has a population of 111,000 people.

It is in an ethnic Tibetan area in Aba county which recently saw violent clashes between Tibetans and Chinese authorities.

According to some reports there was a second earthquake measuring 3.9 which hit the Beijing district of Tongzhou at roughly the same time.

Telephone lines in the affected area are jammed and there are still no reports of casualties.

Reports from Thailand say high buildings in Bangkok continued to shake several minutes after the tremors began.

"We felt continuous shaking for about two or three minutes. All the people in our office are rushing downstairs. We're still feeling slight tremblings," said an office worker in Chengdu.

China's tallest building, the Jinmao Tower, and other highrise buildings in Shanghai's financial district were evacuated after tremors were first felt.

"People were shouting 'get out, get out', so we all ran out of our dorm," said a student surnamed Zhang at a university in nearby Chongqing.

A spokesman for the China Earthquake Administration said it was still checking the epicentre and scale of the tremor.

I believe in our future

Honorable Judges, fellow students:

Good afternoon!

Recently, there is a heated debate in our society. The college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education at extraordinary places. But will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Will we be able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country? The cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.

The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.

As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. Though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place. I believe in our future.

different people have different career outlooks. some people want to become civil servants; some people hope to start their own business; some people dream of being freelancers, and so on.

however, my ideal job is teaching. firstly, i’m told that teachers have a high income. with the high income, i can open a training school to help the children in poor families with their education. secondly, teachers always have summer and winter holidays, thus i will have more free time to relax myself. more importantly, teachers are angels to students, who can pass on the knowledge to students as well as help them develop their hobbies and interests. i can’t imagine how happy i will feel when i see my students become elites.

in order to be a qualified teacher, i should read more books to acquire more knowledge, and train my patience and improve my communication and handwriting abilities.
