Linda was a good girl, but she was often late for school.

One day, she was late again. When she came in, Mr. Clark, her teacher said angrily, “I’ll tell you father if you are late again.” Linda didn’t want him to do that. Because her father was very strict with her.

The next morning, Linda got up early. She hurried to school. At the school gate, she heard the first bell, “What shall I do?” she asked herself, “I’ll turn it in first.” She decided. And so she did.

When she hurried into her classroom, Mr. Clack was already beginning his class.

“Linda! Didn’t I tell you to be here on time?” Mr. Clack said as he as her.

“I’m sorry, sir,” Linda tried to explain, “I’m late because I had to…?”

“I don’t listen to any excuse,” Mr. Clack stopped her. “If you can’t get here on time, I have to tell your father.”

“But Mr. Clack. It’s …it’s unfair!”

“Unfair! How dare you say that?” Mr. Clack said angrily, “I’ll report you to the headmaster.

“I was only trying to do a good idea,” Linda thought,“and now…” She couldn’t keep back her tears.

When the bell rang for the break, the door opened and Mr. White, the headmaster came in. he was holding a wallet in his hand, “Excuse me, Mr. Clack. Is this your wallet?”

“Oh,yes. It’s my wallet. Who found it? I must thank him.”

“Linda found it and turned it in before school started.” Mr. Whitesaid.

Mr. Clack face slowly turned red. He looked at Linda and said, “I’m very sorry. Linda. I take back what I said.”

“And I’m sorry. Mr. Clack. I’ll try not to be late again.” Linda said.

Life is a struggle. I shall never forget the most striking part of Henry

Wadsworth Longfellow' s poem -- A Psalm of Life: "In the world's blood field of

battle, In the bivouac of life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in

the strife!"

Ludwig van Beethoven was a typical "hero in the strife". He was not only

one of the greatest composers, but also one of the most persevering men. As a

deaf man, he went on working with his strong will in the last year of his life,

though he was not able to hear his own fine and original music. Another example

of persistence in struggle is Deng Yaping. She once said that her technique came

from continuous training, emphasizing the importance of daily practice to a

player.

As a student, I seem to be in a boat sailiug against the current. I must

make an effort to forge ahead. A little carelessness will result in being driven

back. Indeed, learning is a struggle against idleness and carelessness.

Following the examples of Ludwig van Beethoven and Deng Yaping, I shall take

great pains to urge myself on, moving steadily forward like a heroic boatman in

the rough sea of knowledge.

No Pains, No Gains

The proverb “No pains, no gains” means that you have to make great efforts

if you want to achieve success, for nothing but poverty can be obtained without

effort.

In history, there have been many famous people of great achievements. You

may claim that they are geniuses. But behind their successes, they have made

great efforts in carrying out their tasks. Einstein said “Genius is one percent

of inspiration and ninety-nine percent of perspiration.” He had been working

hard for many years before he finally worked out his theory of relativity.

Thomas Edison experienced countless failures before he finally invented the

electric bulb. Wang Junxia was able to win the world championship of long

distance race only because she had many years of hard training. Therefore,

diligence is the key to success. Doubtless hard work promises fruitful result.

Everyone is awarded the right to work hard in order to reach his goal.

Apparently, diligence is necessary to success. Happiness is nearly always a

reward for hard work.

On the other hand, idleness is believed to be the root of all evil. Anyone

who habitually likes idling but desires everything is daydreaming. We should be

aware that if we dream away our precious time, when we wake up, it may be too

late for us to achieve anything. So, as college students, we should never stop

working hard so that we will remain successful in the future competitions.

A snake passed by and said, "Snakes are truly the greatest. I have fifty!"

"So what?" said a new voice. Everyone turned around and saw a lioness.

The snake lifted up her head and looked at the lioness."Why do you speak? I have fifty babies. You only have one. That's nothing." The other animals said that the snake was right.

A Brother Like That

A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it.

"Is this your car, Mister?" he said.

Paul nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Christmas." The boy was astounded. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing? Boy, I wish . . ." He hesitated.

Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels. "I wish," the boy went on, "That I could be a brother like that."

Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would you like to take a ride in my car?"

"Oh yes, Id love that."

After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, said, "Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?"

Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the lad wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile. But Paul was wrong again. "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked.

He ran up the steps. Then in a little while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled brother. He sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car.

"There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day Im gonna give you one just like it . . . then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the Christmas windows that Ive been trying to tell you about." Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride. That Christmas Eve, Paul learned

what Jesus meant when he said: "It is more blessed to give . "
