1.如果你不清楚自己要选择一所什么样的学校,那么你不要选择提前申请、尤其是ed;

2.如果你希望获得几个录取和/或奖学金的结果、然后比较之后做出最优决定,你不要选择提前申请;

3.如果你希望把高三的成绩和活动呈现给学校帮助你申请,你不要选择提前申请;

4.如果在高三开学以后的10月底的时候,你的toefl和sat成绩还不理想,你不要选择提前申请;事实上,10月份的sat成绩一般可以被ed/ea的学校接受,但11月份的sat成绩就不一定还来得及了;

5.如果你无法在提前申请的截止日期之前很好地完成申请,请不要选择提前申请;

performance art explores the whole range of human emotion and can produce tremendous performances and visual experiences and with drama, in particular, we can go further than flesh and blood and express ourselves as somebody else and take on this ‘mask’. the most profound thing i have found when studying drama is that we can become any person in the entire world, and still be us

i have always had a love for the performing arts since i can remember; for there has never really been anything else i have ever wanted to do apart from act. but acting is not just a subject to study people, narratives or social issues – we can discover so many things about ourselves, why we perform a character this way: is it because this person is so much like us? there have been numerous qualities i have discovered about myself while participating in drama. in teaching, i have learn how to really connect with people and help them to explorer what their feelings produce and more notably, how we learn about others, about a single person just by the way they say a monologue

teaching has been a great experience for me because it has given me the time to evaluate my own performance and teaching skill, learning to become that character just a little but more. this has also been enhanced by the performances i have taken part in, learning to work together in teams to realise the dream of the narration and the vision of the director (for nothing really exists without the vision or image)

while experiencing other aspects of the performing arts, i have found that is has increased my performance skill on whole and expended my knowledge on the performance world greatly, dance, art and english all focusing on similar issues such as the commedia dell’arte, henrik ibsen, physical theatre and movements and philosophies. these subjects have greatly complemented my time in drama, and increased my confidence and ability in being a performer. being involved in 5 consecutive school productions, 2 amateur productions, teaching experience and a student has really influence me concerning the determination i will put into a career in drama and acting, and just working with these people and directors have really bettered me in the way i act, see myself and carry on with my life. the performing arts is such a brilliant profession to work in, because there is so much opportunity to explore the world

i know that i can offer the performing arts the time, the expense and the spark that it deserves. there is nothing else in world that i would devote more time to than being on the stage or acting in the street, and with the passion and determination to succeed behind me, i will give that spark and flavour that acting and the performing arts is all about. i know i can offer so much, because it is the only profession where, maybe just for one night, i can become someone else and do a damn good job of being that person – and i can easily say that i can offer the world, because performance and acting is my whole world. as well as enjoying drama, i have also taken a shine to philosophy and finding the reason for irrationality, and i feel particularly moved in amazement by the work of bob fosse and george orwell for their use of horror, sorrow and murder. and a great interest to the history of art, because so much of the story of us is portrayed in art and more so these days it is so unique how art and drama work together to produce movement, beauty and conception.

Dear _,

Computing and its applications have always fascinated me and for this reason I have found my A-level courses extremely interesting. This also has maintained my long-term interest in computer-related careers. I have studied mathematics, physics and computing to A-level and also during the first year at Hills Road Sixth Form College I re-took my GCSE English.

Last year and this year I have been improving my self-learning, and developing many skills with the help of the key skills qualifications and A-level General Studies. My sincerest desire is to become a computer scientist. Specifically, I am interested in exploring how problems can be modeled and solved using artificial intelligence.

I also want to learn about human cognition and machine intelligence. I have been studying the online debate over whether machines will ever become "intelligent" given the current course of research and reading about such issues as whether a machine can acquire "common sense" (as discussed in Hubert Dreyfus's book “What Computers Still Can't Do”). I have been exploring many different areas within the domain of artificial intelligence (such as neural networks, genetic algorithms, and natural language processing). The bottom line is that I want to be a part of this exciting field.

Over the summer I traveled to Russia, and thoroughly enjoyed exploring a very different part of the world. My other interests include current affairs and sports, such as football, tennis and general fitness. Ever since the start of sixth form I have been a successful member of the college football team. I have played basketball as an enrichment activity because it was a new sport to me at the beginning of sixth form. I also participated in a 5-a-side indoor football tournament at the college. In addition to pursuing my academic studies I would like to continue some of these sports at university.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

I have always enjoyed studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and I would like the opportunity to continue this study. Chemical Engineering appeals to me because of the challenges involved in the application of scientific theory to practical, real world problems such as how to deal with nuclear waste. I particularly look forward to studying fluid dynamics as I was introduced to this during the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). I am aware that in today’s world chemical engineering has an increasingly important role across a wide range of industries from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. The broad range of career paths, and the opportunity to contribute to society through technological innovation, is for me, one of the main attractions of chemical engineering.

I have applied to take part in the Year In Industry scheme during which I hope to gain practical experience, as well as greater maturity enabling me to go into my degree course with improved skills and broader experience. I also hope to study e-learning courses on project management and presentation skills run by the IChemE. In Year 12 I took part in the EES, which improved my understanding and skills in team working, time management, and report writing, as well as visual and oral presentation. Throughout the course of the project the team had to frequently correspond with mentors in industry and academia and this experience has broadened my appreciation of practice and application in a real life situation. In July I attended a week-long ‘Into Engineering’ seminar run by REACT Engineering. Working in two teams, we were given a design exercise based upon a typical decommissioning project. I also attended a Headstart course at Newcastle University, which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the main activities was to design, manufacture and test a small crane. I found both of these experiences very challenging, as we were given only limited time so we had to prioritise our tasks and carefully plan our work. This year a fellow student and I were awarded £500 by the European Scholarship Prize to fund a visit to Prague to do research for our A-level History coursework. I gained an understanding of the city’s culture and history and further developed my independence. During the summer I represented my school on a Connexions review of a government white paper on 14-19 education. I gained an insight into the government’s proposals and learned a lot about working with different groups of people. Last year I was part of the editorial team for the school magazine. I wrote a number of articles and I was responsible for ensuring that staff contributions were ready for the deadline. I also enjoy participating in a range of sports and have represented the school at football and cricket, which has further enhanced my team working skills. In my spare time I am working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. In September I completed a 4-day expedition in the Lake District, which tested my endurance but gave me a great sense of achievement. As part of the award I have been helping at the local youth café once a week, which I am really enjoying as it gives me the chance to meet new people. I also enjoy reading, particularly books on physics and Russian history. I am really interested in computers and I am currently trying to configure a Linux based file and print server for my home network.

For admission to a university in England you have to fill in a form from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). They for a very reasonable fee provide all applicants to unversities and colleges in the UK with a way to apply to up to 6 universities (or multiple courses at, say 3 universities). Part of the form (apart from all the obvious details such as name and address), is half a page where you are asked to write about yourself, your interests and so on. Inevitably you have to make it sound as good as possible, as you're trying to sell yourself to the universities you're applying to...I applied to the universities of Aston, Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Loughborough. All for an MEng (Master of Engineering degree) in Chemical Engineering, except for Bristol where I went for an MEng in Computer Science, so this is tailored towards those courses. Anyway... Here it is. I don't guarantee that you won't get bored! ;-). (NB this was written in the summer of 1999, and is therefore not too current!).Reasons for Course Choice

Since beginning secondary school, I've been very interested in Chemistry and Computing. Besides my normal schoolwork I've read around these two subjects. Because I am also very keen on Mathematics and Physics, I want to pursue a degree course that combines all or most of these. Both of my parents are Science/Engineering graduates and they have taught me some of the qualities needed for a degree course in this field. This has encouraged me to find out about the opportunities available. Aims

I have applied to several firms for sponsorship while at university and during a gap year, with the intention of getting Engineering-related work experience. This would give me valuable experience for the course at university. I hope to obtain a Master of Engineering degree and become employed in research and development in the oil or food industry. Eventually, I would like to do postgraduate study, and perhaps even teach Chemistry/Engineering. Interests

I play basketball, tennis, volleyball, and I like kayaking. By far my biggest sports interest, however, is orienteering. I've won several trophies for Andalusian and league championships, and I've helped to organise regional orienteering events. I have also designed the database system for my club. My greatest interest outside school is computing. I have done a large amount of web design. I help maintain the computer systems at my father's workplace; and I also do some part time work teaching people on a one-to-one basis how to use their computers. I like writing manuals or "notes" on things related to computers, and have published an article on web design in a small US computer magazine. I have written papers on the use of data-logging and other equipment for my school's science department. This year, I was responsible for laying out my school's entire yearbook using DTP software. Recently, I was employed developing a web site and training staff for an organisation in London. When I have time I play the keyboard, and also do some sound engineering: I used to operate the mixing desk at my local church, as well as help at my parents' workplace, which is a professional recording studio. I enjoy teaching and have given weekly tuition in Maths and English. General Points

I've lived in Spain for 14 years and am fluent in Spanish. In addition, my parents work with North Africans, Middle Easterners, Americans, Spaniards, Britons, and people of other nationalities. I have gained valuable experience growing up with many different cultures around me, and as a result appreciate the difficulties of cross-cultural communication. I have been part of several "King's Kids", teams which perform music and dance all over Spain. This entailed travelling away from home for 3 weeks at a time, and having to work with around 60 other people. I think that this has made me a fairly rounded person, and I therefore feel confident about "fitting in" with people from any culture.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

Dear _,

Life is one of the most complex phenomena in the universe and questions

such as 'how did life begin?' and 'what makes us human?' are perhaps as old as

man itself. As my studies have advanced and the boundaries between the sciences

have began to blur, the complexity of life, particularly on the molecular scale,

has fascinated me; I find it incredible that I, a living and conscious being,

consist mostly of just six common elements. As far as humans have come

technologically, our technology pales in comparison to the work of nature. This

complexity, however, has an underlying order and beauty that has really

captivated me. My fascination in biochemistry stems from my study of biology and

chemistry, both of which have long been the school subjects I have enjoyed the

most. This interest spurred me to read around these subjects during my studies.

Through reading books such as 'The Biochemistry of Life' by ... and 'The Selfish

Gene' by Richard Dawkins, as well as articles in publications such as New

Scientist, I have been able to more clearly discover what studying biochemistry

entails and appreciate the breadth of biological disciplines with which it

overlaps. This has reinforced my decision to study biochemistry, as it is a

discipline of great importance to many biological disciplines that I have found

to be of great interest through my extended reading, particularly genetics. This

appeals to my all-round love of science, which inevitably led me study all three

sciences to A2 Level. The rapidly advancing and cutting-edge nature of

biochemistry means that it will present many moral and ethical implications in

the future and these add to the excitement and relevance of the subject in

today's world.

I jumped at the opportunity to attend a biochemistry taster day at Imperial

College London during the summer of 2006. This proved to be a valuable

experience, inspiring me as to where an education in biochemistry could lead and

also giving me an insight into the practical work involved. My regular reading

of New Scientist and Chemistry Review magazines has allowed me to appreciate

science on a more global scale, outside of the classroom. This has also helped

to increase my awareness of some of the pressing ethical issues that our

scientific advancement will present us in the future. Regularly attending my

sixth form's debating society allowed me to develop the communication skills

required to discuss such issues. I have also gained essential life skills such

as time management and gained independence through my part-time work, in both a

local chemist and a bookshop.

My fascination in the world around me has not only fuelled my scientific

curiosity, but also my interest in foreign languages and cultures, which I

intend to explore as part of my gap year. I enjoy the fresh perspective that

travelling and embracing a foreign culture can bring to life. I find it

tremendously rewarding to be able to communicate with someone in their mother

tongue, as I discovered when I had a French exchange student stay with me last

year. This, coupled with my long established interest in Japanese culture, has

prompted me to recently begin teaching myself Japanese. Learning such a

different language is definitely a challenge, but one which I am enjoying and

intend to continue in the future. I strongly believe that in our global society,

the need for languages and an understanding of other cultures and customs is

becoming increasingly important in life and in the workplace. I excitingly

anticipate the vast array of opportunities that the experience of university

will open up to me and I hope to explore these to build upon and expand my

interests.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Basic research has played a key role in the evolutionary process of the

human race since the dawn of history. Though it may not produce temporary profit

sometime, it does bring about profound influence to our life in the long term.

Obsessed in the beauty of Nature sine my childhood, I decided to devote all my

energy to explore the secrets of Nature . When I was a high school student, I

borrowed the book "Atoms in the Family " written by Laura Fermi. I was deeply

moved by the research life of Enrico Fermi and his friends. They actively worked

together with common interests, hitting on significant discoveries through

mutual suggestion and stimulation. How I wish I could experience such

cooperative and original life someday.

I have devoted most of my time to learn Physics, Mathematics and Biology,

cultivated my intuition and imagination. Some problems were every difficult to

solve, they always haunted in my mind for days, but when after unremitting

thought, finally the inspiration flashed up. I felt that was one of the most

exciting and joyful moment of life thought, finally the inspiration flashed up,

I felt that was one of the most exciting and joyful moment of life .

My grades in the courses of Physics and Mathematics are the best in my

class To facilitate further study in Physics I selected the courses "Applied

Modern Algebra" focusing on the theory of group, ring, field and "The Principle

of Real Analysis " concerning the Lebesgue Measure and Calculus. In the course

of Lab of Modern Physics, I did many interesting experiments such as Laser Raman

Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction studies, Mossbauer effect, Optical pumping

magnetic resonance. Besides, through research work after class. I learned what

had not been taught before, e.g. how to model the real world, how to apply the

theory to practice and got more understanding about the projects.

As a student major in Optoelectronics at the Department of Electronic

Engineering, I am also versed in Electronics, Computer Science, Communication

System and Laser Technology through firm and a large quantity of practical

training. For example, I have made the computer simulations of electronic

circuits, programmed optimum algorithm for rapid search, designed and composited

a simple CPU project, In our Lab of Lasers and Optoelectronics, I completed many

experiments about tunable dye lasers, static properties of solid lasers and

Q-switched dyes, second harmonic lasers, holography and optical modulators.

These are all useful means for basic research.

Your graduate school has the marvelous academic environment and the high

quality of Ph. D. Education I have expected. I hope I could join you to learn to

be an independent researcher with broad base of natural sciences. I also hope to

combine the Chinese Ancient Philosophy with Modern Science in the United States.

Upon completion of the study, I shall return to my motherland and further my

research to do more contribution for the common benefit of society. I shall

return to my motherland graduate status endowed by Tsinghua University, so if I

can not get your admission. I have to study by myself while making a living.

The unforgettable song often sounds in my mind. "Climb every mountain, ford

every stream, follow every rainbow till you " till you find your dream. A dream

that will need all the love you can give, every day of your life for as long as

you live. I am sure that someday my dream of research life will come true.

Yours sincerely,

Dear __,

My initial interest in the petroleum industry and geosciences stemmed froman epiphany I had whilst engaged in conversation with a young, successfulDutchman in Dubai. This man was a friend of my Fathers who was discussing withme the terms of a Shell sponsorship through University, and essentially who Iwould aspire to become.

I had always known about the attractiveness of the industry which my Fatherhas been involved in for close to forty years and knew that it was where I wouldbe "destined to pursue a career"; the only question was, in which field ofwork?

I have always been fascinated by and excelled in Geography and Physics.Having achieved the Geography prize in both Higher and Standard Grade, as wellas merits in Physics. I have chosen to study Petroleum Geology/ Geosciences asit is a unique combination that will satisfy my interest and ability in bothsubjects and develop and nurture my skills to further aid my entry into theindustry.

My love of the Earth's natural Geography has long affected my ambitionsoutside of school. Skiing, scuba diving and fell running have taken me to someof the most awe inspiring places on the planet in pursuit of experiencing andseeing new things, as well as excelling my passion for travel. I have visitedthe Alps, Caucus mountains, Cancun and Dubai pursuing these activities. I alsoplay Volleyball with the Bon Accord men's team and attend weekly trainingsessions. I have also captained my schools volleyball team. Another of myinterests I adopted at an early age was athletics. I was dedicated to mytraining for five years and won many prized awards, including a Gold medal inhigh jump at the Scottish East District Championships, and fifteenth place inthe Scottish Cross Country Championships. My completion of The Duke of EdinburghAward to the extent of Gold Award is one of my most prided achievements.

It hasmatured me and taught me many invaluable life skills such as the importance ofrespect, responsibility, dedication and team work. As part of my award I wasnominated after application and interview by Laurencekirk and District RotaryClub to be their representative for the 20__ R.Y.L.A young leaders' camp. Thisinvolved me spending one week with 60 other nominated "young leaders" at theAbernethy Outdoor centre participating in an abundance of team based activitiesranging from kayaking to rock climbing. This greatly improved my abilities inleadership as well as operating as part of a group in stressful situations.Another of my achievements I pride myself upon is my position as senior prefectand my awards as both prefect of the term and year. This position involves mealong with my partner leading a team of 18 prefects and helping the seniormanagement team by representing the school in various areas of the schoolsystem.

My varied record of work experiences has taught me a lot about myself andthe "real world". Being a silver service waiter and barman at Drumtochty Castle, one of Scotland's most prestigious wedding venues has greatly improved mycommunication and social skills, and my seasonal job as a potato roager hastaught me the ethic of hard work and persistence.
