Dear _,

“Get out of here and never come back!” Forcefully pushed out of the pub, I

sat down against a nearby wall to scrub the dust off my shoes and regain my

composure. My pride was wounded, not because of the way they treated me, but

because they did not believe what I told them. It was the second time I had been

forced out of this particular pub, a place for gay gathering. This is part of my

research project “Health education model of preventing HIV/AIDS based on

employer-employee relationships”, which I was working on. I believed that in

order to effectively prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, employers, who are on the

top of business pyramid, should be first in line to know the disease well,

because they can leverage the sufficient resources necessary to exert great

influence on the disease prevention within their enterprises. This approach fits

the circumstances in China particularly well.

In face of this frustration, I didn’t give up trying. Before the start of

the project, the local center for disease control and prevention had already

counted the fifth reported case of AIDS virus infection, who later acknowledged

that he had once provided sex service in that club or dated his homosexual

partner. The devastating consequences if no intervention would be taken obliged

me to try other means. Working as a team, three friends joined my endeavor and

we handed out brochures outside the pub that introduced HIV/AIDS preventive

measures with the elaborately-designed slogan “We understand you by showing our

care to you!” Eventually, our persistence had been well paid off. Our respect of

their personal choice melted the toughness of the owner of the club and he

agreed to give a hand in sending the information to his employees and

clients.

My name is Yuan, Chen. I grew up in a Nanjing family, where my mother is a

senior experimentalist at the Key Lab of Reproductive Medicine of Jiangsu

Province. Because of her profession, our daily communication inevitably touched

on health-related issues like health care, disease control and prevention. She

showed me the importance of public health and its impact on all aspects of human

well-being. I was so intrigued by what my mother had devoted her life to that I

made up my mind to follow her footprint. My aspirations eventually led me to the

School of Public Health at Nanjing Medical University.

During my years of college study, I was recognized for my academic

performance and awarded with scholarships multiple times. Driven by curiosity

and a desire to enrich myself, I have come out top in my undergraduate class for

four straight years. Absolutely, college study is not only a matter of getting

perfect scores in the class, as I understand. Since my sophomore year, I began

to work on research projects at the Key Lab of Modern Toxicology of Ministry of

Education, which consists mainly of graduate students. I detected the effects of

pyrethroids (permethrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate) and their major metabolite

3-phenoxybenzoic acid on rat sperm motility in vitro with a computer-assisted

sperm analysis (CASA) system and then published two papers in English. The

research work proved to be especially rewarding. It provided an opportunity for

me to apply what I had learned in the classroom so that I gained a deeper

understanding of it. But it also armed me with strong computer skills and

laboratory techniques.

The direct impact of public health on our society makes it not only an

academic subject, but also a social issue. Instilling a healthy life style

concept in the community through promotion of healthy habits is as important as

conducting research. Upon this comprehension, I took part in the Red Ribbon Peer

Association of my university, an organization which aims to bring HIV/AIDS peer

education to the public, and to help find treatment for those in need.

AIDS is a very sensitive topic that people are very reluctant to publicly

discuss in China, due to the innate conservatism of Chinese culture. Government

also avoids talking about it by blaming lack of information. Gradually, the

disease has become a forbidden zone full of controversy and misunderstanding in

the public eye. People have either not heard about it, or just do not know what

to do with it. Some are so scared of it that they do not want to have any

physical contact with infected people. Even in the health care industry, many

people do not have sufficient knowledge of it, according to our surveys.

However, in sharp contrast to the public’s ignorance are the brutal facts that

we can no longer turn a blind eye. It is estimated that in China, there are

740,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, and the number is still climbing rapidly

year by year. Each year, nearly half of the new reported cases are under

twenty-five.

As a group highlighting this sensitive issue in the face of people’s

traditional views, we met with much doubts, disbelief and resistance. Many

people openly mocked and shunned us. “AIDS is a western disease. How can it

appear here?” “I do not want to talk to AIDS patients because I do not want to

be infected.” “How is it possible for AIDS to be transmitted between man and

man?” “AIDS is an immoral disease, and as long as I do not have sex with people

who are immoral, I will be safe.” Faced with such benightedness, we used real

stories, persuasive data, and vivid pictures with scientific relevance to help

our “students” understand the disease, and we encouraged those concerned with

the issue to join our organization. Gradually, people started paying attention

and we gained some credibility within some special groups. For one of our

events, “Tell the truth”, we invited AIDS experts, patients, and health

officials on the same stage, discussing the issue face to face with the pubic.

This event gained so much attention after some high profile media reported it

that inquiries about our project flooded our mail boxes from all over the

country. During this windfall, we received funding support from businesses and

government, helping raise our project to a new level. Subsequently, we spent our

school breaks and vacations in holding exhibitions, hosting seminars, visiting

communities, and conducting surveys.

Undoubtedly, fighting against HIV/AIDS is an arduous task and the road is

long due to the traits of the virus—its variability and immune suppression. But

then, “even a journey of ten thousand miles is started with your first step”, as

an old Chinese saying goes, and I volunteer to become even an inch of what

builds up this first step. In recent years, China has made some progress on

HIV/AIDS prevention and control, but a lack of advanced concepts and expertise

poses a bottleneck problem to major breakthroughs. This is the reason why I turn

to developed countries like the United States. I am eager to receive systemic

and more advanced training in epidemiology in USA and aspire to future

leadership in public health in China. This has led my decision to apply for the

Epidemiology M.P.H. program in the School of Public Health at the University of

Michigan. Holding the belief that one’s ability is not limited by what he

already knows but what he is willing to learn and do, I am ready to become more

than just a professional in the field of public health, but in fact a

professional leader.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

音乐类特长生需加试乐器演奏或提供指定合作培训机构/院校推免信或提供省级以上音乐比赛获奖证书复印件(需现场验原件);

Dear _,

Since studying Chemistry and Design & Technology at A level, my desire

to develop my knowledge of chemistry, incorporating the use of computers with

technology, has increased. I wish to study in greater depth the potential

interrelations of these subjects and look forward to the unique creative

possibilities that a greater knowledge and understanding of them will bring. I

wish to study both theoretical and practical applications of chemistry,

computers and computer aided technology at a higher level.

I have pursued two work experience placements, which have confirmed my

interest in chemistry and computer technology. They showed me, albeit in a

limited way, the interface between pure science and computer systems. I worked

in an analytical laboratory at I.C.I., analysing chemicals (e.g. using an infra

red spectrometer and gas chromatograph) and using databases. This improved my

computer literacy as well as developing other skills, such as responsibility,

teamwork, communication, listening skills and working to deadlines. I have

completed a CLAIT course and am interested in home computing and the Internet. I

have also helped to build a web site. As part of my Design and Technology course

I have been developing my CAD skills extensively by producing a range of 3D

models in Pro-Desktop. I was also rewarded with an 'outstanding effort'

certificate in Design and Technology, further outlining my passion and

dedication for the subject.

Out of school, I have a wide variety of interests. My main passions are

skiing and table tennis. In table tennis I have achieved a creditable national

ranking, and I am captain of the County team. In May 2001 I was given the

opportunity to compete in Finland as part of the ISO games. I have competed in

numerous national competitions and recently captained a team in the Junior

British League. I am now commencing a course, which will leave me as a qualified

Level Two Coach. Within school I have been school team captain. I am also in the

school football team, and am part of the 6th form league winner's 5-a-side team.

My involvement in sport has developed my leadership and teamwork skills as well

as showing me the dedication that is required to learn and develop skills. I

also enjoy music concerts and learning to play the bass guitar. I have also

completed numerous courses in swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and snorkelling. I

have travelled extensively around the world visiting Asia, The Middle East,

America, South America, and Europe.

I believe the courses I am studying, combined with the knowledge and skills

I have gained out of school in work experience and sporting pursuits will be

particularly useful for the challenge of degree level study at university.

Dear _,

Changing the bandage on an angry bulldog’s paw or trimming the hooves of a

2000-pound draft horse can be an intimidating venture. Curing animals requires

compassion, precision, and confidence; it is also an excellent way to learn

about practicing medicine and to feel the satisfaction of helping someone in

need. Due to my rural background, knowledge of animals, and love of science, I

began working for a local veterinarian at a young age. Later in life, when I

decided to become a physician, I saw that my veterinary experiences had prepared

me well for a career in health care.

When I started volunteering in an emergency room, I learned that humans

really aren't so different from other animals -- I needed to show my compassion

in order to earn their trust before I could heal or comfort them. When a child

or widow brought me their dying pet and pleaded for me to cure it, I had to

soothe the person as well as the animal. I used this calm compassion in the

emergency room when comforting the family of a father who had just suffered a

heart attack, or when talking with a husband frantic about his wife’s car

accident. I saw further similarities between human and animal medicine when I

shadowed Dr. Harry Williams in his family practice. I saw that his close

relationship with his patients led him to keep thinking of them long after his

office closed for the day. Likewise, as a veterinary technician, I had often

carefully considered how to help each animal. Compassion is truly a prerequisite

for any career in health care.

In my work with animals, I learned that perseverance is key to successful

treatment. Interruption of that treatment can lead to disastrous results. In

many rural communities near my home, I witnessed the consequences of the absence

of consistent medical care. As a farrier, I have worked in many old-order

Mennonite communities whose needs aren’t being met: when one client's daughter

injured her hand in a corn sheller, she was unable to get medical care because

facilities were far away and no doctors could come to their farm. The girl’s

hand was infected and not healing well. I did what I could, but I was troubled

that I didn’t have the expertise to treat the injury. On my next visit, I saw

that her hand had grown deformed. Had she been able to see a physician more

frequently, her hand might have healed correctly. Encounters of this kind have

revealed to me the consequences of medically underserved communities. I look

forward to working toward a solution to this problem when I am a physician.

A good veterinarian operates with precision. I have applied the careful,

exacting skills I learned with animals to my lab work. I am currently involved

in research on corneal endothelium with Dr. Carson Kennedy. In the lab, we study

mammalian corneal cells; eventually, we would like to describe and prevent

ophthalmic diseases such as glaucoma. Through this work, I have honed my

scientific skills and sharpened my analytical mind. It is exhilarating to catch

a glimpse of valuable knowledge, not yet known by anyone, which has the

potential to help many people. It is also very rewarding to know that I have

contributed to the advancement of medicine by providing research results that

will improve people’s health.

Perhaps the most important quality required to practice human or animal

medicine is confidence. In the lab, in the emergency room, and in the field, I

have had many opportunities to observe the importance of confident leadership to

a medical practice. Over the years, I have observed that the best veterinarians

and physicians handle each issue swiftly and appropriately, delegating tasks to

others with self-assurance. In every medical situation, someone must take the

lead role while working to manage the team. Leadership roles have always come

naturally to me -- I spent twelve years working toward becoming an Eagle Scout

and helping my younger brother to do the same. The composure I gained as a troop

leader helped me to excel in my role as supervisor at a large walking horse

farm. Since then, I have grown into leadership roles that required more

significant responsibilities. I am comfortable as a leader because I am

confident in my ability to ensure the health and safety of others. The

leadership skills I have developed will be a vital part of my work as a

physician.

When I began working as a veterinary technician, I did not fully realize

that the skills I gained would be so applicable to my eventual career as a

physician. Yet my experiences with animals have provided me with an excellent

foundation to continue my studies of human health and well-being. I am eager to

develop the medical knowledge I have gained thus far in order to become the kind

of physician my community will be able to rely on.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

Dear _,

A senior student at the business school headed by China''s tough Prime

Minister, I will graduate next year with a diploma to be conferred by the Quebec

Association of Certified General Accountants in Canada in the first joint

educational program of its kind between China and a foreign country. To build up

a great career upon this rare privilege, I am now applying for advanced studies

in your quality program, hoping that I can someday become one of China''s top

accounting experts.

At Tsinghua, the country''s most valued cradle of advanced talents that

houses my favored School of Business Management, I have been head and shoulders

above most of my fellow students in my class of 122. I ranked among the top 2

per cent in macroeconomics, top 3 per cent in macroeconomics, top 5 per cent in

international finance, and top 2 per cent in international trading. My

performance in mathematics has been particularly strong, with my GPA in related

courses probably the very best in the class. The CGA diploma requires completion

of 12 courses taught in English, of which I have finished eight, with a GPA

better than that of most others.

My distinguished academic performance won me the privilege of being chosen

as the only Special-Training Student in my class of 122 to join the

university''s Program for the Gifted. Through this elite program, I participated

in a challenging research project headed Professor Chun Xiyang, head of the

school''s accounting department. The project was aimed at finding the best way

to control cost at the North China Petrochemical Corporation, one of the

country''s best known companies. As part of my research, I studied the corporate

management systems in the United States, Japan, Britain and Germany, and

analyzed the structure of Chinese companies. By the time I finished my part of

the project to professor Chun''s satisfaction, I had not only broadened my

knowledge but also acquired the ability, unique among China''s undergraduate

students, to conduct research independently.

Taking advantage of the university''s emphasis on cultivating independent

thinking and practical research abilities, I have actively engaged in a variety

of research activities. I teamed up with several students to investigate into

China''s township enterprises and wrote a research paper under the guidance of

our professors. With the help of my professor in public finance, I studied the

country''s taxation system that is designed to divide revenues between central

and provincial governments, and I did this in comparison with the taxation

regimes of America and France. My article, China''s Taxation Reform, analyzed

the possible approaches of improving that system. In my third academic year, I

wrote The Accounting Structure in Share-holding Enterprises, an article that

dealt with the solutions to the problems in the accounting system of the said

companies. In my second year, I worked as an intern at China Industrial and

Commercial Bank and acquainted myself thereby with the prevalent accounting

practices of the country''s financial institutions. Such involvement in

practical research has added both depth and breadth to my learning of

accounting.

Much of my academic achievements can be credited to my solid command of the

English, which has allowed me to read international accounting journals with

ease. Among my regular readings are Accounting Review, Accountancy, Public

Finance Review, and others. I have translated Proposed Statement of Financial

Accounting Concepts. My English proficiency is also reflected in the scores I

obtained in various English tests such as TOEFL (633,10/97),GRE general (total

2220, verbal 660, 93%; quantitative 790, 98%; analytical 770, 96%), and GMAT

(740, 99%; verbal 40, 92%;quantitative 50, 99%). I am sure that, with such

language skills, I can pursue advanced studies in an English-speaking

environment.

In recognition of my outstanding academic record, the university has

selected me to enter into graduate studies without the usually mandatory

admission exams, a privilege given to only a few of the very best students each

year. I have, however, decided to turn down the offer. I believe I will be able

to learn more on the accounting/finance program by pursuing graduate studies in

your university. Your program of graduate research and studies is known to be

holding a leading position in the field. Under the guidance of your

distinguished faculty and with the benefit of your remarkable research

facilities, I am sure I will be able to ground myself solidly in my chosen

career. After my Ph. D. studies, I plan to return to Tsinghua, where I shall

devote myself to a lifetime of teaching and research.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

In the deepest recesses of my memories is the boulevard lined with Chinese

parasol trees located outside my house. When I was just ten years old, my father

put me at the back of his bicycle and rode me every weekend to attend English

classes in the nearby community center (English was not part of elementary

school education in China at that time). On this road of questing for my first

western education, I, as a girl who loved to indulge in observations and

meditations, kept an observant eye on the changing colors of the leaves all the

year round. The rotation of seasons and the cyclical changes of the trees

impressed me with the transitoriness of life and the urgency of making my life

substantial within its transitory span. My present application for an advanced

degree program at your esteemed university is by far the most important step in

my relentless efforts to make my life substantial.

Dealing with figures has been our family tradition. As my mother is a

statistician and my grandma a certified public account, as a teenager I had also

commenced my observations and reflections on figures and calculations in the

statements and reports that they had prepared with strong curiosity and

interest. This interested strengthened my love for mathematics, often described

as the “gymnastics of abstract thinking.” From elementary school to middle

school, it was virtually a rule for me to achieve straight A’s in almost every

course related to mathematics, a talent which has always made me feel proud of

myself. Deep in my subconscious, I knew that a career related to mathematics

would fit me most perfectly. Therefore, when I gained my undergraduate

admission, I chose to specialize in Mathematics at Beijing Normal University. I

believe that this specialty has provided me with a perfect arena to give vent to

my passion for mathematics. My dedication to studies in mathematics and

effective strategies of learning, plus voluminous readings of technical

literature in various academic journals, have led to my top third ranking in my

class and a number of major scholarships.

My greatest passion for learning mathematics was stimulated when I came to

discover the foundational importance in social sciences, the essential function

of mathematics behind its abstract concepts and number theories. When I first

studied Advanced Mathematics, I was not clear about the real use of abstract

mathematical theories. This kind of puzzlement lasted until I found that the

genuine function of mathematics lied in its ability to solve problems in the

real world objectively and scientifically, to develop human wisdom, to enable

one to arrive at higher horizons and to examine problems with insights and

discriminations. The courses that have particularly fascinated me most are

Mathematical Analysis, Higher Geometry, Probability Theory, Mathematical

Statistics, and Matrix Construction in Mathematics. Those courses allowed me to

experience the charm of mathematics’ symbolic language and that of mathematical

thinking, in addition to its omnipresent utility.

As an undergraduate, I am most proud of my experience of constructing the

Social and Economic Growth Model as a team member representing our university

during a mathematical modeling contest in Beijing. As our three-person team

lacked the experience of applying theoretical knowledge to practical problems,

we felt at an impasse in the face of the challenging task. I took some time to

examine in detail all the mathematical models we had learned in class and

proposed the idea of dividing the entire modeling into individual modules and

piecing them together to form a complete model. Eventually our team was awarded

second prize at this provincial contest. In retrospect, it is precisely this

experience that aroused my serious interest in the application of mathematics in

the realms of economics and finance. To further develop myself in this

direction, I studied a lot of optional courses including macroeconomics,

microeconomics, e-commerce, etc. Thenceforward, I developed a new objective—to

combine my knowledge of mathematics with economics and finance and to exploit

the function of mathematics in social life.

My undergraduate thesis, entitled Vector Quantity and Geometry, though

purely theoretical in appearance, is actually a vivid description of how

mathematical theories can be applied to reality. It focuses on precise analysis

of those potential yet absolute relationships between different entities and how

we can uncover and examine those relationships from mathematical perspectives.

Rated by the department academic council as “Class A”, the thesis has been

accepted by the editorial board of our departmental journal for publication.

Apart from cultivating my rigorous attitude for scientific research and

developing my analytical and problem-solving abilities, I have taken an active

part in extracurricular activities. With my strengths in mathematics, I passed a

number of certification tests with much facility, including Microsoft Certified

Professional, Microsoft Office-Use Specialist, and LOTUS 1-2-3. I have been

correspondent and editor for our campus radio broadcasting station and campus

website. My English proficiency qualified me as a volunteer working for the

Beijing Worldwide Chinese Businessmen Meeting. In summer vacation, I worked

part-time at a local accounting firm where I exercised my knowledge of

mathematics and skills of electronic computation to establish for the firm a

financial database. I also worked on preparing business accounting plans and

digitalized financial management plans for the firm’s clients.

My experiences of social practices have permitted me to understand how

mathematics can best be used. As far as I am concerned, my lack of advanced

academic knowledge, especially my lack of in-depth understanding of economics

and finance, and my lack of formal and systematic trainings in those fields,

have constituted my “bottleneck” for further academic development. The overall

situation in China is that there is an oversupply of theoretical mathematicians

while applied mathematicians are sorely needed. Interdisciplinary subjects

between mathematics and economics, such as financial mathematics, actuary

science, economic engineering, and mathematical economics, are virtually

nonexistent in China. The consequence is that China’s economic development will

be seriously hampered for the lack of those important sciences. Great Britain

plays a leading role in the world both in financial sciences and in education.

Those two factors have motivated me to seek advanced studies there.

In this Personal Statement, I would like to indicate to you unequivocally

my intention to specialize in financial mathematics, mathematical economics, or

similar programs of an interdisciplinary nature. My choice is motivated by the

consideration that in China virtually all financial professionals do not possess

a strong background in mathematics, thus they rely heavily on foreign technical

models and concepts. However, China’s economic conditions and models differ from

those in Western countries and any unquestioning importation would be

counterproductive. My plan is to probe into the possibility of developing some

economic and financial models that best fit in with China’s circumstances based

on a critical analysis of Western models and extensive practices. Projects in

those areas will be what I am most concerned with and interested in.

London School of Economics and Politics is reputed for its time-honored

history, respected for its distinctive status in economics and finance, along

with its unparalleled research and pedagogical standards. Advanced educational

concepts and methodologies there would undoubtedly broaden my vision and

perspectives, enhance my fundamental skills in devising and launching

large-scale cases. Most importantly, for a woman like me who has a penchant for

English culture in general and English literature in particular, going to study

in Britain will foster my spirit of independence the way Jane Eyre did. Nothing

can delight me more than to observe and to experience, with heart and soul, the

historical, cultural legacies of such a great country.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My interest in Law stems from a fascination with resolving conflict and the

important contribution it makes to our society. I view Law as a career in which

I will have the opportunity to improve the lives of others and be able to

evaluate the nature of human relationships. I believe that I am suited to a

career in law as I work best when facing challenges.

Academically, I have always been a very determined individual, hence the

reason I knew that a degree at University would be the next step. I have a broad

interest in many subject areas yet feel drawn towards a law degree. The wide

range of subjects that I have chosen has helped me to become more open minded.

In fourth year I sat GCSE Arabic out with the school. This made me realise the

importance of organisation and required me to make use of my time efficiently so

that other schoolwork did not suffer. Therefore I decided to further extend my

academic achievements by preparing for the Arabic A level exam. My ability to

speak Arabic fluently and also read and write it has largely improved my

communication skills and the way I interact with others. I am also studying an

additional Higher which I feel has become less challenging because of my

efficiency in organisation and also my determination which drives me closer to

my ambition of becoming a successful lawyer. My choice in social sciences such

as Geography and Modern Studies has also taught me how to adopt a more logical

approach to factual situations and other competences such as improving my

knowledge of modern society and international political affairs that trouble the

modern world.

To complement my academic interests I engage in a variety of

extracurricular activities. I am involved in the school debating society. The

experience has taught me to use my own initiative in writing speeches and

developed my skills of public speaking and diplomacy. I am also involved in the

production of the school newspaper as I enjoy writing articles about major

issues in society such as international social issues. One of my main hobbies is

organising events within my Muslim cultural community as I enjoy the

responsibility as well as working alongside friends. My ability to motivate

myself is a key factor in my overall success. I am an extremely hardworking

person and I am committed to reaching my goals.

I thoroughly enjoy spending my spare time with my family and friends who

are the most important feature of my life. I am also keen on taking part in a

variety of sporting activities as I often organise a five a side football team

to participate in tournaments at the weekends. This experience has taught me the

importance of communication, teamwork and self-reliance. I am also a member of

the local gym were I attend regularly in order to keep active and fit. Moreover,

I frequently enjoy reading novels as well as broad sheet newspapers to keep

myself updated with world events.

My work experience with Miller Samual law firm in Glasgow fired and

reinforced my enthusiasm for a career in Law. I had the opportunity to shadow

administrators, solicitors and office clerks, observing critical procedures at

every level. Moreover, I feel that it is necessary to further extend my

experiences within a Lawyer's workplace; therefore I have decided to attend

another week of work experience in January 2007. This will allow me to reinforce

my grasp of what day to day life and work and is like for a lawyer and will

improve my awareness of what a career in law will involve.

As a result of my education and experiences I feel that I have developed

the skills necessary to meet the challenge that further education will provide

me with and challenges that I look forward to meeting and accomplishing.

Yours sincerely,
