From a very early age I remember pondering questions that were, to me,
seemingly unanswerable: what existed before the Big Bang? Why is a paperclip
attracted to a magnet? Now that I am older and have a wider knowledge of current
physics, I can contemplate other, more involved questions. How is it possible
that a cat can be alive and dead at the same time? What exactly is holding an
atom together? I am fascinated by these ideas and am hungry to learn the
theories needed to attempt to explain them. I welcome the prospect of spending
time and effort working with the scientific community to achieve a wider
appreciation of the world we live in and trying to attain a level of
understanding as high as is possible in a single lifetime.
My main interest within physics lies in quantum mechanics. About two years
ago I was shown a video on the Internet by an astounded friend that explained
the results of Young’s double slit experiment (using electrons) in relatively
simple terms. I was stunned to see that a single electron can pass through two
slits at once, but as soon as its path is observed it ‘decides’ to act in a
completely different manner! My ignorance of the topic created a desire for me
to learn more about this astonishing idea and so I read ‘Quantum: A Guide for
the Perplexed’ by Jim Al-Khallili. From this brilliant book I learnt about the
way in which the electron transforms into a probability wave or “wavefunction”
and interferes with itself after diffracting out of the slits. The book then
introduced me to complex applications of this experiment and, along with various
magazine and Internet articles, I clarified for myself intricate ideas such as
Schrodinger’s cat and quantum entanglement. I also read ‘The Trouble with
Physics’ by Lee Smolin in which he describes previous attempts at unification of
various ideas in physics, such as the successful unification of electricity and
magnetism, or the unsuccessful unification of light and sound. He then goes on
to explain one of the current attempts at the unification of all known forces
and particles – string theory. I feel that reading on these topics has prepared
me well for undergraduate physics and I am excited at the prospect of studying
at a higher level.
To familiarise myself with how physics can be used practically, I requested
a visit to the Quantum Optics and Laser Science Research Group at Imperial
College London. I assisted a PhD student and his supervisor every day for three
weeks in their ion-trapping project that aimed to shed light on quantum
computing. My main job was to build a circuit to power an electron beam. The
beam was used to form ions from calcium atoms, as ions are more easily
manipulated. However, the circuit had to be built in such a way that it would
automatically adjust the intensity of the beam to form just the right number of
ions.
In my spare time, I am generally found playing the drum kit. After passing
Grade 8 with distinction I have taken up teaching and play in four different
music groups: a concert band, a jazz group, a brass band and my own funk fusion
band. I enjoy performing in and around London and annually touring European
countries with the school concert band. To keep fit I play football and table
tennis with friends. Competitively, I have represented my school on a number of
occasions in football, rugby and athletics competitions.
Studying all three sciences and maths at A-level has given me the
opportunity to explore a wide range of different theories, techniques and
problems and has provided me with a broad scientific training base from which I
wish to develop further. All of these subjects pose exciting challenges, but my
main passion is for physics. I very much look forward to immersing myself in the
subject in future years whilst enjoying other challenges of university life.

I can not recall a single day of my life when I haven't enjoyed the
pleasures of literature; whether reading one of Blake's poems or, Ken Kesey's
novels I have always felt enthusiasm for the English language. I developed this
interest further during my study of AS-level English where I particularly
enjoyed exploring language acquisition and investigating the linguistic
difference of British and American sports commentary. As a result of reading
books such as 'Brave new world' and 'The Da Vinci code' I have been inspired to
write a novel, and I would ultimately hope to see this published. I would also
like to study the classics, such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Fitzgerald and
Hemingway; I believe that a thorough investigation of the way the English
language is used in literature is, apart from being fascinating in its own
right, a sound grounding for later life.
I believe that the experience of university is principally a beneficial
life lesson: a necessary tool to broaden my reading and intellectual horizons. I
trust the stimuli I shall receive from university will be extremely important;
in particular being in the company of other writers and like minded people is an
environment I would thrive in. I feel this would lead to a constructive
atmosphere and consequently, the perfect challenge for me.
Having spent over a year in full time employment as a Legal Advisor I have
learnt many things: most notably time management on account of being required to
organise the workday schedule for me and others. Also in my area of work there
is a need for fast turnover which has taught me to thrive under pressure, yet
the daily challenge of uncooperative clients means I have to alter my approach
to suit, consequently my communication skills are essential and help me adapt
with ease.
During my time in sixth form I enhanced my diplomatic skills - such as
analytical debate and cooperation with people of different opinions - whilst
serving as my schools representative to the Stafford collegiate forum. Another
significant influence has been a trip I made to Romania; there I worked with
deprived communities and taught disadvantaged children to play the guitar -
whilst delivering various donated musical instruments to several churches. This
was a very valuable experience for me, as a result I would like to be in a
position, within my chosen career, to help others in a similar position in the
future.
In my spare time I take pleasure in various hobbies: I enjoy attending my
local book club where we read a diverse collection of literature from Allen
Ginsberg and William Borroughs to Danny Scheinmann. My favourite authors are
Aldous Huxley, Jim Morrison and - the pioneers of the creative non-fiction
movement in particular - Hunter S Thompson: their innovative approach to writing
is appealing to me. With regard to other interests, I like to think of myself as
someone who is helpful and interesting to talk too; I have enrolled on the level
one Counselling course at my local college.
Since finishing my A-levels I have had time to consider whether going to
university was definitely what I want to do. As a result I am now sure it is the
right path for me and therefore I am determined to succeed. Having the
experience of full time employment I now feel more responsible, disciplined and
dedicated to my goals.
After concluding my studies I would consider postgraduate as an option;
however, my intended outcome of studying at university is to pursue a career in
journalism which I have aspired to for many years. In particular I would like to
travel as a foreign correspondent or similar role in order to see the world. I
would also continue to concentrate on the development of my novel concurrently;
whichever route I take I believe studying a university will help me become a
more erudite individual.

The media's writing style today is owed to the 'New Journalists' of the
1960's and 1970's who transformed the approach towards Journalism. I am making
this application as I am fascinated by the vast scope which is covered by the
subject and how in today's society the media plays a major role in every subject
imaginable and affects everybody's life in some way. After completing this
course I hope to enter into Print or Broadcast Journalism and eventually I would
like to have the prospect of working in both of these forms of media. I have a
particular interest in magazines and Foreign Affairs and I am inspired by the
work of John Simpson, who has maintained his position of World Affairs Editor at
BBC News for over twenty years.
For my A-levels I chose to study English Literature, Theatre Studies and
French, because these courses have allowed me to develop both my written skills
and structuring the writing style that is so varied for each subject. In English
Literature we studied the era in which 'New Journalism' was introducing itself
into society by such Journalists as Tom Wolfe and Gay Talese. Their
'unconventional' works were published in magazines rather than newspapers, due
to the response from the editors who favoured the more 'traditional' journalists
of the time. Theatre Studies has required me to devise and interpret plays which
has enhanced my confidence, improvisation and time management skills, as well as
building on theory and historical context. When studying French we take a view
on current affairs from around the world today. We learn how to debate and
compose various pieces of written work documenting both our own opinions and
taking a neutral view. French A-level has also strengthened my skills to
successfully learn a language with its grammar, vocabulary and culture.
I have recently been on a five day work placement with my local paper. It
was a great experience where I gained the insight into the daily life of a
journalist and I was able to write articles which required piecing together
through photojournalism and interviews in order to produce the finished article.
It also provided me with the practice to prepare me for both University and my
future career. I have written articles for my school newspaper and hope to write
more in the future. Throughout my life I have developed a particular interest in
acting and the surrounding effects upon society that it creates. In 2008, I
received a part as an extra in a period film directed by Julian Fellowes,
recently previewed at The London Film Festival. I found it to be a good example
of the amount of work put into successful media which is unknown by the public.
It also showed me how intense the competition is within the film and media
industries.
I am an Assistant Leader at Dorchester Youth Theatre and I have the
privilege of working with teenagers only a few years younger than myself who
share my passion for performance and have had responsibilities, such as
co-directing various productions, whilst undertaking the role of Stage
Manager.
These responsibilities are reflected in my work life as I have worked in a
camping shop for 18 months; my time at the shop has allowed me to develop both
my social and interpersonal skills alongside my organisation skills. These
skills have been beneficial when taking part in expeditions as part of the Gold
Duke of Edinburgh Award.
I am taking a gap year commencing August 2010, in which I will go and work
as an Au Pair for a family living in Italy; I will look after the child as
required and teach him English. I am sure that this will help me to learn a new
language and experience its culture, whilst experiencing independent life
submerged in foreign culture.
I look forward to my University life and my future within Journalism and
where it will take me. I believe that I am well suited to the demands of a
Journalism degree because I have a genuine interest and the motivation to work
hard and succeed.

As I have come through life, I found out that even though I enjoyed various
jobs I took, the best of them all is the one the heart is sat on. Until recently
I would have only dreamed to study within the Art and Design industry.
So here I am keen to change that.
Unfortunately my early hopes of becoming an architect, thirteen years ago,
where shattered due to some unpredicted changes in my life such as financial
issues, frequent changes in location, two kiddies, etc. Certain constraints
diverted my path towards administration, then very subtly accountancy took over
and yet again, back into administration. I even went ahead and studied about
them as these choices seemed quicker to achieve and more rewarding financially.
Now, it beats me why? Therefore a few months ago I sat down and thought over,
realistically, that I’m at the point and the age where I need to decide what
feels right for me, what is my direction from now on and will Art and Design
remain only an unachievable dream?
Although as a teenager I started preparing for architecture through time my
choice took shape towards product design because I find it closer to my
aspiration and my guts. It feels the right choice for me; it feels just like a
home buyer finds his perfect home, that would foster him for a very long time or
like the parent that goes straight to his child at the end of the school
day.
Sadly enough for me I have never taken an official preparatory course in
Art and Design, but lately I’ve organised my time to do some reading (studying a
series of relevant books either purchased or borrowed from libraries), drawing
(started building my portfolio), self tuition of computer software (3D Max and
Photoshop) and took guidance from specialised people (mostly my relatives as mom
is a sculptor/painter, father designer – furniture and interior, brother-in-law
graphics and web designer) to catch up a bit of the lost time. Since I’m not in
my teen ages and considering the responsibilities around motherhood, I trust my
abilities to embark straight into an university course. And even though it might
seem a bit late and too hard to go through the process of starting a new career,
I’m willing to give my best as I feel as enthusiastic as a teenager.
What I can bring to this field is whatever skills I gained through work
(although I realise it’s not all directly relevant to this industry), my mature
and responsible thinking, my organised, my creative and meticulous character, my
talent in art, then hoping to mix them with the right education to get the
formula that makes a person feel accomplished and a job well done. This is why
for me the completion of this course is fundamental.
Although I have other responsibilities now, in my spare time music serves
me as a particularly rewarding hobby, then playing guitar, arts and crafts and
reading.
Within Product Design section I would probably focus more on the furniture
design and developing new objects that make life simpler using minimum and
environmental friendly materials and who knows what else ”the possibilities are
endless” as some might say.
No matter where I’ll study I know my choice will lead me towards my
goal.

The most important element of my classroom, my office, or my home is a
personal relationship. I have figured this out on examination of my activities
in high school (youth group regional president), college (telephone crisis
counselor, resident advisor), or profession (teacher). As a teacher I made a
point of getting to know every student in my classes personally. It quickly
became my experience that students were more willing to learn, work, and excel
when they were appreciated as individuals and when they knew that the adult in
the classroom genuinely liked them.
After a few years' experience teaching seniors, I accepted a teaching job
at the middle school with the freshman class that had just learned they would
not physically be moving to the high school. How would I motivate and get to
know these kids? Everything that I had ever heard about or remembered about 9th
grade made me want to turn and run. But what convinced me to take this job was
technology. In my interview I learned that instead of the library, I was to use
the Internet (the what?). I was told that I would receive a laptop computer
(aren't those the things that people with "real" jobs used?) and that the kids
could teach me anything I needed to know.
Computers became my thing. Immediately I began to learn how to surf the
Internet from 8th and 9th graders (Sanj and Judy said I was teachers' pet). My
kids opened up and set aside their raging adolescence to use technology to help
me and help each other. As the year with the freshmen continued, I was
overjoyed. First, my kids and I had the best rapport in years (gosh Miss Glazer,
are all of your PowerPoint slides gonna look the same?). Second, my creativity
in teaching increased as new doors were opened to me and in turn to my students
(conspiracy takes on a whole new meaning when the Internet is your primary
source). Third, I was learning new and exciting things. I had finally found a
combination of skills that affected my students in such a positive way that I
knew I had to share my findings.
I have since taken my computer knowledge, instructional design ideas, plus
my emphasis on personal relationships and applied it to teachers and students in
my district and other districts in the North Texas area.
Through the Learning, Design, and Technology program at Stanford University
I hope to continue on the route that started for me at the middle school. I know
that I will learn new things and have an opportunity to apply them to
educational settings. I also know that I will be able to establish relationships
with colleagues, professors, and other students. Although a master's degree is
the short term goal, I believe that my long term goal remains the same as when I
began using technology in my classroom three years ago: to see students better
educated through a curriculum infused with technology by teachers who do not
lose sight of the personal relationships that benefit all kids.
This long-term goal may be achieved by working in a single school, a school
district, or an educational center. It may be reached by teaching new teachers
on the university level, by instructing at-risk students in a county
after-school program, or by designing a terrific new classroom model and
implementing it through a regional education lab with a grant from the U.S.
Department of Education.
Whatever the job, my aim remains the same and as it did years ago with my
freshmen, I feel certain that I will use any situation to fulfill my goal to
benefit students (can you say optimistic, or is it opportunistic?).

It’s all about the headline. It’s about getting your point across in the
most direct way you can. These personal statements are very good example of
this, in just a few lines I have to get my message of why I want do a degree in
Journalism across to my prospective universities. That is one of the reasons why
I love to write, the challenge of putting over a complex thought or concept to a
large audience of people and convey it in such a way everybody will understand
it. As the great writer Hemingway once said, “My aim is to put down on paper
what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.”
My own personal experience of journalism started young, my dad used to
write for a magazine and take me with him when he went to interview people,
since then I have been fascinated with the industry. When I was 14 I was lucky
enough to get a work experience placement at “News International” in Wapping. I
got to work on the websites of “FiredUp.com”, “Revolver.com” and “Page3.com” as
well as have a tour of the offices of “The Sun”, “News Of The World” and “The
Times”, I have also recently been offered a day’s work experience at my local
paper and I am currently waiting for news of work experience at the BBC.
I pride myself on being well organised and thorough in my research. I have
also developed many skills such as interview techniques and being able to see
things from another perspective, a skill I have acquired through Sociology and
Communication Studies, analytical skills through Film Studies and Media Studies
and I have learnt about analysing and collating numerical data and factual
evidence in Psychology. Although I have already completed three A-Levels and two
AS Levels, I have taken a year out to study AS French, Sociology and Spanish. I
did this in order to improve my grades and to give me a wider choice of
qualifications as my previous subjects are all very similar with their syllabus
as well the fact multiple languages would be an invaluable advantage to have
when working in the area of communication.
Some of my outside interests are music, politics, the Internet and reading.
Music in particular is a great love of mine, I regularly attend “gigs” and
concerts and have been an active member of the “Sum 41 Street Team” for over a
year, this involves spreading publicity through flyers and posters to promote
the band, I find it very fulfilling and enjoyable. Another one of my interests
is the Internet, I contribute articles to a site dealing with issues such as
“top-up fees” and other important student matters, which I enjoy greatly and is
helping to improve my knowledge of university for the future. I have a part time
job waitressing at a local hotel which I do a few nights a week. It gives me a
sense of my own independence and responsibility, I also help my mother at the
local Red Cross during half terms and holidays cooking for the elderly and have
also recently volunteered to sell Poppies for Remembrance Sunday throughout my
town. Another activity of mine is being my tutor group representative for our
college’s student council and regularly attend meetings to deal with concerns of
the student body.
I am thoughtful, organised and handle pressure well, I love to write and it
is my ambition to do so, I believe I can bring many things to the courses I have
