Dear _,

My ultimate career objective is to become a freelance writer using

bilingual skills in the broad media industry. Making use of my experience as a

copywriter, I want to extend the possibility of my career in the literary

profession by acquiring not only English skills but professional knowledge

gained from the Media and Communications degree course

My affinity with languages stems originally from my primary school where I

received several awards in annual essay-writing competitions

Being encouraged by teachers and parents, I gained great confidence and

interest in languages. Reading has always been one of my most enjoyable

activities since infancy. In order to broaden my communication and cultural

horizons, I majored in German at my junior college. During this time, I also

studied English in London. My passion for learning foreign languages developed

after this opportunity and following this I enrolled in a French and Spanish

class as a part time student at the NANZAN community college

As for my business career, I did not hesitate in choosing to be a

copywriter because I felt I could contribute to the advertising industry using

my perceptive and articulate nature. I have worked in this field for nine years

and have been engaged in a wide range of advertising, such as making print

works, planning campaigns and producing TV commercials. These experiences have

Dear _,

Since studying Chemistry and Design & Technology at A level, my desire

to develop my knowledge of chemistry, incorporating the use of computers with

technology, has increased. I wish to study in greater depth the potential

interrelations of these subjects and look forward to the unique creative

possibilities that a greater knowledge and understanding of them will bring. I

wish to study both theoretical and practical applications of chemistry,

computers and computer aided technology at a higher level.

I have pursued two work experience placements, which have confirmed my

interest in chemistry and computer technology. They showed me, albeit in a

limited way, the interface between pure science and computer systems. I worked

in an analytical laboratory at I.C.I., analysing chemicals (e.g. using an infra

red spectrometer and gas chromatograph) and using databases. This improved my

computer literacy as well as developing other skills, such as responsibility,

teamwork, communication, listening skills and working to deadlines. I have

completed a CLAIT course and am interested in home computing and the Internet. I

have also helped to build a web site. As part of my Design and Technology course

I have been developing my CAD skills extensively by producing a range of 3D

models in Pro-Desktop. I was also rewarded with an 'outstanding effort'

certificate in Design and Technology, further outlining my passion and

dedication for the subject.

Out of school, I have a wide variety of interests. My main passions are

skiing and table tennis. In table tennis I have achieved a creditable national

ranking, and I am captain of the County team. In May 2001 I was given the

opportunity to compete in Finland as part of the ISO games. I have competed in

numerous national competitions and recently captained a team in the Junior

British League. I am now commencing a course, which will leave me as a qualified

Level Two Coach. Within school I have been school team captain. I am also in the

school football team, and am part of the 6th form league winner's 5-a-side team.

My involvement in sport has developed my leadership and teamwork skills as well

as showing me the dedication that is required to learn and develop skills. I

also enjoy music concerts and learning to play the bass guitar. I have also

completed numerous courses in swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and snorkelling. I

have travelled extensively around the world visiting Asia, The Middle East,

America, South America, and Europe.

I believe the courses I am studying, combined with the knowledge and skills

I have gained out of school in work experience and sporting pursuits will be

particularly useful for the challenge of degree level study at university.

Dear _,

I have always had an interest in science-based subjects, especially those

relating to biology. Whilst undertaking my A-level Biology course, the module

energy and ecosystems was of particular interest to me. My interest in the

natural world, and study of science encouraged me to further my understanding in

this area by applying to study environmental biology at degree level. I wish to

take this course to enable me to develop scientific skills that will provide me

with a greater understanding of the environment and factors that affect it. I am

also studying Chemistry and Maths at A-level. The practical element of my

chemistry course involves an understanding of procedures and precautions

necessary throughout all science-based experiments; I feel that this

understanding will improve my ability in practical elements of the course. After

studying A-level maths, I feel being able to interpret numerical data at a high

level will also enable me to develop my understanding of any numerical

information that features in the course.

I am keen on sports and outdoor pursuits. I have enjoyed a range of

activities from countryside walks to kayaking and abseiling. Because of this I

feel I would particularly enjoy the fieldwork the course offers. I have been

able to combine this interest in sport with a part time job as a leisure

attendant at local sport centres. As part of this post I was asked to lead a

youth sports and activities group which aims to promote sport among young people

in my area. This activity has also allowed me to introduce other young people to

activities that I have enjoyed. This role has also helped me to develop skills

that would help me while I am at university. The sports group involves arranging

individual sessions as well as trips out. This has improved my organisational

skills, which has reflected my ability to combine part-time work with college

effectively. Working as part of a team and serving members of the public has

also improved my social skills, making me more confident when working with

others.

I wish to study at university, not only for the knowledge that I will gain

from the course, but also for the experience of university life has to offer.

During my two years at college I have participated in various activities. For

example, I represented the college at an open day, volunteered as a collage

council representative for my form group, participated in a blood donation

scheme and was also involved in the shoebox appeal. These activities meant that

I have to be confident, approachable and polite. I feel these are

characteristics that will enable me to get involved with student life at

university. My ambition is to participate in conservation work abroad, before

gaining experience in a career based in this area. I feel the experience

outlined above and the knowledge I will gain from the course will enable me to

achieve this ambition.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

From a very early age, I have always wanted to be a healthcare professional

because of my love of science and caring nature. I attended a medical school

successfully completed my second year of study. I shared my accommodation with

dentistry students and I began questioning whether I had made the right choice.

I believe I was quite naive when applying for medicine as I did not consider the

job itself after graduating. I believe dentistry and medicine have many

similarities but the typical work activities, working conditions and career

development aspects are totally different. Taking into account my interests,

abilities and skills, dentistry is the perfect career and thus I ended my

medical career.Dentistry is a career thats challenging and rewarding. I want to

apply my scientific knowledge to help people maintain their health and

appearance. Dentistry offers the opportunity to be one’s own boss and own a

dental practice. I want a career thats hands on experience where I have the

opportunity to build long term relationships withy my patients. I have a passion

for oral care and am always educating my family about developing good brushing

habits.

I have a strong interest and ability in science as reflected by achieving

A’s on all my A-level exam papers. I was selected ’student of the year’ by

science tutors which was an outstanding achievement and portrays my competitive

nature. I am committed to completing a life long, rewarding career as a dentist

and am very excited about the lifelong learning opportunities presented by

dentistry. I am passionate about applying my scientific knowledge to help treat

people of all ages.

There is a great deal of personal satisfaction by providing an important

health service. I am a friendly, empathic individual with a caring nature. For

the past three years, I have been assisting my sisters by caring for my niece

and nephew on a weekend basis. This reflects my caring nature as Im quick to

offer my help to make life easier for others. I have been working as a sales and

marketing consultant for two years and have the ability to build long-term

relationships with clients and colleagues at great ease because of my friendly

approach. My duties involve cold-calling potential clients, building a rapport

and meet their needs by offering online marketing campaigns. I am a successful

team member and thrive under pressure with the responsibility of achieving sales

targets. I have further enhanced my communication, teamwork and organisational

skills which are of great importance for the interaction with patients and

running a dental practice.

I have a professional, confident manner and possess good business and

managerial abilities. I have devised successful marketing campaigns for 2 dental

practices which was an exciting experience. I have further realised my

entrepreneurial abilities and have a talent for business. I have excellent IT

skills which are necessary due to the increasing use of computers.

I have completed two weeks of work experience at 2 dental practices. It was

one of the most exciting experiences of my life and provided me with a further

insight into day-to-day dental management. I was offered the opportunity to

shadow a number of dentists, specialists in different fields from orthodontists,

prosthodontists to endodontists. I learned it is important to have good

communication and interpersonal skills, for interaction with patients of all

ages, cultures and personalities. The dentist’s typical day was diverse and

interesting. It was great to observe excellent teamwork and how vital everyone

was to the running of the practice. I observed a root canal treatment, where the

endodontists placed the patient at ease (patient centred approach), explained

the treatment fully and it was great watching the effective interaction between

the dentist and the dental assistant. I appreciate the dentist is a manager and

a team leader running a small business. This experience has further reinforced

my desire to apply for dentistry.

My main interests are music, sport and sewing. I am a strong believer in

taking a balanced approach to life. My current job is quite stressful and thus I

attend the gym after work with colleagues where we play tennis, go climbing and

exercise. I enjoy designing and sewing my own dresses and thus possess good

hand-eye coordination. I appreciate manual dexterity is required in dentistry

and is of great importance when treating patients.I am excited about entering

the dental profession and can assure you I will make use of all opportunities

that are presented. I believe I possess the ideal skills and attributes required

to run a dental practice. I am committed to running an effective practice

offering each patient the best possible treatment in a caring, supportive and

professional environment.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that

has made all the difference.--Robert Frost--Have you ever taken the road less

traveled? When you drive home from work, do you ever explore? Sure, it might

take longer than usual, and there may be unpleasant stops along the way, but

occasionally you will find an unexpected surprise. By casting aside strict

conventions and routines and by taking risks, we can achieve things we never

considered or thought possible. I find that many people in our religiously

capitalist society only seek the fastest, cheapest, and most efficient route.

While some industries hire to increase diversity and thereby innovation, many

dare not attempt anything new. In particular, many established architects and

developers fear taking chances and fear the risk of failure inherent in untested

methods. I, on the other hand, believe that architects must not feel constrained

by the past but must follow up on promising possibilities. Exploring

undiscovered methods and paths requires self-criticism, self-assurance, and

courage.

In my junior year in college, I doubted the teaching style of my instructor

in my first design studio class. I felt as if he pushed his own rigid ideas into

the students' creations and did not allow the students the opportunity to pursue

their own original designs. Fearing my intellectual growth might be stunted by

his lectures and dissatisfied with his teaching, I basically taught myself

design by researching and combing through hundreds of architecture books.

Through my own studies, I came to realize that architecture should be learned,

not preached. That semester, I further challenged myself by working on a design

of my own creation, a design not as signed by my instructor. While it would have

been easier to accept the instructor's lessons and just follow his ideas, I

realized that I could never take the easy way again now that I discovered that

the beauty of architecture lies in learning it myself. That semester helped

formulate my approach towards architecture and influence my design decisions to

this day.

Although self-motivation is extremely important, seeking the guidance and

critique of others is essential to good design since others can find what I may

have overlooked. One critic who has been particularly crucial to the development

of my work is Craig Scott, a Progressive Architecture Awards Winner in 1996, who

worked together with Homa Fardjadi and Sima Fardjadi. Craig was my studio critic

during the spring term of 1997. His instruction helped me achieve a level of

design that I could not have attained from books alone. Of greatest importance,

he taught me a combination of methodology and theory to the process of creating

designs. He taught me to begin with a simple conceptual spatial model, then add

site context and programmatic concerns to create an integrated building. The

application of a methodology to the design process made my work more structured

and rigorous than before. In Craig's studio, I designed a furniture workshop for

downtown Ann Arbor that was chosen as an exhibit in the 1997 Summer Student

Exhibition in the University of Michigan. Professors chose the most outstanding

projects in their studio and put them in the exhibition. Although this was

certainly not a major trophy, the exhibition represented my first accomplishment

in the studio and was a milestone in my architectural career. When I saw my work

in the exhibition room, all the failures and difficulties I had experienced

seemed worth it.

Later, I designed urban housing in downtown Ann Arbor for the fall studio

1997, which was also chosen as an exhibit in the 1998 Annual Student Exhibition.

For that exhibition, entitled "Taking Aim," each professor chose the best three

projects from his/her studio. In the exhibition, the alumni of previous years

and students from other architecture schools were invited to share our success.

These exhibitions were important to me not only because my designs were chosen,

but also because they gave me the opportunity to display my work before the most

important critics of all--the general public, which included the students and

teachers from different years and different schools. I plan to continue my

studies at the graduate school level to have the opportunity to interact and

share knowledge with students who are as focused and excited about architecture

as I am. I have visited Harvard Graduate School of Design several times, and

each time I left impressed and enlightened by the variety and complexity of the

students' work. The work I saw at GSD had that same element of innovation and

freshness that I strive for, the one that goes beyond the ordinary path. I want

to be an explorer and to face challenges that I can solve with sheer will and

creativity.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

Dear _,

Thousands have tried to make their personal statement, witty and exciting,

but have failed to make the grade. Again and again admissions tutors have bowed

their heads in disappointment in not finding that special something needed to

make it different from everyone else's. But there will be one, just one who will

stand out from the crowd; one personal statement will be so amazing and

spectacular that all the universities across the land will want this person in

their university. As Thomas Edison said "I have not failed. I've just found

10,000 ways that won't work." But even Thomas Edison made fantastic discoveries,

which changed his life and this world forever, and by reading this personal

statement you are doing the same.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the study of Music, Law and Psychology, I have

decided to study Psychology at university. My interests in this subject first

came about when I achieved my first work experience in a primary school, and

also doing other work experiences in holiday clubs. I then decided to do

Psychology as an AS level in my 2nd year of A levels, so I can broaden my

knowledge of the subject and confirm that Psychology was the right degree to

study at university.

Since studying Psychology at greater depth at AS level, I have gained a

much greater understanding in which Psychology affects human society. Our

expanding knowledge of Psychology has given us insight into the ways in which we

live, work and socialise in the modern world. Psychologists to date have given

us answers about the human mind, which have influenced us in the way we present

ourselves in human society, in which I consider it to be truly the "social

science of society". I keep myself aware of all the developments in Psychology

and particularly child Psychology, by reading such publications as Psychology

Review, which looks at demystifying Psychology, Psychologists experiments and

updates on their research and an exam column for help with exam techniques, as

well as using the Internet to broaden my knowledge of the subject.

Over the years I have been involved in a range of different work

experiences. The first placement I was involved in was in 2000, where I was

working in a reception class at Kingsley Primary School for 2 weeks. I had

various responsibilities where I had to supervise a group of 3-5 children whilst

they participated in various activities such as Snakes and Ladders, which

teaches them about Maths, being 1st 2nd and 3rd in the game. I had to supervise

in other year group activities such as assembly, break and lunch times. I also

helped the teacher set up the classroom in the morning and at the end of lunch

to get ready for the morning and afternoons activities. It was a very rewarding

experience and through it I gained valuable skills, I learned to be more patient

and more creative, also learning to organise and handle a group of 4-5 year olds

(which is not an easy task!) Currently I have a part-time job at a busy

supermarket, which has enabled me to work and deal with a diverse range of

people and it also gives me some financial independence.

At college I am a member of the schools music committee and I'm a member of

the multi-cultural committee. Within these roles I have to help co-ordinate, the

"international evening with the mayor" which is an evening of music, dance,

history and drama from around the world, as well as putting on different events

on throughout the year. In the music committee, I am the sixth-form assistant,

in which I help co-ordinate junior orchestra. I also play the flute so I also

perform in a number of concerts and soirees such as, the Christmas concert and

the joint concert with the John Fisher Choir, which is also performed at

Fairfield Halls. I find these roles to be extremely rewarding as they develop my

teamwork and interpersonal skills as well as demonstrating my ability to handle

responsibility. Outside of college I like to keep fit by cycling everyday after

college. I also belong to a youth group in which we do various exciting

activities such as bowling and going on camping weekends.

Some people dream of worthy accomplishments, whilst others stay awake and

achieve them. “You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never

were; and I say 'Why not?'” George Bernard Shaw. It is with this determination

to succeed and a keen interest in the subject that I approach this degree.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

It’s all about the headline. It’s about getting your point across in the

most direct way you can. These personal statements are very good example of

this, in just a few lines I have to get my message of why I want do a degree in

Journalism across to my prospective universities. That is one of the reasons why

I love to write, the challenge of putting over a complex thought or concept to a

large audience of people and convey it in such a way everybody will understand

it. As the great writer Hemingway once said, “My aim is to put down on paper

what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.”

My own personal experience of journalism started young, my dad used to

write for a magazine and take me with him when he went to interview people,

since then I have been fascinated with the industry. When I was 14 I was lucky

enough to get a work experience placement at “News International” in Wapping. I

got to work on the websites of “FiredUp.com”, “Revolver.com” and “Page3.com” as

well as have a tour of the offices of “The Sun”, “News Of The World” and “The

Times”, I have also recently been offered a day’s work experience at my local

paper and I am currently waiting for news of work experience at the BBC.

I pride myself on being well organised and thorough in my research. I have

also developed many skills such as interview techniques and being able to see

things from another perspective, a skill I have acquired through Sociology and

Communication Studies, analytical skills through Film Studies and Media Studies

and I have learnt about analysing and collating numerical data and factual

evidence in Psychology. Although I have already completed three A-Levels and two

AS Levels, I have taken a year out to study AS French, Sociology and Spanish. I

did this in order to improve my grades and to give me a wider choice of

qualifications as my previous subjects are all very similar with their syllabus

as well the fact multiple languages would be an invaluable advantage to have

when working in the area of communication.

Some of my outside interests are music, politics, the Internet and reading.

Music in particular is a great love of mine, I regularly attend “gigs” and

concerts and have been an active member of the “Sum 41 Street Team” for over a

year, this involves spreading publicity through flyers and posters to promote

the band, I find it very fulfilling and enjoyable. Another one of my interests

is the Internet, I contribute articles to a site dealing with issues such as

“top-up fees” and other important student matters, which I enjoy greatly and is

helping to improve my knowledge of university for the future. I have a part time

job waitressing at a local hotel which I do a few nights a week. It gives me a

sense of my own independence and responsibility, I also help my mother at the

local Red Cross during half terms and holidays cooking for the elderly and have

also recently volunteered to sell Poppies for Remembrance Sunday throughout my

town. Another activity of mine is being my tutor group representative for our

college’s student council and regularly attend meetings to deal with concerns of

the student body.

I am thoughtful, organised and handle pressure well, I love to write and it

is my ambition to do so, I believe I can bring many things to the courses I have

selected and in turn can get a lot out of them as well.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My first impression on computers as a machine has always impressed me. And

I have been motivated to know more about computing which eventually lead me to a

new passion. Since computers are broad my passions lead me specifically to

networking and how data is transferred over the net. At college I had the chance

to understand how it all works and fortunately I did but it also gave me craving

for more which took me to the internet for research but was not enough.

In the last two years I have worked as an assistant in an internet shop

helping and fixing their problems gave me much needed experience to help in my

future career. I have to admit going to study for my passion in university has

been a dream in a distance while I was in Kenya, but since I came to UK that

dream got a little bit nearer. Although I didn’t have the funds to take me to

university while I was in Kenya I was saving bit by bit to take me there.

While I was in secondary school and college I have always been hard working

and have always been the top 5 students in class which means with the right

equipments and teaching materials it won’t be hard for me at all.

My main aim of studying is to be more knowledgeable in software, hardware

and networks and eventually work my way up the ladder to see me through to

postgraduate which definitely means I am more respectable and more marketable.

After successfully joining university what will drive me is my passion and that

my family will look forward to having their son getting the opportunity to be

what he wants to be. According to me there is no room for failure and my

destination is getting a PhD which is going to make a role model for my future

children and my siblings.

To make me blend in with the new hard task I have prepared to make a

timetable to effectively manage my time since am a fun of sports namely going to

the gym to help me train my brain and my body as well.

I am looking forward with to the challenges that studying in a university

for a degree in computer network will bring.

Dear _,

“Get out of here and never come back!” Forcefully pushed out of the pub, I

sat down against a nearby wall to scrub the dust off my shoes and regain my

composure. My pride was wounded, not because of the way they treated me, but

because they did not believe what I told them. It was the second time I had been

forced out of this particular pub, a place for gay gathering. This is part of my

research project “Health education model of preventing HIV/AIDS based on

employer-employee relationships”, which I was working on. I believed that in

order to effectively prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, employers, who are on the

top of business pyramid, should be first in line to know the disease well,

because they can leverage the sufficient resources necessary to exert great

influence on the disease prevention within their enterprises. This approach fits

the circumstances in China particularly well.

In face of this frustration, I didn’t give up trying. Before the start of

the project, the local center for disease control and prevention had already

counted the fifth reported case of AIDS virus infection, who later acknowledged

that he had once provided sex service in that club or dated his homosexual

partner. The devastating consequences if no intervention would be taken obliged

me to try other means. Working as a team, three friends joined my endeavor and

we handed out brochures outside the pub that introduced HIV/AIDS preventive

measures with the elaborately-designed slogan “We understand you by showing our

care to you!” Eventually, our persistence had been well paid off. Our respect of

their personal choice melted the toughness of the owner of the club and he

agreed to give a hand in sending the information to his employees and

clients.

My name is Yuan, Chen. I grew up in a Nanjing family, where my mother is a

senior experimentalist at the Key Lab of Reproductive Medicine of Jiangsu

Province. Because of her profession, our daily communication inevitably touched

on health-related issues like health care, disease control and prevention. She

showed me the importance of public health and its impact on all aspects of human

well-being. I was so intrigued by what my mother had devoted her life to that I

made up my mind to follow her footprint. My aspirations eventually led me to the

School of Public Health at Nanjing Medical University.

During my years of college study, I was recognized for my academic

performance and awarded with scholarships multiple times. Driven by curiosity

and a desire to enrich myself, I have come out top in my undergraduate class for

four straight years. Absolutely, college study is not only a matter of getting

perfect scores in the class, as I understand. Since my sophomore year, I began

to work on research projects at the Key Lab of Modern Toxicology of Ministry of

Education, which consists mainly of graduate students. I detected the effects of

pyrethroids (permethrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate) and their major metabolite

3-phenoxybenzoic acid on rat sperm motility in vitro with a computer-assisted

sperm analysis (CASA) system and then published two papers in English. The

research work proved to be especially rewarding. It provided an opportunity for

me to apply what I had learned in the classroom so that I gained a deeper

understanding of it. But it also armed me with strong computer skills and

laboratory techniques.

The direct impact of public health on our society makes it not only an

academic subject, but also a social issue. Instilling a healthy life style

concept in the community through promotion of healthy habits is as important as

conducting research. Upon this comprehension, I took part in the Red Ribbon Peer

Association of my university, an organization which aims to bring HIV/AIDS peer

education to the public, and to help find treatment for those in need.

AIDS is a very sensitive topic that people are very reluctant to publicly

discuss in China, due to the innate conservatism of Chinese culture. Government

also avoids talking about it by blaming lack of information. Gradually, the

disease has become a forbidden zone full of controversy and misunderstanding in

the public eye. People have either not heard about it, or just do not know what

to do with it. Some are so scared of it that they do not want to have any

physical contact with infected people. Even in the health care industry, many

people do not have sufficient knowledge of it, according to our surveys.

However, in sharp contrast to the public’s ignorance are the brutal facts that

we can no longer turn a blind eye. It is estimated that in China, there are

740,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, and the number is still climbing rapidly

year by year. Each year, nearly half of the new reported cases are under

twenty-five.

As a group highlighting this sensitive issue in the face of people’s

traditional views, we met with much doubts, disbelief and resistance. Many

people openly mocked and shunned us. “AIDS is a western disease. How can it

appear here?” “I do not want to talk to AIDS patients because I do not want to

be infected.” “How is it possible for AIDS to be transmitted between man and

man?” “AIDS is an immoral disease, and as long as I do not have sex with people

who are immoral, I will be safe.” Faced with such benightedness, we used real

stories, persuasive data, and vivid pictures with scientific relevance to help

our “students” understand the disease, and we encouraged those concerned with

the issue to join our organization. Gradually, people started paying attention

and we gained some credibility within some special groups. For one of our

events, “Tell the truth”, we invited AIDS experts, patients, and health

officials on the same stage, discussing the issue face to face with the pubic.

This event gained so much attention after some high profile media reported it

that inquiries about our project flooded our mail boxes from all over the

country. During this windfall, we received funding support from businesses and

government, helping raise our project to a new level. Subsequently, we spent our

school breaks and vacations in holding exhibitions, hosting seminars, visiting

communities, and conducting surveys.

Undoubtedly, fighting against HIV/AIDS is an arduous task and the road is

long due to the traits of the virus—its variability and immune suppression. But

then, “even a journey of ten thousand miles is started with your first step”, as

an old Chinese saying goes, and I volunteer to become even an inch of what

builds up this first step. In recent years, China has made some progress on

HIV/AIDS prevention and control, but a lack of advanced concepts and expertise

poses a bottleneck problem to major breakthroughs. This is the reason why I turn

to developed countries like the United States. I am eager to receive systemic

and more advanced training in epidemiology in USA and aspire to future

leadership in public health in China. This has led my decision to apply for the

Epidemiology M.P.H. program in the School of Public Health at the University of

Michigan. Holding the belief that one’s ability is not limited by what he

already knows but what he is willing to learn and do, I am ready to become more

than just a professional in the field of public health, but in fact a

professional leader.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

Dear _,

From a very early age I remember pondering questions that were, to me,

seemingly unanswerable: what existed before the Big Bang? Why is a paperclip

attracted to a magnet? Now that I am older and have a wider knowledge of current

physics, I can contemplate other, more involved questions. How is it possible

that a cat can be alive and dead at the same time? What exactly is holding an

atom together? I am fascinated by these ideas and am hungry to learn the

theories needed to attempt to explain them. I welcome the prospect of spending

time and effort working with the scientific community to achieve a wider

appreciation of the world we live in and trying to attain a level of

understanding as high as is possible in a single lifetime.

My main interest within physics lies in quantum mechanics. About two years

ago I was shown a video on the Internet by an astounded friend that explained

the results of Young’s double slit experiment (using electrons) in relatively

simple terms. I was stunned to see that a single electron can pass through two

slits at once, but as soon as its path is observed it ‘decides’ to act in a

completely different manner! My ignorance of the topic created a desire for me

to learn more about this astonishing idea and so I read ‘Quantum: A Guide for

the Perplexed’ by Jim Al-Khallili. From this brilliant book I learnt about the

way in which the electron transforms into a probability wave or “wavefunction”

and interferes with itself after diffracting out of the slits. The book then

introduced me to complex applications of this experiment and, along with various

magazine and Internet articles, I clarified for myself intricate ideas such as

Schrodinger’s cat and quantum entanglement. I also read ‘The Trouble with

Physics’ by Lee Smolin in which he describes previous attempts at unification of

various ideas in physics, such as the successful unification of electricity and

magnetism, or the unsuccessful unification of light and sound. He then goes on

to explain one of the current attempts at the unification of all known forces

and particles – string theory. I feel that reading on these topics has prepared

me well for undergraduate physics and I am excited at the prospect of studying

at a higher level.

To familiarise myself with how physics can be used practically, I requested

a visit to the Quantum Optics and Laser Science Research Group at Imperial

College London. I assisted a PhD student and his supervisor every day for three

weeks in their ion-trapping project that aimed to shed light on quantum

computing. My main job was to build a circuit to power an electron beam. The

beam was used to form ions from calcium atoms, as ions are more easily

manipulated. However, the circuit had to be built in such a way that it would

automatically adjust the intensity of the beam to form just the right number of

ions.

In my spare time, I am generally found playing the drum kit. After passing

Grade 8 with distinction I have taken up teaching and play in four different

music groups: a concert band, a jazz group, a brass band and my own funk fusion

band. I enjoy performing in and around London and annually touring European

countries with the school concert band. To keep fit I play football and table

tennis with friends. Competitively, I have represented my school on a number of

occasions in football, rugby and athletics competitions.

Studying all three sciences and maths at A-level has given me the

opportunity to explore a wide range of different theories, techniques and

problems and has provided me with a broad scientific training base from which I

wish to develop further. All of these subjects pose exciting challenges, but my

main passion is for physics. I very much look forward to immersing myself in the

subject in future years whilst enjoying other challenges of university life.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen
