she kindled a third match. again shot up the flame; and now she was sitting

under a most beautiful christmas tree ,far larger, and far more prettily decked

out, than the one she had seen last christmas eve through the glass doors of the

rich merchant's house. hundreds of wax-tapers lighted up the green branches, and

tiny painted figures, such as she had seen in the shop-windows, looked down from

the tree upon her. the child stretched out her hands towards them in delight,

and in that moment the lights of the match warm quenched; still, however, the

christmas candles burned higher and higher, she beheld them beaming like stars

in heaven; one of them fell, the lights streaming behind it like a long, fiery

tail.

“now some one is dying,” said the little girl, softly, for she had been

told by her old grandmother, the only person who had ever been kind to her, and

who was now dead that whenever a star falls an immortal spirit returns to the

god who gave it.

she struck yet another match against the wall; it flamed up, and surrounded

by its light, appeared before her that same dear grandmother, gentle and loving

as always, but bright and happy as she had never looked during her lifetime.

At present, a wide vareity of credit cards issued by major banks and shopping malls are thriving in colleges and universities acrothe nation, with a multitude of college students ma-ki-ng up a growing population of card holders. Indeed, one out of five students is estimated to be in possession of at least one credit card, and the figure is expected to be on the steady increse, the latest data published by Yangtze Evening Post suggests。

Like anything prior to the emergence of this small piece of plastic, the increasing popularity of credit card on campus has both bright and dark sides. On the one hand, young adults in college, free from the trouble of pocketing a considerable sum of cash, could enjoy the convenience of credit cards and purchase expensive goods by installments.

On the other hand, however, the irresponsible and excessive use of the cards by these youngsters, the majority of whom are fresh out of middle school incapable of budgeting their money, can make them heavily in debt which will take them years to pay off。

On my personal level, while enjoying a host of conveniences the credit card may bring, we couldn‘t afford to ignore a conspicious fact: in most cases, parents are our sole financial sources.Instead of spending without any restrict, we are supposed to put studies on the top of our agenda and move ourselves beyond heavy dependence upon our parents。

Two travelling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family。 The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guestroom。 Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement。 As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it。 When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, "Things aren't always what they seem。 " The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife。 After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest。 When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears。 Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field。 The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused。 The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die。 "Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied。 "When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall。 Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it。 " "Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife。 I gave him the cow instead。 Things aren't always what they seem。" Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don't turn out the way they should。 If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage。 You might not know it until some time later。 。。

A Brother Like That

A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a

Christmas present。 On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street

urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it。

"Is this your car, Mister?" he said。

Paul nodded。 "My brother gave it to me for Christmas。" The boy was

astounded。 "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing?

Boy, I wish 。 。 。" He hesitated。

Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for。 He was going to wish he

had a brother like that。 But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to

his heels。

"I wish," the boy went on, "That I could be a brother

like that。"

Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would

you like to take a ride in my car?"

"Oh yes, Id love that。"

After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, said, "Mister,

would you mind driving in front of my house?"

Paul smiled a little。 He thought he knew what the lad wanted。 He wanted to

show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile。 But Paul was

wrong again。 "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked。

He ran up the steps。 Then in a little while Paul heard him ing back, but he

was not ing fast。 He was carrying his little crippled brother。 He sat him down

on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the

car。

"There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs。 His brother gave it to

him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent。 And some day Im gonna give you

one just like it 。 。 。 then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in

the Christmas windows that Ive been trying to tell you about。"

Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car。 The

shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a

memorable holiday ride。 That Christmas Eve, Paul learned what Jesus meant when

he said: "It is more blessed to give 。 。 。 "

Im glad to be here to share with you my definition of success.

when we mentioned the success, the usual worldly criteria are wealth, fame,

high social status and something other like that. in reality, we can’t deny t

these things in some way. but personally, i believe that succeis the realization

of people’ hopes and wishes. and to live with a high ideal is a successful life.

it is not what one does, but what one tries to do, that make a man strong. so i

believe that succeis ninety-nine percent mental attitude, it calls for lots of

positive quality: effort, love, diligence, efficiency and so on. i think the

successful life always have these characters. if a person inherits his family’s

millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person in material

terms, it just can be said that he has the smooth way of life, he is lucky in

some way, but that is not the succe.unceasing effort is the price of success. no

matter what is the result, we always can get more from the process. what we

should do is that insisting on our goals or dreams and always encourage.

ourselves to challenge more, to hold the opportunities, never give up. it

sounds like si-mp-le, but it is really hard to do. also the key points of the

success.

relatively speaking, in our daily life, succewould be rather si-mp-le. for

me, i’m standing here to take part in the speech competition is somehow also

success. as i’m a easy to suffer from stage fright, i choose to hold this

chance, my goal is my own character training——to be more confident, to have more

courage to front such situation, i really do it, i have truly gained by

participating, i’m success.

what is success? i’m sure that everyone has his own interpretation as i do.

in the inspiring words of philips brooks:“ do not pray for tasks equal to your

powers ,pray for powers equal to your tasks, then the doing of your work shall

be no miracle, but you shall be the miracle.” so believe in our hopes ,believe

in ourselves. every one can create the success.

thank you!

She kindled a third match。 Again shot up the flame; and now she was sitting under a most beautiful Christmas tree ,far larger, and far more prettily decked out, than the one she had seen last Christmas eve through the glass doors of the rich merchant's house。 Hundreds of wax-tapers lighted up the green branches, and tiny painted figures, such as she had seen in the shop-windows, looked down from the tree upon her。 The child stretched out her hands towards them in delight, and in that moment the lights of the match warm quenched; still, however, the Christmas candles burned higher and higher, she beheld them beaming like stars in heaven; one of them fell, the lights streaming behind it like a long, fiery tail。

“Now some one is dying,” said the little girl, softly, for she had been told by her old grandmother, the only person who had ever been kind to her, and who was now dead that whenever a star falls an immortal spirit returns to the God who gave it。

She struck yet another match against the wall; it flamed up, and surrounded by its light, appeared before her that same dear grandmother, gentle and loving as always, but bright and happy as she had never looked during her lifetime。

a dream from beyond

i was sound asleep. my grandfather appeared in a dream. he asked why i had never visited him and grandma at the cemetery. he said that even my mom hadn’t visited since october 4 (grandma’s birthday). he told me that, when i was young, i had walked out into a pond and slipped under water. he had rescued me. he said grandma was supposed to be watching me, but that she had gotten sick all of a sudden and was throwing up. it was probably the fresh blackberries they had picked and eaten earlier. grandma had a bad stomach.

my parents were out on a boat in the pond. they did not know that grandpa had saved me until they got back to shore. i was in a towel and my clothes were drying on bushes. my brown and white buster brown shoes were also soaked. i was only three years old, grandpa said. my parents were angry at first, but when they saw that grandma was still feeling sick, they forgave her.

grandpa told me that we had a picnic after that. the four of us ate some chicken, potato salad, and homemade cookies. we drank lemonade. then grandpa took me for a walk in the woods (i sat on his shoulders). i saw some daisies, and we picked them. when we returned, i presented three daisies to mom and three to grandma, who was finally feeling better. grandpa said to bring some daisies to the gravesite. then i woke up.

the next day, i called my mom. “do you remember me walking into the pond and grandpa rescuing me?”

“my god! who told you about that?”

“you mean, it really happened?”

“yes, but your father and i never told you about it because grandma swore us to silence. even though it wasn’t her fault, she felt that she had failed in her responsibility, and never wanted you to know about it. my goodness, that was so long ago. who told you this?”

“mom, did i go for a walk with grandpa and return with daisies for you and grandma?”

“okay, i get it. you and your dad are playing some kind of prank. okay, it’s very funny. now, quit it.”

“this is no prank, mom. grandpa told me this in a dream last night.”

“it still sounds like a prank.”

“no, i’m serious. he told me that grandma had a reaction to blackberries. he said i was wearing brown and white buster brown shoes. he said i gave you and grandma daisies.”

“oh, my god. your father would never remember all this. it must be daddy! did he say anything about visiting his gravesite?”

“yes, that was his problem. he wanted me to visit them. he also said you had not visited since—”

“—since mom’s birthday six years ago?”

“well, not—”

“i’ve got to get over there right now!”

“wait for me! i’m coming with you, and i’ve got to bring those daisies. maybe we’d better start going every year, huh, mom?”

“yes. there’s no telling what grandpa might tell you next time.”
