A Brother Like That

A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a

Christmas present。 On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street

urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it。

"Is this your car, Mister?" he said。

Paul nodded。 "My brother gave it to me for Christmas。" The boy was

astounded。 "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing?

Boy, I wish 。 。 。" He hesitated。

Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for。 He was going to wish he

had a brother like that。 But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to

his heels。

"I wish," the boy went on, "That I could be a brother

like that。"

Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would

you like to take a ride in my car?"

"Oh yes, Id love that。"

After a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, said, "Mister,

would you mind driving in front of my house?"

Paul smiled a little。 He thought he knew what the lad wanted。 He wanted to

show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile。 But Paul was

wrong again。 "Will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked。

He ran up the steps。 Then in a little while Paul heard him ing back, but he

was not ing fast。 He was carrying his little crippled brother。 He sat him down

on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the

car。

"There she is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs。 His brother gave it to

him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent。 And some day Im gonna give you

one just like it 。 。 。 then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in

the Christmas windows that Ive been trying to tell you about。"

Paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car。 The

shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a

memorable holiday ride。 That Christmas Eve, Paul learned what Jesus meant when

he said: "It is more blessed to give 。 。 。 "

A broken mirror joined together

During the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589), there lived a beautiful, intelligent princess name Lechang in the State Chen. She and her husband Xu Deyan loved each other dearly. But before long their country was in danger of being invaded by the troops of the Sui Dynasty. Princess Lechang and Xu Deyan had a premonition that their county would be occupied by the invaders and they would have to leave the palace and go into exile. During the chaos they might lose touch with each other. They broke a bronze mirror, a symbol of the unity of husband and wife into two parts and each of them kept a half. They aGREed that each would take their half of the mirror to the fair during the Lantern Festival, which is on the 15th day of the first Lunar month, in the hope that would meet again. When they were united the two halves would join together. Soon their premonition came true. During the chaos of war, the princess lost touch with her husband was taken to a powerful minister Yang Su's house and was made his mistress.

At the Lantern Festival the next year, Xu Deyan took his half of the mirror to the fair. He hoped that he could meet his wife. It so happened that a servant was selling the other half of the bronze mirror. Xu Deyan recognized it immediately. He asked the servant about his wife. As he heard about her bitter experience, tears rolled down his cheeks. Xu Deyan wrote a poem on the half of the mirror kept by his wife: "You left me with your broken mirror Now the mirror is back but not you I can no longer see your reflection in the mirror Only the bright moon but not you" .

the servant brought back the inscribed half of the mirror to princess Lechang. For days, she could not help sobbing because she knew her husband was still alive and that he missed her but they could not meet forever.

the minister, Yang Su, found this out. He was also moved by their true love and realized it was impossible to get Lechang's love. So he sent for Xu Deyan and allowed the husband and wife to reunite.

From that story comes the idiom "A broken mirror joined together".

It is used to suggest the happy reunion of a separated couple.

What a wonderful fruit the banana is, popular all over the world. Its three colors tell you how ripe it is. Green means go, as in go find another banana. Yellow means eat me. Brown means eat me but don’t bother chewing before you swallow. The only thing that would make a banana more user-friendly is if you could eat the peel. Plus, a banana is neat to eat. When you bite into it, you don’t have to worry about juice squirting all over yourself and your dinner neighbors . And it’s a silent food—you can chew it all you like without driving your neighbors crazy with crunching sounds . Finally, it’s easy to cut—you don’t need a steak knife. You can slice it with a fork or a spoon, if you like.

You’re never too young or too old to eat bananas. Babies eat mashed bananas before their teeth grow in. Great-great-grandparents eat mashed bananas after their teeth fall out.

The banana is versatile. You can fry it, bake it, mash it, or eat it raw. You can slice it and put it on your breakfast cereal. At lunchtime you can snack on a raw banana, or make a peanut butter and banana sandwich, or eat a bag of dried bananas. You can add a banana to your ice cream for dessert and call it a banana split. You can order a healthful banana smoothie at your local smoothie store. On weekends you can order a banana daiquiri at your local bar or restaurant.

Here in the US, we get most of our bananas from Ecuador and Costa Rica, although the fruit reportedly originated in Asia. Bananas give us lots of potassium and vitamins A and C, and hardly any sodium. The price of bananas hasn’t changed much over recent years—they’re still about 65 cents a pound, despite rising gas and labor prices. If that’s too expensive, you can still get three pounds for a buck at many dollar stores.

Mother Nature is an exquisite and complex life-system. Its charm appears in

the trees, stream, soil, insects, moss and fungus, all the things on the earth

in different shapes, which are interdependent. When you get close to nature,

please remember, each tree, stone and species of animals here has lived

harmoniously for hundreds, thousands or even millions of years. When we pass

away, they will continue to live. They are the real masters, while we are just

the passer-by. However, the conduct we unconsciously do, such as picking,

lumbering, tramping and abusing can probably destroy the balance of their life.

Therefore, we must reduce our bad influence as much as possible. While you are

enjoying the nature, do not forget please, the beauty of the lives also needs to

be concerned with and to be protected.

Each life on the earth has a long and touching evolutionary story. From the

origin, the lives of the human being are equal to those of others; they both are

the composing parts of Mother Nature. Nevertheless, for some inexplicable

reasons, the human becomes the spirits of all creatures. Of course, it is the

result of the evolution, but still we should be grateful to all our companions

in nature for the opportunity they offer.

In spite of this, humans cannot live without earth. They live on the earth,

drink the sweet water, and enjoy the sunshine, the air, the sky, the fruit; the

grains utilize the energy and so on. In a word, the human being cannot live

without nature, and Mother Nature makes us grow stronger.

I do not like the word "Pet", but preferring the word "Animal" instead. I

have been loving animal since I was just a little boy. When thinking of the "Pet

Fashion", I always feel much annoyed. For the animals will be given a shackle

and lose their liberty if they become someones pets. Their natural attribution

can be deprived, too.

Up to now, relying on their scientific power, the human have opened up too

much and over developed nature, in order to fill up their growing appetites of

wealth. They destroy the balance of nature, however, they dont realize, their

own development and existence will be threatened. Therefore, our sights should

be focused on nature and we should try to develop the concept of "keeping human

and nature in unity".

We should lay emphasis on our education with consider cultural and natural

emotion. To use the vivid example to wake up the conscience in peoples

hearts.

To love nature is to love our mankind. As the new generation who enter the

new century, we should make efforts to love and respect nature, to treat it well

and protect it. At last, we have the night to enjoy it.

At last one day the wolf came indeed .The boy cried out in earnest. But his neighbors, supposing him to be at his old sport, paid no heed to his cries, and the wolf devoured the sheep.

my brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sisters bureau and lifted out a tissue-wrapped package.

this, he said, is not a slip.

this is lingerie.

he discarded the tissue and handed me the slip.

it was exquisite, silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb of lace.

the price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached.

jan bought this the first time we went to new york, at least 8 or 9 years ago.

she never wore it.

she was saving it for a special occasion.

well, i guess this is the occasion.

he took the slip from me and put it on the bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician.

his hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the drawer shut and turned to me, dont ever save anything for a special occasion.

every day you re alive is a special occasion.

i remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when i helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores that follow an unexpected death.

i thought about them on the plane returning to california from the midwestern town where my sisters family lives.

i thought about all the things that she hadnt seen or heard or done.

i thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special.

im still thinking about his words, and theyve changed the weeds in the garden.

im spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings.

whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savour, not endure.

im trying to recognize these moment now and cherish them.

im not saving anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special.

event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia blossom… i wear my good blazer to the market if i feel like it.

my theory is if i look prosperous, i can shell out $28.

im not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party going friends.

someday and one of these days are losing their grip on my vocabulary.

im not sure what my sister wouldve done had she know that she wouldnt be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted.

The Rabbit and The Wolf’

One day a rabbit was walking near the hill. He heard someone crying,‘Help! Help!’It was a wolf. A big stone was on the wolfs back. He cried, "Mr. Rabbit, take this big stone from my back, or I will die."

The Rabbit moved the stone from the wolfs back. Then the wolf jumped and caught the rabbit.

“If you kill me, I will never help you again.” Cried the rabbit . “Ha,ha!You will not live, because I will kill you." said the wolf.

‘I helped you. How can you kill me? It’s unfair. You ask Mrs. Duck. She will say that you are wrong." said the rabbit. “I will ask her,” said the wolf.

So they went to ask Mrs. Duck. The duck listened to their story and said,” What stone? I must see it. Then I can know who is right. “So the wolf and the rabbit and the duck went to see the stone.

"Now, put the stone back," said Mrs. Duck. So they put the stone back. Now the big stone is on the wolf’s back again.

That’s all for my story. Thanks for listening.

thank you for opening up your minds and your hearts, for seeing the possibility of what we could do together for our children and for our future here in this state and in our nation. i am profoundly grateful to all of you for giving me the chance to serve you.

i will - i will do everything i can to be worthy of your faith and trust and to honor the powerful example of senator daniel patrick moynihan. i would like all of you and the countless new yorkers and americans watching to join me in honoring him for his incredible half century of service to new york and our nation. senator moynihan, on behalf of new york and america, thank you.

i promise you tonight that i will reach across party lines to bring progress for all of new york's families. today we voted as democrats and republicans. tomorrow we begin again as new yorkers.

and how fortunate we are indeed to live in the most diverse, dynamic and beautiful state in the entire union. you know, from the south bronx to the southern tier, from brooklyn to buffalo, from montauk to massena, from the world's tallest skyscrapers to breathtaking mountain ranges, i've met people whose faces and stories i will never forget. thousands of new yorkers from all 62 counties welcomed to me into your schools, your local diners, your factory floors, your living rooms and front porches. you taught me, you tested me and you shared with me your challenges and concerns - about overcrowded or crumbling schools, about the struggle to care for growing children and aging parents, about the continuing challenge of providing equal opportunity for all and about children moving away from their home towns because good jobs are so hard to find in upstate new york. now i've worked on issues like these for a long time, some of them for 30 years, and i am determined to make a difference for all of you.

you see, i believe our nation owes every responsible citizen and every responsible family the tools that they need to make the most of their own lives. that's the basic bargain. i'll do my best to honor in the united states senate.

and to those of you who did not support me, i want you to know that i will work in the senate for you and for all new yorkers. and to those of you who worked so hard and never lost faith even in the toughest times, i offer you my undying gratitude.

One day, some animals were talking about which animal was the best. The pig said, "Pigs are the greatest because we have many babies. I have twelve healthy little pigs." She asked the rabbit, "How many babies do you have?"

The rabbit felt embarrassed. She only had seven. Then she pointed at the sheep and said, "She only has three!" Everyone laughed.

A snake passed by and said, "Snakes are truly the greatest. I have fifty!"

"So what?" said a new voice. Everyone turned around and saw a lioness.

The snake lifted up her head and looked at the lioness."Why do you speak? I have fifty babies. You only have one. That's nothing." The other animals said that the snake was right.

The lioness laughed. "I only have one, but it is a lion. Only a lion can be the king of the forest."

The other animals could think of nothing to say. They had many babies, but none of them would ever be as strong as a lion. "One valuable thing," said the lioness, "is worth more than a hundred common ones."

When George was thirty-five, he bought a small plane and learned to fly it. He soon became very good and made his plane do all kinds of tricks.

George had a friend. His name was Mark. One day George offered to take Mark up in his plane. Mark thought, "I've travelled in a big plane several times, but I've never been in a small one, so I'll go."

They went up, and George flew around for half an hour and did all kinds of tricks in the air.

When they came down again, Mark was very glad to be back safely, and he said to his friend in a shaking voice, "Well, George, thank you very much for those two trips in your plane."

George was very surprised and said, "Two trips?"

"Yes, my first and my last," answered Mark.
