Dear _,

As Confucius said: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work

a day in your life.” This quote made me realise the importance of choosing the

right profession and what impact this choice would have on my life.

I developed an interest in the field of accounting through my exposure to

it at school. We have analysed and interpreted financial statements of various

companies like: Cashbuild and Enron. This has given me the opportunity to

explore the basics of bookkeeping and to see how organisations function, within

the corporate world. What is fascinating about accounting as a profession is

that it is multi-faceted and one can easily move into fields linked to it

namely: banking, taxation, insurance and auditing. It is also very interesting

how one cannot only use accounting rules to control and drive systems within an

organisation but also to steer companies out of an economic crisis. Therefore, I

look forward to being part of this dynamic field of study and ensuring that the

company I work for in the future is on the correct path towards financial

stability and security.

I have participated in various accounting workshops and I have work

experience in accounting firms like PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Grant Thornton.

These two accounting firms are very different as PwC works with big companies,

while Grant Thornton works with smaller organisations. Working in these two

environments gave me the opportunity to realise what auditing is all about and

what the profession entails as well as what is expected of me as a member of the

profession. My exposure to that has also given me the opportunity to strengthen

my public speaking and communication skills.

I moved to South Africa, from Greece, 5 years ago, which was a big change

for me, not only culturally but also on a personal level. However, I adapted

quickly to the new environment and got used to the new way of life. South Africa

is a country with a variety of races and through my attendance at a

multi-cultural school, I have learned to be open-minded and interact

successfully with people of all races and cultures. I am an optimistic,

passionate and hard working person, and this has always motivated me to always

finish what I start, regardless of what happens. One of my strengths is my

determination to succeed and I am very task-orientated. I pride myself on my

organisational skills and am confident that my choice of study, on a tertiary

level, is well-suited to my strengths.

I was awarded Honours in my school and I helped in my school’s library as

well as the organisation of the school’s Dance Show. In addition, I have

obtained the B1 Delf Exam in French. Outside of academic pursuits, I have played

the piano since the age of 7. I have passed various exams including Grade 7

Royal School Piano Exam and the Grade 6 Royal School Theory Exam. I have

participated in Concerto Festivals where I performed with the accompaniment of

the University of Pretoria Orchestra. In addition, I have joined an organisation

called “Hand in Hand” which organises outings to orphanages, shelter homes and

hospitals. I thoroughly enjoy assisting members of the community that are less

fortunate than myself and have a passion for children, helping them in areas

where there is a need. I am computer literate (Microsoft – all programmes) and I

also enjoy horse riding and playing tennis with friends as these activities help

me relax, especially during the exam period.

I have chosen to study in the UK for the following three reasons. Firstly,

in my opinion, the UK has the best universities in the world and being accepted

in one of these universities will help me realise my dream of becoming an

Accountant. Secondly, studying in UK will open many doors in my career and I

will be able to work there and therefore gain valuable experience. The third

reason is that I love meeting new people and discovering new things, hence I

believe that studying in UK will make me a more open-minded and motivated

individual.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My interest in economics, business, finance and banking has been long

standing as I am interested in how important decisions within these fields have

everyday affects. I feel I have a sound and enthusiastic response to this

aspect. I am currently studying Economics at 'A' level, in which I have learnt

in theory and through demand and supply analysis, how the economy works. This

has encouraged me to use these theories in practical application. Sociology has

sharpened my ability to analyse information in depth, as well as my

interpersonal skills, both of which are vital for management. Sociology has also

helped me appreciate people's differing needs, which I see as an important

feature of business. The content of the courses I have studied at 'A' level such

as Mathematics, I feel, complement my choice of degree.

As part of a Work Experience programme, I have been fortunate to have the

opportunity of shadowing the Finance Director of a growing fashion company and

was given a virtual tour on the financial aspects of the company. I attended

seminars and Board meetings and gained insight into decision making. I also

helped to organise an exhibition at Earl's Court. I also attended a placement at

the Head Office of Norwood Ravenswood, a large Charitable Trust. My time had

been divided between various departments from Fund Raising to Finance

Active participation in extra-curricular activities has taken up further

time. I helped to organise and promote various events at some of London's most

regarded venues, which involved raising capital through investment and planning

advertisement strategies. Through this I was able to acquaint with a range of

different people. I find great satisfaction in helping others that has led me to

contribute to many charity events, as well as working at The Cancer Research

Campaign charity shop on a voluntary basis.

I have also travelled to many countries, including America, India and

Kenya, which has broadened my knowledge and awareness of other cultures. I have

a strong passion for music. Furthermore, the presentation of a radio show gave

me a chance to interact with the whole of London, which enhanced my

communication skills. In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit and much of my spare

time is spent at the gym. I also enjoy playing football and play on a regular

basis for a 5-a-side team.

(Personal Information)

(Housing Contract)

(Housing)

(Meal Plan)

(Profile)

(Roommate)

(Housing Deposit)

in this essay i outline my academic and extra-curricular accomplishments. also discussed are my career objectives and the motivation to pursue the graduate program in civil engineering at the university of massachusetts, amherst.

the undergraduate curriculum in chemical engineering at iit, kharagpur, introduced me to a wide gamut of subjects, both in and outside the field. various courses like mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and transport phenomena have provided me with a strong footing in the theoretical concepts of chemical engineering.

it was the field of environmental technology which particularly captured my interest. the desire to delve deeper into this subject persuaded me to take elective courses in industrial (air) pollution control, non-conventional energy engineering and environmental earth sciences. while offering both depth and breadth across this field, these courses put into perspective the importance and relevance of chemical engineering and the application of its fundamentals to environment related problems. i came to realize that although traditionally environmental studies has been under the domain of civil engineering, the increasing complexity and magnitude of environmental problems have resulted in a growing need for the services of disciplines other than civil engineering.

during the eight week summer training at the development consultants ltd.,i was assigned to the cement cell, where i received a detailed knowledge of the cement manufacturing processes. as an industrial intern, i was assigned a project on cement plant design (1800 tpd), which encompassed raw-mix design and capacity calculations for various equipment. here, i got aquainted with the pollution and energy conservation problems faced by the cement industry and devoted a significant portion of my project to the pollution abatement methods.

my final year dissertation was on the manufacture of phosphoric acid from rock phosphate using sulfuric acid (design of 100 tpd plant). this covered the design of reactor, extractor (for acid purification) and evaporator (for acid concentration). as a natural outcome of my interest in pollution control, adequate emphasis was provided to waste gases and waste water treatment which involved off-gas scrubbing (venturi design) and discharge method details, gypsum disposal methods, disposal of fluosilicic acid as waste material and the incorporation of all these in the plant layout/flow-sheet.

at iit, kharagpur, i have received the best possible undergraduate education in chemical engineering in india. throughout, my scholastic records and achievements have been outstanding. i have consistently ranked in the top 2% of the students of my class, in school, and consider the high point of my achievements as being ranked in the top 1% of more than one lakh students who wrote the joint entrance examination for admission to one of the six indian institutes of technology.

throughout my school and undergraduate education, i have been a keen participant in extra-curricular activities. getting elected as the school pupil leader ( head girl) helped me hone my organizational and interpersonal skills. at iit, i have been involved in the annual cultural fest as head of the control tent team. i have also taken active part in dramatics and made my contribution to the technology dramatics society (english chapter) at iit, as its member and later as the governor. i was also the member of the nss at iit where i had the opportunity to be involved in its literacy and health & nutrition programs. i continue to be a member of the helpage society of india, which provides palliative care to the terminally ill cancer patients.

the years of undergraduate education have been an enriching experience - both academically and otherwise, and i am determined to maintain the high levels of excellence throughout my career.

my immediate degree objective is an m.s in environmental engineering – a rapidly evolving field with an immense potential for research. i wish to follow it up with a ph.d, to pursue a career in research and experience the excitement and satisfaction of being at the forefront of this vast expanding field.

an extremely distinguished faculty, a milieu replete with academic activity, and a graduate program which blends high quality course work and research facilities at the cutting edge of every sub-field are the factors which have motivated me to choose the university of massachusetts, amherst for graduate studies. i believe the program offered will help me acquire the versatility needed to reach my full potential as an engineer.

it would, therefore, be a privilege to be able to secure admission to pursue graduate studies, with adequate financial assistance at the university of massachusetts, amherst. i am confident that i will match the high standards set by your university.

purpose of study & professional plans

the boundless possibility of trying out and the instant knowledge of the outcome that stimulates one for further analysis of a rationale in question, is what i find most appealing about computer science. keeping up an inquisitive and explorative attitude, i believe, leads to a constant learning process. this approach adds to the already immense potential for innovation that exists in this field.

as a student in the final year of undergraduate study for a bachelor of engineering degree in computer science & engineering, i look to graduate study to refine my knowledge and skills in my areas of interest. i believe it will also serve to give direction to my goal of a career as a research professional at an academic or commercial, research-oriented organisation. i intend to pursue an ms degree in order to reach that goal.

academic background & research interests

in my undergraduate studies, i have benefited from the breadth of shivaji university’s syllabi content that has given me a comprehensive exposure to the core areas of computer science and a strong conceptual understanding of the same. in these three and half years of study, i have strived to maintain an approach of expending independent effort in all my endeavors. learning by myself and sharing my knowledge with others has been most worthwhile, when comprehending a concept.

over the past two years, i have developed an interest in the areas of compiler construction and information retrieval. the compiler construction lab sessions last semester required the design of a compiler for c++ programs that were restricted to for loops, switch case statements and simple input and output. the work involved in this, as well as the courses, formal systems and automata and compiler construction, have lead me to appreciate the intricacies involved in this field. however, for my ms degree, i remain open to other topics as well.

for my b.e project, i have decided to concentrate on my other area of interest viz. information retrieval. i’m attempting to evolve a technique that, when employed in a search engine, will maximize the comprehensiveness and precision of the query listings. the ongoing work has introduced me to a vast body of pertinent research, such as the university of washington’s dynamic reference sifting technique for locating an inspanidual’s homepage, among others. this has served to sharpen my inclination to engage in active research within this area.

(please see attached resume’ for the academic and co-curricular distinctions)

one person’s life influences the lives of an unbelievable number of people, one of the most important lessons i learned, being the head of the apex body at senior secondary level (11th and 12th standard). hence the need of responsible actions. becoming the youngest head of the apex body ever and the only one to have served for a period of two years eventually turned out to be a confidence booster. it taught me that the basis for good work is self-reliance and very importantly, time management. not all of my entire two years were devoid of shortcomings. i learned to accept both criticism and praise with a positive frame of mind. my work involved organising various events, that brought with them the opportunity to work and interact with various kinds of people. this was a distinctively gratifying experience for me, which i feel would stand in good stead in the future, especially in lieu of any teaching experience.

in conclusion, i would like to add that the essence of university education lies in the synergetic relationship between the student and his department. i feel that graduate study at your university will be the most logical extension of my academic pursuits and a major step towards achieving my objectives. i would be grateful to you if i’m accorded the opportunity to pursue my graduate studies with financial assistance at your institution and am able to justify your faith in me.

(for a listing of all final year courses, i.e. courses not listed in transcripts please see attached resume’).

I guess it was inevitable that I’d be on hockey skates at some point in my

life, but I did not expect that I’d become one of a rare group of female ice

hockey officials before I even reached high school. Being born into a family of

hockey players and figure skaters, it seemed that my destiny had already been

decided.

Right from the beginning, my two older brothers and my father strapped me

up and threw me onto the ice. I loved it and, in my mind, I was on my way to

becoming a female Gretzky! But my mom had to think of something fast to drag her

little girl away from this sport of ruffians. Enter my first hot pink figure

skating dress! That was all it took to launch fifteen years of competitive

figure skating. Even though figure skating soon became my passion, I always had

an unsatisfied yearning for ice hockey. It took a great deal of convincing from

my parents that competitive figure skating and ice hockey didn’t mix. My

compromise became refereeing ice hockey; little did I know that I was beginning

an activity that would influence my character and who I am today. When I began,

I would only work with my dad and brothers. Everyone was friendly and accepting

because I had just started. I soon realized though that to get better I needed

to start refereeing with people I wasn’t related to, and that’s when my

experience drastically changed. An apologetic smile and an “I’m sorry” wasn’t

going to

get me through games now. As I began officiating higher-level games and

dealing with more arrogant coaches, I suddenly entered a new male-dominated

world, a world I had never experienced before. My confidence was shot, and all I

wanted to do was get through each game and be able to leave. Sometimes I was

even too scared to skate along the teams’ benches because I would get upset by

what the coaches would yell to me. “Do you have a hot date tonight, ref?” was a

ty//www.ruiwen.com/picment that coaches would spit at me during the course of a

game. In their eyes, I did not belong on that ice, and they were going to do

whatever they could do to make sure no women wanted to officiate their games. I

was determined not to let them chase me off the ice.

I made the decision to stand up for myself. I never responded rudely to the

coaches, but I did not let them walk all over me and destroy my confidence

anymore. I started to act and feel more like the 4-year certified Atlantic

District Official that I am. There were still a few situations that scared me.

One time I called a penalty in a championship game during the third overtime and

the team I penalized ended up losing because they got scored on. I knew I had

made the right call, even though I was unnerved when I saw the losing teams’

parents waiting for me at my locker room; for the moment I wished I hadn’t

called that penalty. Although it was scary at the time, I stood my ground and

overcame my fears. That was an important

stepping-stone in my officiating career and in my life.

After four years of refereeing, I still can’t say it’s easy. Every game

hands me something new and I never know what to expect. Now I have the

confidence and preparation to deal with the unexpected, on and off the ice. I

now also know to take everything with a grain of salt and not let it get to me.

I have learned that life is just like being out on the ice; if I am prepared and

act with confidence, I will be perceived as confident. These are the little

lessons that I’m grateful to have learned as a woman referee.

Things to Notice About This Essay

1. The author tells an interesting story about her experiences as a

referee.

2. A sense of her personality—determination, flexibility, good humor—comes

through in the narration.

3. Details like “Do you have a hot date tonight, ref?” make the narration

memorable (we’d love to hear more of these kinds of details).

4. The essay needs a faster start. The first paragraph (three sentences)

says the same thing in both the first and third sentences—and gives away the

essay’s surprise in the second! A good revision would all of paragraph one and

start at paragraph two.

5. There’s too much frame here and not enough picture. The essay needs

further development, especially about the difficulties of

becoming and being a ref, to keep it vivid.

6. The author should “dwell” in the meaning of the experience a little more

at the end—“I wonder about…I also think…Sometimes I believe….” Significant

experiences like this one, woven through many years of the author’s life, don’t

mean just one thing—there are more insights and lessons to explore here.

yours Sincerely

Dear _,

Since I was very young I have always been interested in accounting and

finance and how they operate. In China, my favourite TV programme is the finance

programme and I enjoy international finance. I frequently worked in my mother's

company to help the staff in the accounts department. All of these have given me

an understanding of accounting and finance

My passion for the subject expanded when I chose accounting as part of my

A-level programme. Although this subject is somewhat demanding, I find it

extremely interesting. I believe this is the right choice for me. I am confident

that a course in accounting and finance satisfies my interest. I am looking

forward to learning more of accounting in my A-level course

In my spare time I enjoy playing basketball. I play once or twice a week

with my friends. I also like to listen to music. I think that playing basketball

can help me to increase the team spirit and music can help me relax. Also while

I was working as a cleaner in Downing College at Cambridge University, I believe

that I gained invaluable experience in dealing with the boss and trying to

deliver colleague satisfaction, whilst learning to work effectively and

efficiently in a well-structured team. Hopefully I will be able to get this kind

of opportunity to work whilst at university. I enjoy my spare time and try to

use it effectively

I consider myself to be a hard working outgoing individual. I still have

some shortcomings. For example, I am a little bit disorganised sometimes. But I

have known this and I am trying to correct it. I have made a timetable to

organise my daily life. I am looking forward to the challenge of university

life, both socially and mentally. I strongly believe that my years at university

will be enjoyable and those that I will remember for the rest of my life. Most

of all I am hoping that my chosen subject will give me a strong foundation for a

successful career.

when introduced to economics in high school i realized that it interestingly qualified as a subject of both arts and science. it was an area defined by precise rules, principles and axioms and yet there was tremendous scope for self-expression in the form of interpretation and analysis. this facet of economics intrigued me very much and i decided to pursue further studies in economics.

during my masters program i equipped myself as best as i could, with various tools used in economic analysis. i obtained rigorous training in mathematics, econometrics and game theory. after completing the masters program, i joined national institute of public finance and policy, as i was very eager to see how one might use economics to tackle real life problems, where simplified models, and assuming away of problems may offer no respite. i did some very interesting work here, which is described in my resume. i want to delve deeper into the subject to be able to carry out independent research and analysis, hence my decision to join the ph.d. program at ucla.

international economics is an area i would really like to explore. i am fascinated by game theoretic modeling of issues pertaining to international economics. i believe that game theoretic models can be effectively used in international economics as many policy issues such as negotiations over mutual reductions in tariffs, formation and preservation of customs union s, establishment of cartels in the case of internationally traded goods, all have some game theoretic character.

the current "regionalism versus multilateralism" debate holds its own attraction. it should be interesting to analyze the trade spanersion effects of preferential trading agreements and also their impact on multilateral institutions like gatt. the strategic trading that takes place in foreign exchange markets and the variety of auction like mechanisms that have been used for foreign exchange trade, especially in developing countries, are intriguing.

during my graduate studies i aim to equip myself with some advanced tools and develop my analytical and research capabilities. i want to get an excellent command over econometrics to be able to confront stochastic statistical data with exact models of economic theories and also for empirical verification of other models, which might otherwise be set in a partial equilibrium framework. i expect to emerge as an economic engineer and an expert in model etrics per se, also interests me as a subject of economics and i might like to research in econometric methodology. i want to be an academic economist. i have cleared the national eligibility test conducted by the university grants commission of india, which makes me eligible to teach an undergraduate course in economics in any indian university.

i want to study at ucla, as it emphasizes on the rigor and analytical tools that are necessary for academic research. i have well-developed analytical and mathematical skills and i want to exploit these skills to the greatest extent. i feel the help and guidance that can be provided to me by the distinguished faculty of your university will be invaluable. i am sure if i am given the opportunity to study at your university that attracts some of the best students from all over the world, it will provide an environment competitive enough to bring out the best in me.

i was introduced to mathematics and the physical sciences while at school and it was in high school that i considered a career in this area. the desire to study the applied physical sciences and mathematics prompted me to take the joint entrance examination (jee) for admission to the indian institutes of technology. i was ranked in the top 0.25 % of the nearly 1,00,000 students who took the examination.

my undergraduate education at iit bombay has not only given me a certain set of skills but has also helped me understand my fields of interest and my academic strengths and weaknesses. this understanding has made me realize that though the applied physical sciences appeal to me, my strengths lie in applied mathematics and in abstractions of reality. in particular, i am interested in the managerial aspects of industrial and technological systems. this interest developed during my junior year seminar titled ‘productivity management’ in which i explored the relationship between manufacturing strategy and productivity improvement. i continued further research in this area through my senior year project titled ‘decision support system for quality control’ which sought to investigate various decision making mechanisms in the quality function and provide corresponding computer support. the project also enabled me to appreciate the interaction between manufacturing and the other functions of the firm especially information systems. the reading of certain outstanding books during the course of my research such as skinner’s ‘manufacturing in the corporate strategy’, deming’s ‘out of the crisis’ and goldratt’s ‘the goal’ finally convinced me to pursue a ph.d. in operations management and an academic career thereafter.

my past work in the area of industrial engineering and operations research was characterised by a dichotomy of approaches. the courses that i took in this area dealt with various operational and tactical issues. the basic aim was to understand a specific problem, model the problem appropriately and find an optimal or reasonably optimal solution using the techniques of operations research. this has given me a good background in issues related to methodology, modelling, and heuristic solutions. on the other hand, my research has been oriented towards strategic issues. the basic thrust of my junior year seminar and senior year project has been ‘integrative’. through my future research efforts i would like to understand this dichotomy better. initially, i want to study rigorous model-based methods and do research on operational and tactical topics. after gaining a thorough grounding in these topics, i am interested in applying the same methodologies and techniques to strategic topics in operations management.

i believe that i have the qualities to be a good researcher and teacher. i am a creative person and often think in a contemplative way about various issues of practical importance. being able to identify patterns and relationships that are not obvious to others is perhaps my greatest strength. this will prove very valuable because an integral part of being a researcher and teacher is to perceive the balance between theory and practice, analytical rigor and intuition. my communication skills are good and i like expressing ideas and concepts both in oral and written form - an ideal platform for the dissemination of knowledge in my chosen field of specialization.

the krannert graduate school of management is one of the best schools of management in the world with a strong orientation towards research. the spanersity of research interests in the operations management group is of particular interest to me. the eminent faculty and the inspanidualized nature of the doctoral program will definitely bring out the best in me. i would like to reiterate that i possess the background, the ability and the motivation to make a significant contribution to operations management. i hope you will take a favorable decision regarding my admission to the ph.d. program and i look forward to joining the krannert graduate school of management and purdue university.

Dear _,

To me, art is like a mystery which is to be solved. I see an

artwork as the concentration of an idea or concept into a physical entity. The

idea or concept is rarely evident through just looking at piece; it requires

analysis or scrutiny to interpret it. This is why I am rarely happy with a piece

of art unless I can see some meaning behind it. Whether it is my own or another

person’s, I feel a great satisfaction when I discover an underlying theme or

message; deliberate or not. It is like poring over a cryptic riddle or a puzzle

for time until all at once it falls into place.

Perhaps it is my obsession with problem-inducing things: cryptic

crosswords, chess, Rubik’s cubes, poker, cribbage and scrabble that have induced

this vision of art. It is the same either way. If I am looking at a Mark Rothko

painting, Rothko has set the puzzle to be deciphered and I am attempting to

solve it, even if the answer is as simple as, ‘a perfect combination of colour’.

If I create an artwork, it will have hidden parameters evident only by scrutiny.

It may be easy to interpret or it may be difficult, it doesn’t matter. I don’t

mind if people don’t interpret it the way I intended; only that it makes sense

in their own minds and that it gives them that same sense of satisfaction that I

get when I solve a puzzle. You could say that that is the ultimate motivation

for the art that I produce.

This theme has also played a strong role in the work that I have been doing

over the past year in my Art Foundation course. In the last ’self’-orientated

project I focussed on my fascination with playing cards and chess combined with

the physical aspects of my life. This has developed into my current project that

concentrates on aspects of chance (chess, playing cards) combined, symbolically,

with aspects of purpose (religion, gods, fate, strategy) through many different

mediums, including customised board games and sculptures. I am intrigued with

hidden meanings, so I am looking at artists such as Joseph Beuys and Leonardo Da

Vinci who are known to use a lot of symbolism in their work.

My current work has developed from many of the foundation course projects I

have done since the beginning of the year. I feel that this year has been a

significant indication of what path I want to follow in the future. I initially

enrolled with the mindset of trying it out and deciding what to do later on in

the year. I have worked hard at keeping up with work and have enjoyed being able

to develop my own ideas creatively over the last two terms. The foundation

course has already taught me how to be broad-minded about what art can be, and

the learning process has been somewhat enlightening. Ultimately I have enjoyed

the course; whether it is experimenting with interesting ideas in my own space,

sharing ideas with my peers about what we are doing or constructing sculptures

in the workshops. Upon having wandered around the degree student’s areas a few

times just to look at the work that is being produced I feel a connection to

what they are doing and what I am currently learning about and it makes me want

to go further with my work. This is why I wish to continue on at the degree

course. I believe it will challenge me and help me to evolve the art that I do

to an even further level.

Since October 2007, I have had a Saturday job working as an assistant in a

butcher’s. This job requires me to make deliveries, clean the shop, serve

customers, prepare meat and I often help out at the hog roast functions that the

shop hires out. I have done my best to work hard at this, as it is the only

proper job I have had apart from a paper round. Alongside attending the

foundation course I feel that it has made me a much more organised and confident

person in terms of arranging my life. I have definitely enjoyed working there as

much as I have worked hard at it. To resound the work I have done I have been

offered more work at the shop and at supervising hog roasts during the

summer.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen
