Dear _,

For a long time now I have been interested in the subject of psychology.

The way people behave and why they do certain things has always fascinated me

and after thoroughly enjoying studying the subject at A level I would like to

continue to further my knowledge and study psychology at a higher level.

The A levels I currently study include maths statistics and Philosophy and

ethics. Maths statistics will be advantageous to me whilst studying degree level

psychology, especially when studying area's such as research methods. Studying

Philosophy and ethics also has its advantages in psychology, especially when

covering the ethical issues raised when conducting psychological experiments. I

recently attended a Maths masterclass at Newcastle University which has given me

an insight into what university life will be like, and has further reassured me

that attending university is the right decision for me.

I am part of the peer mentoring team at school. This is an anonymous

service where the pupils at school can email us with their problems and I get

great satisfaction from knowing that I have helped people. Working with a range

of different people and problems has helped me to gain insight into how people

work and I am eager to learn more about the easiest and most efficient ways of

dealing with these problems. It has helped to develop my communication skills,

through dealing with a range of different people. This experience has helped me

to decide that I would particularly like to study psychology with counselling,

as I feel that I would thoroughly enjoy the challenge and the satisfaction

gained from a career in this area.

I recently completed a week of work experience at the local playgroup where

I worked with children aged 2-4. This enabled me to witness firsthand some of

the issues covered in the day care section of the attachment module in AS

psychology, particularly the way in which children develop socially. I

thoroughly enjoyed working with these children and was delighted when the leader

of the playgroup asked me to return to do voluntary work during my free

mornings. I now currently assist the children with ICT skills one morning a

week. Additionally I am currently organising voluntary work at a local care home

for the elderly as I believe working with people from a range of age groups will

be beneficial.

My part time job at McDonalds where I work 18-25 hours a week has helped to

build my confidence and my communication skills as I am constantly in contact

with customers and colleagues. It has also helped me to develop my time

management skills as I have always kept up to date with my school work. It also

developed my ability to work quickly and efficiently when under pressure, and I

believe that I have the ability to successfully multi-task.

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my friends. I regularly attend

music concerts and go to the cinema with them. I am a member at the local

leisure centre where I often go to the gym and occasionally go swimming to keep

myself fit.

I am looking forward to beginning the challenge of university life. It is

an exciting opportunity and I believe that studying a course in Psychology with

Counselling is the first step towards my chosen future career as a Counselling

Psychologist.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Professor ____

I am a student, graduated from BaoYang middle school, Nanning, GuangXi autonomous region, in 20__. I am still studying in high school now, because I was not enrolled by the ideal university last year. Recently, I have a dream to study abroad. Then I search online and find that it is more convenient and suitable for me to go to New Zealand for study.

First, New Zealand is a multicultural country, which has the most advanced education in the world. Second, the tuition is lower than other countries’, which I think is more reasonable for me.

Finally, the climate of New Zealand is similar with the climate of the South of China. Considering above reasons, I told my parents my plan on going to New Zealand for study, and my parent agreed with me.

As a girl, I like preschool education since I was young. Nowadays, Chinese parents, who want their children to get better education, pay more attention to preschool education. If I study specialized curriculums on preschool education, I will go back China and work hard on preschool education after leaving college.

My plan is as follows: first, I plan to study English in language institute for about a half year in New Zealand. Then, I will study specialized curriculums on preschool education.

I believe I have the ability of study abroad, because I have finished all high school curriculums. Besides, my parents both have job and have rich income, so they will support me to finish my study. After finishing my study, I will return to my homeland and work on preschool education, so as to realize my life value.

Dear _,

Engaged in hotel and catering business has been my dream for a long time. I

have been thinking privately to choose my favorite major in high school and it

is also my motivation to study. Travelling and tasting delicacies have always

been my two great hobbies, and I have constantly fantasized how wonderful it

will be to combine the work and life in the future with my interests and

hobbies. So I choose Tourism Management (biasing towards hotel management) as my

major in university.

The learning contents of my major are more comprehensive, which makes me

able to contact much knowledge in related fields. Such studies have made me

benefit a lot, understand the knowledge related to the tourism industry and the

catering industry more comprehensively, and have a solid foundation and good

capacity and further specify the direction of my development-hotel management in

the course of continuous learning improvement. With a goal in mind, I have been

trying to do well in each step after entering university and reasonably arrange

my study and life. At the same time of learning professional knowledge with

great efforts and maintaining good grades, I have actively joined the school

club activities, organized and participated in various school activities and

public-service activities (AIDS Day publicity, care for the children left

behind, etc.), and established the “Association for Learning” with several

excellent students, which is an organization providing services for students who

take part in the entrance exams for postgraduate schools, graded examinations

and English studies, etc. The association was awarded The 10 Best College

Associations by Chengdu Youth League in 2009. I have ever served as: Vice

Minister of the Department of Culture and Sports of the school Student Apartment

Management Committee, Minister of the school “Association for Learning”,

Director of the Secretary Department of the school Psychological Development

Association; obtained the scholarship and won the title of “Excellent Student

Cadre” during the 2007/2008 academic year. The full life and good professional

basis in the first and second college life have not only made me mature,

enhanced my social skills, but also increased my confidence in the future study.

The specialized courses and common basic courses in the third year have started

to add some practical courses, which have given me more opportunities of

extracurricular practice, trained my ability to combine theory and practice and

let me better apply the knowledge into the practice.

It seems to me that Hotel Management is definitely a good choice. The rapid

take-off of the Chinese economy and the rising living standard of the people

have promoted the constant development of the tourism industry, and its

development speed and potential can not be ignored. Therefore, I have always

been full of confidence in the tourism industry and the related catering

industry. The college I study in has education cooperation with Perth Institute

of Tourism and Hospitality and the combination of Chinese and Australian

teaching method lets me learn a lot of specialized knowledge, while in the

course of study, I have not only found that there is still a certain gas between

our school’s education quality of the major and the internationally advanced

level, but also discovered the advantage of foreign education and the

advancement and perfection of their hospitality industry. So I determine to go

abroad for further studies. Your school’s learning environment and education

quality are what I have dreamed of and I have been paying attention to the

situation and development of your school, especially the information about the

major of hospitality. I hope I can study in your school and then return home to

fulfill my dream after successful graduation, to start a restaurant of my own

characteristics. I also hope your school, which I am quite satisfied with and

longing for, can give me an opportunity to pursue further education, and I will

appreciate very much.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

One of the most appealing features of Physics is the way that complex

physical phenomena can be explained by simple and elegant theories. I enjoy the

logical aspect of the subject and I find it very satisfying when all the

separate pieces of a problem fall together to create one simple theory. My

interest and aptitude for maths adds an extra dimension to Studying science,

particularly Physics. I relish the challenge of a complicated problem both in

physics and mathematics. I am also a keen practical physicist, during a degree I

would like to keep in touch with the practical side of the subject.

My interest in science extends outside the classroom. I keep up to date

with new developments and ideas by reading around my school subjects in books

and also in journals such as "New Scientist" and "Scientific American". I have

read books by Richard Feynman, Richard Dawkins and lan Stewart, I also

particularly enjoyed John Archibald Wheeler's "A Journey into Gravity and

Spacetime". These books challenge me in a way that is very different from the

way in which I am required to think at school.Over the summer holidays of 2001 I

arranged three weeks of work experience in the Department of Materials Science

at the University of Oxford. During this time I worked with three different

research groups studying the atomic structure of surfaces, use of the 3D atom

probe, and the structure of magnetic storage surfaces. The work on magnetic

surfaces was particularly exciting because it was a new development that could

have a significant impact. I also wrote some documents for them, such as a guide

to help students find Materials Science resources on the Internet. The whole

experience was very useful because I had to apply what I had leamt at school to

unfamiliar areas, thus using my brain in an entirely new way.I am a keen

sportsman both in and out of school, having represented my school, and the

Oxford Devils' under-17 team, at basketball. For the past three years I have

played cricket for the school team, being captain for two years I have been in

the Oxfordshire cricket squad for my age group since the age of thirteen and

have been a senior player at Bicester and North Oxford-Cricket Club since 1998.

Playing team sports has taught me a lot about the importance of team work and I

believe I can apply this in a working environment. Recently, I discovered an

enthusiasm for scuba diving, and have achieved my open water diving

license.During my time at university I aim to get a first class education that

will stand me in good stead for entering the world of work; I also want to

continue my education in an environment in which I can thrive mentally. In

return, the university will get a student who is hard working, always willing to

learn and will put something back into the community.

My fascination with science started at a very early age. The branch of

science that interested me most had always been physics. My approach led me to

ask questions like “What makes the InterCity 125 the (then) fastest train in the

world?” after having travelled on it. Hence I pursued a string of hobbies such

as trainspotting, concentrating on things like the power of the engines and how

they work. When they ran into one another, I would ask questions such as “What

makes the cab crumple in the way that it does? What if instead I bash two

neutrons together at near to the speed of light?” In order to keep up to date

with all the new developments I read the New Scientist every week. I have chosen

to do Physics at university simply as a quest for knowledge. My interest in

music gradually merged with my interest in physics as I learnt to tune the

Harpsichord and listening out for ‘resultants’ which are the tell-tale sign of

bad tuning. In the universities that offer it, I have chosen to do Physics/Music

joint degrees so that I can extend my understanding of the physical phenomena of

music and can also enjoy my violin-playing. In other universities I have chosen

courses that delay specialisation because I have also a strong interest in the

chemistry of materials. In my free time I pursue a wide range of activities

including music (performing, listening and composing, specialising in the music

of the Baroque period, having attained A/B Grade 8 on the Violin and Grade 5

with Distinction in Theory), circuit design and construction, calligraphy,

philately, software design and computer programming (Pascal, C, HTML, BASIC,

8086 and 6502 Assembler), typesetting and publishing - including the school arts

magazine “Cerulean”, sailing in dinghies, visiting historical sites and reading

about them. I have been a committee member of the computer society, secretary of

the junior scripture union, an assistant school librarian, a cricketer in the

3rd XI, on the committee of the School Student Council and on the panel of the

“Young Enterprise” scheme. When Science ‘at home’ happened in 1995 I presented a

very successful display on rates of reaction and I subsequently gained an

academic scholarship to Felsted. I have given various talks as a member of the

debating society, representing my division and the school in various debates.

After having been awarded a Senior Scholarship in the Lower Sixth at Felsted, I

was invited to join the “Andrew Society”, the senior academic society of the

school, to which I gave various presentations. I have also played in at least 7

orchestras, participated in various plays & musicals, sung in various

choirs, rehearsed the orchestra for the “divisional music contest” and led the

William Wood Harpsichord Trio for 2 years, including an item in a concert at the

Usher Hall. During the Summer I was responsible for the Northern Festival

Sinfonia, and organised a charity concert for them which raised a substantial

amount of money for the Handel House Trust. In my Lower Sixth I spent

considerable time helping with the maintenance and repairs of the school

computers and the network, and also wrote various applications some of which

have been released as shareware. Thus, this summer I was able to work as a

freelance computing consultant in Edinburgh. I have been very interested in

pottery and the chemistry of glazes, when I had the opportunity to attend a

pottery class after school. In my upbringing I attended various masterclasses on

Mathematics and Physics, a Theology class every week for 3 years, the

‘Understanding Industry’ course and an SSPCA ‘Caring for Animals’ course in

1994, obtained 3 Gold certificates in Scottish Mathematics competitions,

including one ‘best in school’, as well as qualifying as a Leading Seaman in CCF

Navy.

Yours sincerely,

In capacity as Professor of Mathematics at Fudan University I''m writing to

recommend Mr.Wang Gesintosyour PhD program in Computer Science.I have known

Mr.Wang since his sophomore year of college and have acted as his thesis advisor

and mentor. In my experience he is agifted and diligent student and an admirably

hard worker.

Wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome the

significant challenge of aserious illness during his freshman year. When Ifirst

met Wang in my Discrete Math class he did not appear to be anything special to

me.While his exam scores were good they were not as high as Iwould now expect of

him. What Ididn''t know then was that due to his illness Wang was attempting to

take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one time including

Discrete Mathematics Advanced Mathematics Linear Algebra and Possibilities. While

most students found preparing for just one set of these exams diffic ult Wang

was overwhelmed by four of them. But in the end he achieved an impressive score

on the final exam which made me conscious of his unusual determination he

demonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.

Mr.Wang and Ihave often talked about avariety of mathematics and computer

science concepts and problems.During these discussions Ialways found him to be

delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the concepts and

problems presented to him he is able to analyze these problems and present

solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang''s thinking is intensely

rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it and if he

finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately.I believe this kind of

thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.

Serving as his thesis advisor Ihad afirst-hand opportunity to observe the

way in which Wang''s mind works. In his senor thesis Mr.Wang mainly discussed two

challenging questions in regards to″A NN″.In our books in China knowledge of ANN

and its uses are very rare.Few people in China have studied this topic and

consequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited.Working on this

difficult project not only did Mr.Wang rise to the challenge but he went above

and beyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sources and test them for

accuracy in practice. In this way he found mistakes in the book that we use.His

diligence and hard work made me extremely proud of him.

Mr.Wang is an intelligent motivated and industrious individual.Teaching and

advising him has been adelightful pleasure.I know that if given the chance to

study abroad in America he will arm himself to become agreat programmer he

dreams of being. He has the intelligence and background to achieve these

goals-now all he needs is the opportunity.I ask that you look upon his

application favorably and grant him achance to study in your university.

Dear _,

As a double major in Anthropology and Psychology at the University of Rhode

Island, I have gained a strong background in both fields. My background is

especially strong in physical anthropology, my primary field of interest.

Physical anthropology consumes my life; I do not study it because I find it

somewhat interesting but because I am devoted to it; I want to make it my life.

In addition to maintaining a high GPA throughout my college career, and making

the Dean's list several times, I have also worked hard as a supervisor at Brooks

demonstrates my determination to gaining a high quality education and the

seriousness with which I treat academics, but also attests to my leadership

ability, maturity, and responsibility, both as a supervisor and as a student at

the University of Rhode Island.

My primary goal in applying to your graduate program is to prepare myself for

a career in forensic anthropology. Interested in furthering the current body of

research and in improving techniques used in the identification of human

remains, I am very committed to pursuing forensic anthropology and believe your

graduate program in anthropology will provide me with an excellent foundation in

the area of physical and forensic anthropology. With a Master's degree and

Ph.D., I will be well prepared to lead a very promising career. While I have no

doubt that the program will push me to my limits, I am confident that I can face

the rigorous challenges posed by graduate study and thrive under the demanding

environment that advanced studies entail.

From my transcripts, you will see that not only am I a well-balanced student,

I actually thrive in rigorous, upper level courses, courses akin to

graduate-level courses. Armed with the confidence that I can excel at difficult

courses, I believe I can achieve the highest level of success and satisfaction

by taking the most demanding graduate program available.

In addition to my ability to excel in the classroom, I have demonstrated a

proficiency in all aspects of conducting research. Research has become a

fundamental part of my college career, and I hope it will become the primary

component of my future. As a sophomore at the University of Rhode Island, I

designed a research project entitled "Grooming and Affiliative Behavior in Three

Species of Non-Human Primates" under the guidance of Dr. Su Boatright Horowitz

in the Psychology Department at URI. My research proposal gained approval from

the Institutional Care and Use Committee at URI and at the Roger William Park

and Zoo where the three species of non-human primates (Gibbons, Sakis, and

Lemurs) included in my study are kept. In addition to writing a successful

research proposal, I also wrote and received a small funds grant from the

University of Rhode Island in order to conduct my research. By being intimately

involved in every aspect of research, from proposal and grant writing to data

collection and analysis, I have learned what it takes to be a researcher, but

more than that, I have learned how fulfilling and interesting research can

be.

In the spring of 2005, I will be presenting my results at a poster

presentation at the University of Rhode Island, and am planning to eventually

publish my findings. Not only has this experience shown me that I am capable of

excelling in conducting research, but it has also allowed me to develop a love

for the hands on learning that is so crucial to successful research. In my final

semester at URI, I will be participating in an ongoing research project

concerning brain function and attention span under the direction of Dr. Dominic

Valentino, a professor in the psychology department at URI. This project will

undoubtedly further advance my academic skills and reinforce my passion for

research.

Physical anthropology is more than just my primary area of education; it has

also become my hobby and lifestyle. The questions posed and answered via the

study of physical anthropology have fascinated me for a very long time and have

stimulated me to ask and seek to answer further questions. With my mind set on

the very specific goal of preparing myself as excellently as possible for a

future in the field of forensic anthropology, I am fully confident that, with

the ability to pursue my education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I

will not only be able to fulfill my dream, but to contribute substantially to

the university as well.

Yours sincerely,

1、语言成绩:需提交TOEFL或IELTS考试成绩;

International Trade and Investment

1. Thunderbird School of Global Management(雷鸟商学院)

(Master

2. Brandeis University (布兰迪斯大学)

(Master of

Arts in International Economics and Finance)。

Dear _,

"I feel the capacity to care is the thing which gives life its deepest

significance."I want to make a dramatic difference to people's lives!

I feel that Radiotherapy is the perfect profession to fulfil this. I am

confident that I can become, with your help, a very successful Radiotherapist

because I believe that my personality traits and skill sets are perfect for

Radiotherapy - I'm responsible, caring, supportive, trusting, empathetic and most

of all I am an inexhaustible source of positivity and always have a smile on my

face. I am extremely interested in Science - particularly Physics which I study

in school.

The continuing professional development within Radiotherapy is very

appealing to me and I love the idea of entering a diverse and rapidly changing

career. I enjoy working as part of a team, and feel my good interpersonal skills

would be utilised as a Radiotherapist.

I did work experience in one of Ireland's largest and busiest Radiotherapy

Departments -Whitfield Clinic. I was given a thorough guide through the areas of

consultancy, simulation, treatment and mould making phases of Radiotherapy which

only fuelled my desire to study your degree. I was shown simulation machines,

scans of patients with various illnesses, CT and MRI Scanners as well as the

Linear Accelerators. I was introduced to other members of the Oncology team,

such as the Medical Physicist, and was given an outline of their roles. I felt

the work experience was inspirational and fascinated me, and even though I was

only in the Radiotherapy department for a short time, it proved to me that

Radiotherapy is the career that I am most suited to.

To further expand my knowledge of Radiotherapy and its practices, I did

extensive research on the subject, to ensure that it would be a suitable career

path for me. I read several publications from the Society of Radiographers, most

notably the publications on "Summary of Intervention for Acute Radiotherapy

Induced Skin Reactions in Patients", "Learning and Development Framework for

Clinical Imaging and Oncology","Implementing The Career Framework in

Radiotherapy", Policy Into Practice, "End of Life Strategy", and "Patient

Advocacy".

I feel the Radiotherapy courses in the UK have much more to offer than the

one Radiotherapy course in Ireland, in terms of employability after the course,

Employers deem the vast clinical experience gained on UK courses essential for

the successful introduction of newly graduated Radiotherapists into their

clinic. The world class standard and professional recognition that your course

offers would also ensure that I would graduate a very capable Radiation

Therapist.

I have done a lot of voluntary and fund-raising work in my local community.

I volunteer at my local Youth Club every week, where I work as part of a team to

provide a social outlet to children in the local community. I have also

volunteered in a local retirement home which has showed me my ability to

establish trusting relationships quickly and has also proved that I can

successfully interact with a diverse range of people.

I am very excited at the prospect of starting your Radiotherapy course and

if selected I hope I can follow in the footsteps of your long list of very

successful alumni.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

When a friend asked me: "Why do you like computer science?" I found myself

unable to give an answer. However, from that moment on, I tried to understand

what makes computer science so attractive for me.

My passion for computer science started in the 9th grade, when I started

studying it as part of the intensive informatics curriculum in my high school.

What struck me at first was the immense processing power that I had at my

disposal by means of the computer, but it took a while for me to discover that

this power was insufficient for trivial algorithms. This made me want to know

more, so I bought "Introduction to Algorithms" by Thomas H. Cormen. This book

presented me with a completely new world, the world of algorithms. In addition

to this, I learned a lot of new aspects of this field and I practically decided

that computer science is what I wanted to do further on. That's how it all

started.

In the academic year 2006-2007, I participated in an excellence course on

the subject of computer science. This made me gain experience, on one hand in

informatics, and on the other hand in social relations. I learned to be more

creative, to listen to other people's opinions and I developed my communication

abilities, along with improving my skills in programming. Moreover, I

participated in many national contests where I faced new challenges and where I

learned more about this field. In 2007, I received first place at the National

Informatics Olympiad bynet, which gave me the opportunity to take part at the

national informatics team selection. In the same year I also won second place at

the National Contest "Grigore Moisil".

One of my best experiences worth mentioning took place during May-August

2008, when I worked as a volunteer at the SNAC Romania association. Along with a

graphics designer and a logopedist, I developed educational software for

children with disabilities (dyslalia, dyslexia, late speaking), the programming

aspect being realized entirely by me. The software was made entirely in C++,

using the SDL library (http://libsdl.org), and consisted of over 15000 lines of

code. This experience helped me understand how a project must be managed, how to

respect deadlines and how to improve my computer science abilities.

Apart from my interest in computer science and my study preoccupation, I

also give my spare time an important role, because it is the only occasion for

me to relax. Music is one of my biggest passions, and that is why, in the 9th

grade, I started playing drums. By choosing drums as an instrument, I discovered

that I prefer order and rhythmicity, and I also discovered that I tend to keep a

strict order in everything I do. When it comes to sports, I prefer swimming as

much as I can, because it improves my self-control and is benefic for my health

and spirit. In addition to this, during weekends and vacations, I practice

alpinism, as I consider that it gives me the occasion to face and handle extreme

situations. I recently conquered the highest peak in Romania, Mount Moldoveanu

(2544 m). I also participated at a first-aid national contest organized by the

Red Cross Romania, which gave me the opportunity to be the leader of a rescue

team. This helped me understand better how to face critical situations and

improve my leadership skills.

I often think that computer science will give me the chance to reach higher

peaks, and I really consider that it has already helped me see life in a

different way. Programming gave me the chance to help many children with special

needs, to meet interesting people, to discover a new world. That is exactly why

I would like to study and follow a career in this field.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Who will be there to help you, when your life is turned upside down and you

don't know how to carry on, what to do, or whether you can pick yourself up and

start again?

Some of us, if we're lucky, have family and friends to hold our hands and

guide us through the darkest, most difficult days of our lives. Others are lucky

enough to have one or more health professionals, who are not just good at their

jobs, but have passion and compassion; who care about their patients, and whose

patient's care is of the utmost importance to them.

As a mother, daughter, wife, divorcee, partner and friend I am fortunate

enough to have had support when I needed it and more importantly to have been

able to give support to others who have needed it. It's something which has

always given me great pleasure - to be there for someone who needs me; to help,

listen, advise, suggest ways of solving problems and positive action; encourage,

nurture, teach and even to engage in activities with people at certain times in

their lives to help motivate them.

Now that I have a second chance in life to study; to choose a vocation

which I am passionate about - something rewarding, challenging, inspiring,

enjoyable and most of all where I would be able to do good, help people empower

themselves, change their lives - I know after months of research and talking to

people that OT ticks every box.

When I was 17, I did work experience in a Foyer D'Handicapee in Epinal,

France, with severely disabled teenagers and young adults. I found it immensely

rewarding and enjoyable, although I later concentrated my studies on music.

Being a parent has meant that certain aspects of me have grown and

developed; both in terms of bringing up my children and supporting other

parents. In some ways this fuelled my interest in how the mind works, its

development, and contributed to a bookshelf on the subject. It has greatly

increased my patience, intuition and creativity, and I believe I have always had

very good communication, people and organisational skills, as well as a (highly

necessary!) great sense of humour and positive approach to life.

I am a sympathetic listener, open-minded and tolerant of others lifestyles

and I think that along with my problem-solving skills, and desire to help

people, the range of activities which I am skilled at and enjoy would greatly

aid me in helping people to rehabilitate themselves.

I enjoy listening to and playing music, creative writing, poetry, theatre

and the arts - as well as being artistic myself (2 small children are a great

licence to indulge all forms of art and craft!). I am a great cook; enjoy DIY;

keen on growing all things edible; I am IT literate and due to work and life

adept at organising bills/expenses and general paperwork. I also love the

outdoors and active pursuits, such as mountain-biking, paint-balling, riding the

odd elephant and more - with a high degree of enthusiasm! I've always been very

sociable and made friends with people of all ages and walks of life; mainly due

to my sense of humour, general affability and interest in others. Of late it has

given me pleasure to help my own friends by teaching one to drive, supporting

friends with children by organising outings with them, and helping a friend who

was very unhappy with her weight by motivating her to go biking/walking/to the

gym with me and suggesting easy diet changes.

I have friends within this sector and talking to them has only strengthened

my belief that this is something I very much want to do, and would be very good

at - plus they seem to think I would make a great OT too! I am a very determined

person and extremely committed to doing this course. I believe that my past

qualifications prove my academic capabilities and my life experience and

disposition would make me an ideal candidate from a personal point of view.

Unbeknownst to me, I have been a 'skilled helper' for most of my life, which I

only found out recently through personal research and reading.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

Law &

(Natural resources)

Part

Dear _,

It is my conviction that the meaning of life does not dwell in the length

of time that one can live or the material abundance that one can acquire, but in

the richness and the wonderfulness of life itself. With the increase of my age,

many things in my life have changed. But one thing remains constant, that is, I

will consistently insist on doing what I like to do and hope that my endeavors

can be valuable to the life of others. I see this as the only way whereby I can

realize the value of my life.

My undergraduate study focused on economics and I achieved remarkable

scholastic performance in this field. My GPA is 3.44 (my GRE score is 2020 and

TOEFL---- ). For four consecutive years of my undergraduate study, I received

scholarships for my distinguished academic performance. Due to my equally

prominent performance in extracurricular activities I was conferred on the

Outstanding Student in Campus Activities. However, honestly speaking, my real

interest lies not in economics, but in education. Ever since I was a primary

school student, I had cherished a strong desire for a teaching career

exemplified by my teachers. In the actual teaching career that I embarked on

upon my graduating from university, I have become increasingly aware that the

existing educational conditions in China are far from satisfactory. The backward

teaching methodology and the prevailing pedagogical ideology have rendered

Chinese education out of place with the modern international development in

education. On the macro level, the current education theory and practice in

China lag significantly behind advanced countries in the West. For instance,

though education via the internet has achieved considerable development in past

two years, in practical operation such education has more often than not

deteriorated into an extended form of the conventional examination-oriented

education instead of a really interactive process. In my personal experience,

despite the fact that some of the problems that I have encountered in my

teaching career can be solved by consulting relevant technical literature, I

have found that the more serious flaws inherent in China's current educational

system cannot be worked out easily. Under such circumstances, an advanced

program in education becomes necessary.

In this age of information, traditional education, both in its ideology and

methodology, has met unprecedented challenge like many other aspects of human

existence. Meanwhile, the pursuit for higher levels of educational development

and of the quality of life has largely transformed the educational value

orientation of the general public. The educational model that is centered around

the cognitive and intellectual instruction has been seriously questioned.

Greater attention has been devoted to the cultivation of well-developed

personality and to the ontological status of the individual in education. Such

issues as the internal studies of education science, scientific decision-making

in education, and meta-education have also been increasingly emphasized upon.

There have also been innovations in educational research methodology. The

tendency has been to combine modern technology with humanistic research

categories and with naturalistic research categories, and to organically

integrate qualitative descriptions with quantitative descriptions. It is also

important to carry out educational experimentations in which educational

predictions are complemented by educational feedbacks. Both the complexity of

education and the complexity of human individuals have made the comprehensive

application of diverse educational approaches necessary. Those new horizons are

what fascinate me.

In view of the following qualifications that I have acquired, I believe

that I will acquit myself satisfactorily in the prospective Ph.D. program in

education that I am currently endeavoring to apply for. First and foremost, as

is often claimed, one's interest is one's best director. I believe that I will

do well what I am really interested in doing. Secondly, though I majored in

economics as an undergraduate, my trainings during that stage helped develop

effective modes of thinking and research approaches. In addition, I

conscientiously self-studied many works related to education, including A

Developmental History of Educational Science in the West, which enabled me to

construct a solid groundwork for more advanced studies in this field. Next, it

can be safely asserted that education and economics are not entirely separated.

For example, it is necessary to apply many statistical methods in educational

psychology and my academic record indicates that statistics is the subject that

I am most good at. Last but not the least, my current teaching career and my

teaching experience will play a positive role in facilitating my target degree

program.

The reason why I apply for the University of ------------ is that it is the

first state university with a time-honored history. The School of Education in

this university is quite prominent among its counterparts in the field. I am

particularly attracted by the School's powerful pedagogical resource, vibrant

intellectual atmosphere and a comprehensive curriculum. I plan to apply for a

degree program in Instructional Technology or Educational Psychology, both of

which enjoy unparalleled academic reputation in the world. My application for

Instructional Technology is motivated by my strong interest in the application

of modern science and technology, especially the information technology

represented by the Internet, in the field of education and in the nature of a

series of revolutionary changes resulting thereof. Instructional Technology is a

new discipline that has emerged as a result of the rapid development of modern

communication technology since the late 20th century. It has tremendous

potential for development and commercial application. As for my motive in

selecting Educational Psychology as another possible area of specialization in

my degree program, it is my long-cherished interest that primarily counts. On

the other hand, all the accomplished educators since the 1960's have been

well-versed in psychology. Almost every important new educational theory is

derived psychological findings in one way or another so that educational

psychology has subsequently developed into a fundamental subject for the science

of education. The tendency in the 21st century is to emphasize on the micro

research of educational activities and against this backdrop educational

psychology will be attached greater importance. In Instructional Technology, I

would like to focus on the following studies: how to improve educational

efficiency by applying research results from natural sciences and engineering

technology; how to explore the combination and coordination of pedagogical

contents and to improve teaching methodology by exploiting the theoretical

findings from psychology and educational science concerning the process of

teaching and learning. In Educational Psychology, I will concentrate on applied

cognition and development, gifted and creative education, genetics and children

development, personality structure and individual differences and other related

subjects.

For me, to shift from economics to education and to pursue an advanced

degree in the United States is not so much a challenge as an opportunity. At

present, major reforms are being introduced into virtually every important

aspect of Chinese society. The field of education especially calls for

comprehensive reforms. The United States occupies an absolutely leading position

in the present-day world in education. It is my conviction that, in the United

States, advanced educational theories, technologies and information will

facilitate me immensely in the achievement of remarkable academic progress,

fulfilling my aspiration to become an accomplished professional in the field of

education. This will not only bring my patriotic fervor into reality but also

make my life more meaningful and rewarding.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

In China as in the US, one can easily give up the career of a language

teacher to become a lawyer or a businessman. I, however, gave up a promising

legal and business career to become a language teacher, but I have never

regretted it. In fact, the more I teach, the more committed I am to teaching.

But not just teaching. Having battled with China’s traditional mode of teaching

for several years, I now would like to help improve teaching in China by

introducing new and more effective instructional technology and media into the

country. For that, I would like to pursue an advanced degree in education in

your country.

Now an English teacher at the training center of the China National

Container Corporation, I graduated in 1995 from the Capital University of

Economics and Business in Beijing, where I majored in business law. At this

highly respected higher-learning institution, I received broad training that was

both rigorous and vigorous. After four years of undergraduate studies, the

strong logic inherent in law translated into strong logic in my thinking. With

the knowledge and skills I attained in the law program, I boast the kind of

intellectual maturity that would help me whatever I do. But law was never my

first choice for a profession.

Starting from my high school days, I always dreamed of becoming a teacher.

In the second year of high school, we once had to write an essay on the topic

“what do you want to do when you grow up”. I proudly wrote, “I want to be a

teacher!” But my parents shattered my dream by insisting that I pursue another

profession. My father, an engineer with a Ph. D. degree, and my mother, a

university teacher of English, had their reasons. Chinese teachers, particularly

those teaching at the primary and secondary levels, are poorly paid and

begrudgingly respected. Being young and inexperienced in the world, I acceded to

their wishes when I was choosing my major for the university.

But my passion for teaching was not to be stifled forever. Giver any

opportunity, it would burst out. Upon graduation with an LL. B. Degree, I first

took up the position of a supervisor with the China National Container

Corporation in charge of its Overseas Sales Department. As the job entailed

frequent translation and interpretation between Chinese and English, I persisted

in improving my English proficiency by attending various training courses and

learning it on my own. My command of the foreign tongue became so good that,

after about one year, I began to teach it to my colleagues on a full-time basis

at the company’s training center. After a huge detour, my career finally got

back on track.

What makes teaching so enjoyable to me is that it is a learning experience.

I enjoy it the most when my students ask difficult questions, particularly

questions that I have to think long and hard to answer. I also enjoy posing

questions to students, but my questions are never intended to intimidate the

students or even test their knowledge but rather designed to stimulate their

minds. In the constant exchange of questions and answers, students and teachers

improve themselves alike to the credit of the old Chinese saying: To teach is to

learn. In my three years of teaching, I really have learned a great deal.

One of the things I have learned is the ability to not only deal with but

also strike an accord with people of different backgrounds. My students at the

training center are all adults accomplished in a variety of roles and

professions. In most cases, they are older than I am. While I stand as their

equals, I have served as their mentors and role models the same way as most

teachers do their students. By so doing, I have won their trust and confidence

in what I teach, which has helped to make my teaching powerful and

effective.

To take full advantage of my teaching skills, I started in October 1996 to

teach English and other subjects at the primary school I attended when I was a

child. As the children I teach are at the age when I studied here, I am

particularly sensitive to their needs and appreciative of their potential.

Together with other teachers, I designed various training programs in

calligraphy, art, writing, mental calculation, and English, programs that

combine learning with entertainment. The kids n my class are now learning more

and faster thanks to the fun they find everyday in my programs.

Entertainment is, however, by no means just a ploy I use to sweeten the

bitter pill of learning for the children, but rather has its own intrinsic

value. While kids can hardly learn well without being able to have fun, the lack

of fun hurts more than the kids’ ability to learn. It can impair the kids’

emotional and psychological health to an extent that no amount of knowledge and

skills drab teaching force-feeds into them can make up. Entertainment is

therefore part and parcel of what we teachers have to provide to children if we

are to help them grow up into productive members of the society. The way I see

entertainment, it should be considered an end in education.

As China’s education is oriented overwhelmingly towards helping kids pass

exams, entertainment is about the least on the mind of an average teacher or

principal. In the rush to produce super kids as measured by the grades out of

exams, the purpose of education is lost all too often. The curriculum is limited

to subjects covered by mandatory exams. Students are seldom encouraged to come

up with original ideas. Interaction between teachers and students is kept at a

minimum in the classroom. The teachers compete to heap homework on the students,

as do the parents. While everybody is tired to death, few kids get armed with

the ability to take initiatives or solve real-world problems. It is high time

that fresh approaches were brought in.

One of the ways to make a change to the Chinese classroom is to utilize new

technologies and media of teaching. School authorities in China, as those

elsewhere, increasingly realize the importance of computerization, and many of

the better-off schools in China are already stacked with state-of-the-art

computers. But reports say only a tiny fraction of those computers are

adequately utilized. The situation with other educational technologies and media

is no better. They are either absent from the school sitting or vastly

under-used. Few Chinese teachers have acquired the know-how or the drive to make

use of these modern facilities.

I therefore would like to pursue first a master’s degree and then a Ph. D.

degree in instructional technology and media in the United States, where the use

of modern educational facilities is undoubtedly the most advanced in the world.

Judging by the information I have culled from your, website I think your

institution is an American leader in the research and studies of this field. I

am anxious to study under the seasoned guidance of your distinguished faculty. I

hope that, after I complete my advanced training in your program, I can be a

much more effective teacher in China, one that sets an example for all other

Chinese teachers.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen
