Dear _,

Biology Personal StatementSince

As long ago as I can remember I have always been fascinated by the natural

world. That childish fascination has not left me but deepened over the years.

This interest has led me to my love of biology, ecology, animal behaviour and

evolution.

Following my graduation from High School I studied Biological Sciences for

two years at the Catholic University of Chile in Santiago. From March 1997 to

November 1998 I was obliged to take a break from my studies at university as my

father was moving from the city to a more remote rural area. While helping my

father I was able to work closely with birds of prey among others and I was

successful in breeding the endangered chinchillas. During my time away from

university I continued to deepen my knowledge of my subject and studied

evolutionary thinking and the biological basis of behaviour. I also worked for a

brief time as a translator which made me think that perhaps my English was good

enough o complete my studies in an English speaking country.

Since coming to Oxford and studying at OLT I have improved my written

English a great deal. I am a member of The Natural History Museum (London) and

recently attended a course called 'The History of Evolution'. The course was

organised by Birkbeck College and took place at the Natural History museum in

London each Wednesday. The course has been fascinating and has served to confirm

my suspicion that the more I learn of this subject the more I want to know.

I am hopeful that my previous studies in Santiago, my maturity and my

experience in this field will allow me to enter the second year of an

undergraduate programme in the UK. After completing my undergraduate it is my

wish to continue studying at postgraduate level and ultimately conduct my own

research in this area.

My other academic interests include, Paleoanthropology, and the history and

development of science. I am most interested in the writings of Darwin and

Thomas and Henry Huxley.

I am keen on fitness training, horse riding, trekking and diving. I am most

interested in all outdoor pursuits. I am also keen to develop my newly found

skills in classical singing and dance.

I realise that as a non-native student I will be required to work harder

than my contemporaries and I am prepared to do that. I have a cheerful and

open-minded disposition and look forward to sharing and exploring new ideas.

I hope may application will be considered favourably.

Yours sincerely,

A wise man once said “how dreadful knowledge of the truth can be, when there’s no help in truth.” I think, out of all thoughtful things one can think about, this quotes is unique description of what the depth of Drama and the Performing Arts can do for people. By studying Drama, we can become a variety of people, trapped within one single mind, all trying to be freed and each with their own personality and poison. Humanity has helped Drama so much to produce narrative of such calibre, and characters of such depth and poise – characters, which can be as sweet and innocent, or can take the more disgusting side of what being a human is, being as evil as what thought possible

Performance Art explores the whole range of human emotion and can produce tremendous performances and visual experiences and with Drama, in particular, we can go further than flesh and blood and express ourselves as somebody else and take on this ‘mask’. The most profound thing I have found when studying Drama is that we can become any person in the entire world, and still be us

I have always had a love for the performing arts since I can remember; for there has never really been anything else I have ever wanted to do apart from act. But acting is not just a subject to study people, narratives or social issues – we can discover so many things about ourselves, why we perform a character this way: is it because this person is so much like us? There have been numerous qualities I have discovered about myself while participating in drama. In teaching, I have learn how to really connect with people and help them to explorer what their feelings produce and more notably, how we learn about others, about a single person just by the way they say a monologue

Teaching has been a great experience for me because it has given me the time to evaluate my own performance and teaching skill, learning to become that character just a little but more. This has also been enhanced by the performances I have taken part in, learning to work together in teams to realise the dream of the narration and the vision of the director (for nothing really exists without the vision or image)

While experiencing other aspects of the Performing Arts, I have found that is has increased my performance skill on whole and expended my knowledge on the performance world greatly, Dance, Art and English all focusing on similar issues such as the Commedia dell’arte, Henrik Ibsen, Physical Theatre and Movements and philosophies. These subjects have greatly complemented my time in Drama, and increased my confidence and ability in being a performer. Being involved in 5 consecutive school productions, 2 amateur productions, teaching experience and a student has really influence me concerning the determination I will put into a career in Drama and Acting, and just working with these people and directors have really bettered me in the way I act, see myself and carry on with my life. The Performing Arts is such a brilliant profession to work in, because there is so much opportunity to explore the world

I know that I can offer the performing arts the time, the expense and the spark that it deserves. There is nothing else in world that I would devote more time to than being on the stage or acting in the street, and with the passion and determination to succeed behind me, I will give that spark and flavour that acting and the performing arts is all about. I know I can offer so much, because it is the only profession where, maybe just for one night, I can become someone else and do a damn good job of being that person – and I can easily say that I can offer the world, because performance and acting is my whole world. As well as enjoying Drama, I have also taken a shine to Philosophy and finding the reason for irrationality, and I feel particularly moved in amazement by the work of Bob Fosse and George Orwell for their use of horror, sorrow and murder. And a great interest to the History of Art, because so much of the story of us is portrayed in Art and more so these days it is so unique how Art and Drama work together to produce movement, beauty and conception.##

Dear _,

For example, you may choose to write on a social issue

about which you are passionate, an experience that has greatly influenced

your life or taught you a valuable lesson, or about a challenge you have

overcome. These are only suggestions, however; the choice of topic is yours.

"Saudi Arabia? That''s a country Daddy? Where is it? Is it going to be like

it is here? Are there going to be playgrounds and ice cream?"

Those were just a few of the thoughts that began circulating through my

seven- year old mind. I was born in upstate New York and raised in Maryland, yet

of Lebanese origin. Out of nowhere, I learned that I would soon have to leave my

friends and the only place I had ever known existed; it turned my world upside

down. I was just like any other seven-year old girl; obsessed with Barbies,

playing dress-up with my mother''s clothes and jauntily leading a carefree life.

I was a very curious young child, always feeling the need to know something

about everything. I was outgoing and sometimes a bit obnoxious, but then again

who wasn''t at the age of seven? Soon after I learned of our move to Saudi

Arabia, everything changed.

I arrived in Saudi Arabia and experienced extreme culture shock. I learned

that in public, women have to be covered from head to toe by wearing what the

Saudis call an "abaya", which is a black cloak or gown that completely covers

the female body. Women are not allowed to drive, work, or closely interact with

men, and the weather is unbearably hot 11 months a year. The people spoke a

language unfathomable to me and I was on the verge of a breakdown. In this

strange, new country, I felt like a completely different person. I knew

absolutely no one. I went from being a happy, outgoing little girl to a girl

with no friends and no knowledge of anything around her, which of course was a

completely alien experience for me. What could Saudi Arabia possibly offer me?

Was I ever going to learn to tolerate the vastly contrasting culture and

lifestyle? The moment I saw the endless cascading mounds of sand and barren

earth, I was convinced that there was no way I was ever going to make friends

with people who were at home in this desolate and backwards country, who

nonetheless spoke a language completely foreign to me. I remember crying

everyday, begging my parents to take me back home; a place where I was perfectly

happy with everything and never complained. Soon enough however, I was placed in

an American school in the middle of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Over the years, I met

people who had also just moved from their countries and we all turned to each

other to share our thoughts and experiences in our new "home." Up until the

ninth grade, I remained a shy and reserved individual, as there wasn''t much for

a young girl to do in a strict and religious country like Saudi Arabia; or so I

thought. It was not until my freshman year that I broke out of my tiny,

introverted bubble and began taking an active role in my school surroundings. I

began getting myself involved in competitive school team sports such as

basketball and soccer; went on an international study trip with the school to

Switzerland and traveled around the kingdom as a member of Saudi Arabia''s

All-Kingdom Band playing the trombone with proud fluency. I even managed to

acquire the country''s native language, Arabic, and began to learn more about my

religion - Islam. I soon established friendships with individuals from various

countries such as Canada, Egypt, Jordan, United States of America, South Africa,

Brazil and Pakistan, just to name a few. The people helped me adjust to the

country, despite its desert-like climate and strict rules. Over time, we shared

aspects of our cultures and traditions, in addition to realizing that we all

have our similarities and differences. We developed a profound tolerance and

respect for the country we were currently living in. I soon realized that the

relationships I had developed in this country were the friendships that I would

value and cherish the most in the future. All of us being foreigners in Saudi

Arabia led us to come closer together and to confide in one another. I was

slowly becoming my younger self again; outgoing, active and most importantly,

happy. Looking back at my experience in Saudi Arabia, I have become aware of

what the country has offered me and I find myself taking back the feelings of

resentment that I had towards my parents for moving to this country, as well as

the harsh feelings I first developed towards the country itself.

After living in Saudi Arabia for approximately eleven years, I am happy to

say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience in the country, and have

realized that during my years in Saudi Arabia, I have had a unique opportunity

to live overseas and meet people from different backgrounds, religions, and

cultures. As a guest in the country, I have learned that Saudi Arabia has

offered me the opportunity to experience a culture that is different from my own

in many ways, and this opportunity has allowed me to be open and to accept and

tolerate different perspectives, traditions and beliefs. My exposure to these

different nationalities in Saudi Arabia has built on my foundations of cultural

awareness, rather than laying the cornerstone for it. I now see Saudi Arabia in

a completely different light than when I had first moved to the country. I no

longer see it as a country that is part of the world, but a country that has

brought the world to me.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

In capacity as Professor of Mathematics at Fudan University I''m writing to

recommend Mr.Wang Gesintosyour PhD program in Computer Science.I have known

Mr.Wang since his sophomore year of college and have acted as his thesis advisor

and mentor. In my experience he is agifted and diligent student and an admirably

hard worker.

Wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome the

significant challenge of aserious illness during his freshman year. When Ifirst

met Wang in my Discrete Math class he did not appear to be anything special to

me.While his exam scores were good they were not as high as Iwould now expect of

him. What Ididn''t know then was that due to his illness Wang was attempting to

take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one time including

Discrete Mathematics Advanced Mathematics Linear Algebra and Possibilities. While

most students found preparing for just one set of these exams diffic ult Wang

was overwhelmed by four of them. But in the end he achieved an impressive score

on the final exam which made me conscious of his unusual determination he

demonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.

Mr.Wang and Ihave often talked about avariety of mathematics and computer

science concepts and problems.During these discussions Ialways found him to be

delightfully intelligent. Not only does he quickly understand the concepts and

problems presented to him he is able to analyze these problems and present

solutions. But perhaps most important is that Wang''s thinking is intensely

rigorous. When looking at any question he carefully scrutinizes it and if he

finds any uncertain issues he clears them up immediately.I believe this kind of

thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.

Serving as his thesis advisor Ihad afirst-hand opportunity to observe the

way in which Wang''s mind works. In his senor thesis Mr.Wang mainly discussed two

challenging questions in regards to″A NN″.In our books in China knowledge of ANN

and its uses are very rare.Few people in China have studied this topic and

consequently the materials that are available on ANN are limited.Working on this

difficult project not only did Mr.Wang rise to the challenge but he went above

and beyond the call of duty to analyze his secondary sources and test them for

accuracy in practice. In this way he found mistakes in the book that we use.His

diligence and hard work made me extremely proud of him.

Mr.Wang is an intelligent motivated and industrious individual.Teaching and

advising him has been adelightful pleasure.I know that if given the chance to

study abroad in America he will arm himself to become agreat programmer he

dreams of being. He has the intelligence and background to achieve these

goals-now all he needs is the opportunity.I ask that you look upon his

application favorably and grant him achance to study in your university.

Dear _,

Literature can be seen as a microcosm of society, reflecting the

irregularities and inequalities that are present in everyday life. As an English

student, my initial interest in Law stemmed from its portrayal in fictional

works such as ‘To Kill a Mockingbird;’ however, it is the real life

applications, as explored in the Times Law supplement and films like ‘Erin

Brockovich,’ showing it to be both humanitarian and intellectually stimulating

that affirmed my aspirations to study Law.

A levels have given me the chance to explore and develop some skills that

would constitute a good Law student. In English Literature the ability to infer

information and substantiate a conclusion is essential; the component in AS

coursework to write a discursive essay “is King Lear a victim of circumstance or

a tragic hero?” juxtaposed the emotive element of a mans downfall with detached

facts. To arrive at a reasoned conclusion, it was necessary to look at the whole

picture and read around a variety of critical opinions in order to build up a

body of evidence in order to have an objective judgement. I am interested in the

ever-changing nature of Law as in order to better serve society or fairly

arbitrate cases with extenuating circumstances such as that of Kiranjit

Ahluwalia; initially given life for killing her husband after enduring 10 years

of abuse her sentence was later remanded.

Furthermore, I believe French is a beneficial subject, as through studying

French, my awareness of the structure and wording of English has also increased;

translating an article often takes much preparation and preciseness of language

to comprehend the intended nuance of meaning. In addition, Business Studies

requires a good knowledge of current affairs, reading around so as to have an

opinion on the many factors that could influence a business, there was also the

opportunity to study some aspects of Corporate Law; I was particularly

interested in the changing attitudes of society as reflected by the gradual

introduction of anti-discrimination Laws. Taking AS Psychology I studied topics

clearly associated with the practicalities of Law, questioning the work by

Loftus and Palmer on the reliability of eyewitness testimony; however, it also

gave me an insight into the depth of human nature and the factors that can

affect it. In particular, the work of Milgram showed me the need to question an

individual’s behaviour and the reasons behind it.

In addition, to explore the possibility Law as a profession I completed a

weeklong placement at a solicitors firm in Epsom. I was given the chance to

shadow a solicitor, alongside further reading such as ‘The Law Machine’ by

Marcel Berlins, this was invaluable in showing the realities and strenuousness

of working in this field. The necessity of a dedicated and diligent approach in

order to be successful greatly appealed to me and sustained my interest in

Law.

In regards to extra curricular activities, at my sixth form I have been

selected to be a prefect, a role requiring patience and persistence when working

with younger years. In the Young Enterprise scheme, which involved creating and

running a business, I was selected to be Managing Director by my peers for the

tuition service we established. The post required talking to large groups of

parents; in order to persuade them to become shareholders it was essential to

talk both persuasively and confidently. Also I work regularly as a tutor for

Explore Learning, teaching Maths and English to groups of young children, and do

voluntary work for the Epsom and Ewell Bengali association: I help elder members

of the community who don’t speak English fluently to fill in forms and write

letters. These activities have all given me the opportunity to communicate with

varying types of people in different circumstances, be it to clarify a

principle, promote a business opportunity or provide instruction.

A Law degree is not restricted to furthering my aspirations of becoming a

full part in university life.

Dear _,

am choosing geography for one main reason and this reason has many

subdividing links. I want to continue to study geography at higher education

because I find it interesting. I enjoy this subject because of its content and

the way in which it overlaps with so many other subjects. This therefore makes

geography a very useful subject and one I am very keen to continue to understand

and develop. Because geography overlaps with many other subjects and that the

course encompasses many techniques and skills I find it as being a very useful

tool in the future workplace. I enjoy finding out how and most importantly why.

If this includes why is such business parks situated on suburban fringes to why

does the global distribution of earthquakes effect human activates in that

particular area. I believe geography will develop my analytical skills which is

important because I want to become an intelligence officer in the armed forces.

I also like travelling and my knowledge and techniques have helped me explain

many things like reasons for terraced farming in areas of Maltaand

infrastructure in Florida. I teacher once said to me in secondary school.

‘travel, and your start to notice things around you and your be able to

understand what and why are certain things there’

I am currently studying A2 geography and biology. This is also accompanied

by AS physical education and an AS physics which I completed in my first year. I

am enjoying my courses this year because I find the content relatively easy to

digest as opposed to physics last year. I found this subject fairly challenging

last year because the content comprised itself mainly of numbers, figures,

theories and set equations which where some what difficult to interpret. As

opposed to the courses iamdoing this year where I find the content easier to

consume because I can relate it to visual situations. I enjoyed parts of the

course last year because there where noticeable links between the subjects. For

instants geography and biology cross over more than once during the year. I have

developed new skills such as my oral and working with others on coursework As I

noted above my aspirations for the future lay within the armed forces. I need to

have well developed analytical skills as well as good oral skills. Part of being

an intelligence officers is being able to annotate pictures and many other

sources of data i.e. infra red.

Studying geography will help me develop these skills to a standard well

recognised in my chosen field of profession. I’m also looking to travel in the

future and my knowledge of geography will help me understand the places I visit

in much more detail.

I have had one experience in paid employment and one work experience

placement. During my work experience I worked at H+S aviation. This is a company

that repairs helicopters and light aircraft. During my time here I experienced

the importance of meeting deadlines as these engines where urgently needed for

the customer. I also established working with a team and co operating with many

departments. One important skill I learned is attention to detail/ this was very

important because the slightest of inaccuracy could cause the aircraft engine to

malfunction causing death to the customer. During my paid employment I worked at

a café in ASDA. I learned many important lessons here like health and safety

along with food hygiene. I also exercised working in a busy environment and good

communication and team skills were necessary to achieve the goals. I feel that

many of the skills I have learnt are relevant not just to geography but life in

its self. Team skills may be put to good use in a fieldwork situation as well as

meeting deadlines and attention to detail. These all figure in some aspect of

the course and university life in general.

I enjoy sporting activities a lot and they are important in social well

being. I enjoy playing golf and especially football. I have reached semi

professional for Fareham town where I scored the winning goal on my debut at

this level, being only the third player to ever to do this. I have also had

trials with the major south coast professional sides such as Portsmouth,

Southampton and Bournemouth. I enjoy leisure activities such as fishing and

camping and I go away regularly in the summer to carry out these activities.

I also enjoy socialising with friends at the weekends but football usually

takes precedence over socialising. There are specific areas around the city

where these can be exercised together. I enjoy spending time with my family,

either going out for the evening, spending the weekend camping and fishing or

just play football or golf.

Yours sincerely,

bzuowen

Dear Professor ____

I am a student, graduated from BaoYang middle school, Nanning, GuangXi autonomous region, in 20__. I am still studying in high school now, because I was not enrolled by the ideal university last year. Recently, I have a dream to study abroad. Then I search online and find that it is more convenient and suitable for me to go to New Zealand for study.

First, New Zealand is a multicultural country, which has the most advanced education in the world. Second, the tuition is lower than other countries’, which I think is more reasonable for me.

Finally, the climate of New Zealand is similar with the climate of the South of China. Considering above reasons, I told my parents my plan on going to New Zealand for study, and my parent agreed with me.

As a girl, I like preschool education since I was young. Nowadays, Chinese parents, who want their children to get better education, pay more attention to preschool education. If I study specialized curriculums on preschool education, I will go back China and work hard on preschool education after leaving college.

My plan is as follows: first, I plan to study English in language institute for about a half year in New Zealand. Then, I will study specialized curriculums on preschool education.

I believe I have the ability of study abroad, because I have finished all high school curriculums. Besides, my parents both have job and have rich income, so they will support me to finish my study. After finishing my study, I will return to my homeland and work on preschool education, so as to realize my life value.

Ten years from now Tim Dickson wont even remember my name. The unknowingrecipient of my undying love for two years, Tim had been everything a girl couldever ask for: smart, handsome, witty, and athletic, with a voice that could makeangels weep. Everyone knew his name. To a shy little country mouse, nearlyinvisible in our student body, he was the epitome of manliness. I sat in mycorner of room C-119 and gazed adoringly at his profile as he amazed the classof Modern World History with his dashing style. Carefully planning the routes tomy classes to coincide with his, I was his silent shadow.

After fourteen months, contrary to my hopes, Tim still was not aware of myexistence. Determined to bring myself to his attention, I staged my entrance tohis heart with all the flair I could muster. I would breach his defenses at thenext history oral presentation in the guise of the dashing CardinalRichelieu.

It was now or never! Striding into the classroom, my head raised, eyesflashing, I stood proudly, the colors of my eighteenth-century costume catchingthe light and giving me courage. My opening line shook with tight emotion."Gentlemen, I am disgusted!" My voice alternately lashed out in rage and purredin soft persuasion. I gloried in my elocution. Each word was power. Dear _,

I have always been brimming with questions about the how and why of the

world around me. In fact, one of my biology teachers once commented in response

to my constant questioning that I was an extremely curious student and a

pleasure to have in class.

When in the 8th grade we began studying the three sciences independently, I

developed a special affinity towards biology and chemistry. Medicine was the

first thought that came to mind when I thought about a career in Biology and

Chemistry but I could not foresee myself working in a clinic on a day to day

basis. I was then introduced to my first Robin Cook book, ‘Fever’, the first of

many to follow. It was then that I realised how dependent the medical community

is on research and that there are a myriad career options that are open to a

research scientist.

Being a student of the International Baccalaureate program, I got a lot of

exposure to laboratory work which I thoroughly enjoyed. The International

Baccalaureate encourages its students to question knowledge and test theories

for themselves, an approach which suited me perfectly. The interdisciplinary

approach of the program to science helped me broaden my perspective of the scope

of research and crystallised my decision to study a course in molecular

biochemistry. India is on the threshold of becoming a world leader in clinical

research, however, the fact still remains that the leadership in innovative

research still lies in the hands of scientists trained in the universities of

Europe is what prompted me to apply to the your university.

What amazes me about this line of study is how all living organisms whether

complex or simple ultimately are a collection of cells, entities so tiny and yet

so powerful that they determine the nature of the organism. DNA is nothing more

than a chemical compound but what is it that gives it the capability to

determine the characteristics of an organism? How is it that cells communicate

using chemistry? What molecular activity determines the genetic makeup of a

species? The wide range of interrelated modules offered by your university will

lay a strong foundation before I narrow down the scope of my education.

My love and appreciation of nature’s mysteries has been strengthened

through numerous treks, camps and equestrian training and has found application

to this field of study.

Your university’s state of the art research facilities are what attracted

me to apply to your undergraduate course since the line of study and work that I

plan to follow requires just that. The opportunity to meet and interact with the

eminent scientists who are members of the faculty is something I really look

forward to.

My tenure as Head Girl and years in boarding school have honed my

organisational and communication skills and developed a sense of team spirit and

responsibility which will aid my academic and personal interactions at

university. Being in an international environment will contribute to the shaping

of my ideas on moral issues like the ethics of cloning and stem cell research

which need to be addressed by the research fraternity, of which I aspire to

become a part. I realise that the program requires commitment and hard work and

assure you that I will make a positive contribution to your department/it. I

hope to have the opportunity to interact with other international and local

students to further my interest in drama and theatre, my passion for music and

my love for sports. It would be a privilege to be an active and involved member

of the student community and to study at your university.

Yours sincerely,
