Gentlemen of the Jury:

The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith.

The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer.

He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

I can hadle it

I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity of despair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. It seemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. One evening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. It was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyone has survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrote these sentences “I tell myself I can handle it .Compared to what others have been through I’m fortunate”.

Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived my life would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my study in the university I always told myself “I can handle it” when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I said it ,I always came back to my senses.

Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my students complain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell the same story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handle their difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared to something better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will build up fortitude.

So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that can give us strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

Dear teachers, dear students:

hello everyone!

The topic of my speech is "the hardness of life"

The vast desert, a tree stand, the show is a monument to the image.

Towering mountains, thousands of tree stand up, as is a magnificent the

Great Wall.

The long river, all the trees stood up into a dragon of glory.

We are a symbol of too much, and too much. But I believe that my image is

not "the gentlest hands, skin, such as Diorskin" Lin Daiyu, nor is the modern

"unkempt and shabby", "Su Qier". We are a symbol of hope and vitality. So we

show in front of others should be inserted without pleats, face without scale,

modest and polite gestures exudes a stream of heroic spirit, the image of the

vigor and vitality of the modern new youth, a into the embodiment of the spirit

of nature.

Someone once said, life is a kind of hardness, integrity and dignity of

life is propped up the hardness of bone. "Better life" and "the Kui back in the

day, and not ashamed on the ground", which is always the traditional virtue of

the China. Li Bai's "the eyebrow nengcui Zheyaoshan powerful thing, so that I

may not be happy Yan" this awe inspiring atmosphere of the verse and whether it

will make those no self-esteem people to shame? Loss of self-esteem is a

worthless person, and we as the vanguard of the times, if drown in the darkness

forever, or to do a dauntless hero, a flower in the wind and rain sonorous rose.

The answer is self-evident.

Desert desolate also has the monument stands, Castle Peak again proud, but

also have the great wall around, the river again quiet, also there is a dragon

in the recumbent. But the time can be changed, our image, our glory remains the

same. Because we pride, because we are confident, because we have a fresh life.

And because of this, it is a vast desert riparian long, Qingshan was evergreen,

the hardness of life is forever.

I'm studying in a city famous for its walls. All visitors to my city are amazed by the imposing sight of the city walls, silhouetted by the setting sun with gold and shining lines. With old, cracked bricks patched with lichen, the walls are weather-beaten guards, standing still for centuries in protecting the city.

Our ancestors liked to build walls. They built walls in Beijing, Xi'an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great Wall, which snakes through half of our country. They built walls to ward off enemies and evil spirits. This tradition has been maintained to this day as we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public. I grew up at the foot of the city walls, and I've loved them since my childhood. For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world.

My perception, however, changed after a hiking trip to the Eastern Suburbs, a scenic area of my city. My classmates and I were walking with some international students. As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by taller and taller trees, which formed a huge canopy above our heads. Suddenly an international student asked me, "Where is the entrance to the Eastern Suburbs?"

"We're already in the Eastern Suburbs," I replied.

He seemed taken aback, "I thought you Chinese have walls for everything." His remark set off a heated debate. At one point, he likened our walled cities to "jails," while I insisted that the Eastern Suburbs were one of the many places in China that had no walls.

That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this international student. For instance, he told me that universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls; the campuses were just part of the cities. I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we are developing our country, we must carefully examine them, whether they are physical or intangible. We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede China's development.

Let me give you an example.

A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. However, the librarian turned down my request with a cold shoulder, saying, "You can't borrow this book, you are not a student here." In the end, I had to spend 200 yuan buying a copy; meanwhile, the copy in law school was gathering dust on the shelf.

At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university has started not only to unify its libraries but also link them up with libraries of other universities, so my experience will not be repeated. Barriers will be replaced by bridges. Through an inter-library loan system, we will have access to books from any library. With globalization, with China integrated into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.

I know globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. But one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to China's tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their roles in the modern world.

And how about the ancient walls in my city and other cities? Should we tear them down? Just the opposite. My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. These walls attract not only historians and archeologists but also many schoolchildren trying to study our history and cultural heritage. Walls have turned into bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great change in the role of their walls. They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world. Our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Today my topic is The Road Not Taken in Life.

“Why are you doing this? Don’t you know it’s a total waste of time?” That’s what my mom yelled at the ten-year-old me, when she found out that I had signed up for an English story-telling competition.

I bowed my head; yes, she was right. By then I was entering Grade Six, faced with the biggest challenge yet to come—the examination to enter my dream junior high school. For that, I had given up my beloved piano lesson, my favorite cartoon program and even the playful weekend family reunion with my cousins. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if my very-strict-university-teacher mother got furious at me when I chose to do anything besides study at that crucial moment.

But that’s not all to it. Now please take a good look at the twenty-year-old me, and imagine what I was like when I was ten. Here are the key words: nervous, timid, shy, tongue-tied when facing strangers, and essentially a bookworm. These signs looked fatal to my mother, and possibly to you, too; she thought that I could be anything but a good public speaker.

Well, I myself actually said no to my English teacher at first, because I had never done anything like that before and I was afraid. But he told me since I liked reading so much, why not try to tell a story I love to everyone? He also promised me that the judges were not frightening at all; just think of them as carrots and cabbages in a vegetable patch.

The ten-year-old me was persuaded by my teacher’s words. The feeling of telling my beloved stories to someone else ignited a spark of anticipation in my little chest. So I chose to endure my mother’s ranting for an entire hour, then raised my head bravely and pleaded: “Mom, please. I just want to try.”

My mother looked as if she was on the verge of another outburst—but she only sighed. I took that as her permission, and started working with my teacher day and night to find a story, to illustrate the details, and to practice my facial expressions and gestures in front of the mirror. On the day of the competition, I went on the stage for the very first time in my life; I could feel the nervousness threatening to bring me down, and I felt cheated by my teacher: it was impossible to picture the judges as mere carrots and cabbages. But I went on. Although I only got the third prize at that time, on that stage I stayed ever since, even to this very moment.

I should thank my teacher and my mother for letting me take a road that I have never taken before. Little did I know then that this road would one day lead the shy little ten-year-old me into a wonderland; it led me to meet all of you here today. I can tell you from the bottom of my heart that it isn’t so terrifying to venture into the unknown at all; all you need is a little courage and determination. See where my road has led me, and bravely take your first step.

My Attitude towards to Marks

For our students, marks is above everything. Teachers will judge us from our

marks. With marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. With marks, we

can be enrolled into senior middle schools. With marks we can be enrolled into

college. With marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrine studies.

Still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad for further

studies. Our parents will be strict with us with the marks. Our society judge us

from marks. However, sometimes we students compare one another with marks

directly. We are completely controlled by marks. We like them and we feel sorry

for them. But what attitude towards our marks should we take?

Truly, marks functions cannot be underestimated. In terms of test in our

study, marks are fair and real. That is the reason why we say "Everyone is equal

before marks. "

However, I think marks are the sole standard to judge the success or failure

of students in exams. Sometimes, marks more than ten or less than one or two in

our exams comparing with others mean not everything. The success or failure in

exams will be influenced by experience on the spot and the examinee’s health

etc. Once in a while one cannot fail in exams. " Success or failure is common

sense for military. " I think everyone is familiar with the famous saying. Don’t

you think such will be the case with our study? In exams, one cannot be "

never-defeated general" . Even though one will be very good in everyday study,

he cannot succeed in every exam sometimes. We can get proof from the fact that

the very best one we call "Number One Scholar" in the entrance exams for college

and ordinary middle school and specialized secondary school over the years is

not eminent above all others nor top student in every study.

As a matter of fact, "high marks" and "ability" are not unified. Some time

ago, a new phrase " high marks but poor competence" came into being. Once I

happened to meet such a teacher as this .It is said that the teacher just

graduated from a far-famed key university. But his teaching result is much less

than that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. When

lecturing, the teacher only repeated what the text-books says, which was very

dull so the his students’ interest in learning was not aroused. His teaching was

short of unity of teaching and learning. At present there is a fact that we know

a few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified for their posts. The

reason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from books

with pragmatics in their work. Students of this kind will be successful in every

exam but they will be able to use freely their knowledge in their posts. Don’t

you think it waste training such persons for the country?

To sum up from the above, I can say marks are not absolutely authoritative

for some. If we neglect training and developing the students’ ability and

competence and if we only seek for the high marks, we will be absolutely wrong.

We should take an objective attitude towards the marks. Neither should we

neglect them nor should we overvalue them like a God.

I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.

Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.

In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.

One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, Could you please explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time. I started explaining, and finished in a hurry. Pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly. Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself. I simply couldn't forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? Why didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?

I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word responsibility and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.

Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.

The difficulties young Chinese university graduates have had in finding a job

over the past few months have been making the headlines in the media and causing

concern throughout society. Education professionals in China have all had

something to say about it.

A good number of them, referring to the current phase of social transition in

China, have come out in favour of the mass education programme that has been

practised in recent years in Chinese universities. Others have raised doubts

about the reliability of the figure of only 70% as the rate of employment for

new graduates, which they consider to be alarmist. In fact, according to the

statistics provided by the Ministry of Education itself, out of the 2.12 million

graduates in the general higher education sector in 2003, 640,000 had not signed

a work contract by the end of their studies In these circumstances, it is

understandable that in the current labour market in Shanghai, for example, new

university graduates are settling for a monthly salary of 1,200 yuan, slightly

more than double Shanghai’s minimum wage, at the same time as they are having to

face significant overheads (superannuation, unemployment insurance, health

insurance, etc.).

If we take into account the cost of living in Shanghai (including

accommodation, transport and telecommunications), it would appear that the

salary of these graduates is barely enough to cover their basic needs . The

purpose of this article is to better understand the current unemployment of

young graduates, beyond any proposals being put forward in the context of higher

education reform.

When I was still a freshman in college, one Scottish professor complained to me about being overcharged at a grocery store. He explained that many business owners in China would assume that white “foreigners” are rich and unable to understand Chinese. My amiable professor, unwilling to start a conflict, would always pay the undue price even though he was only meagerly paid by my university and was able to speak perfect Mandarin.

As a student of humanities, I’m particularly intrigued by the ramifications of cross-cultural encounters entailed by the new era. We have to bear in mind that whenever we talk about the new era, there is always an old era that keeps haunting us in various ways. Last year I went to the University of Tokyo for a one-year exchange program. Before I left, my grandma seemed quite distraught and apprehensive: she told me to take care of myself as if I was about to go to the battlefield.

But we Chinese are not the only ones infested by outdated misconceptions. When I was bidding farewell to my American professor at an academic writing class in Japan, she stopped me and asked me, “Are you really from China?” At first I thought she was pointing at my handsomeness, asking me whether I had been to Korea for plastic surgery. Well, clearly this is another stereotype that we should get rid of. But to my disappointment, she was actually referring to my English skills. “I’ve never met any Chinese student who can talk and write like you do,” She said, “You must have been stayed in the States for some time, haven’t you?” It does seem that even a specialist in linguistics can’t escape the illusion built up by the last generation of Chinese students: gauche and diffident, unable to articulate themselves in English.

Nevertheless, such stereotypes are becoming a thing of the past. When professors around the globe meet with an increasing number of students from China with both language proficiency and academic competence, well-qualified students will no longer be a surprise. Moreover, with more people going abroad and enjoying firsthand encounters with different cultures, people like my grandma will no longer be subject to the fossilized, antiquated narrative of the past. The interesting thing is, after I told my grandma my experiences in Japan, how clean, safe and beautiful their cities are and how nice, polite and considerate their people are, she gladly removed Japan from the list of least-want-to-visit foreign countries and put it instead to the most-want-to-visit one.

Even the shop owner near my campus is now repenting for his peccadillo. When gradually more international purchasers become his patrons, he would no longer treat them differently. And he would even occasionally call out for them, yelling “come, come,” “cheap, cheap,” “thanks thanks” with a very strong Chinese accent. Meanwhile, my Scottish professor has now equipped himself with Wechat and Alipay, assimilating seamlessly into the local life here.

The old era is like a cocoon, protecting us from possible dangers outside and providing us with warmth and comfort. However, an overreliance on memories and experiences of a long-gone past can also hinder us from genuine, meaningful interactions for the future, just as the cocoon can also serve as a wall to bar us from the beautiful world outside. But in order to make a brand-new attire or to build a modern silk road, we have to plunge the cocoons into hot water and obtain the silk despite the pain. So ladies and gentlemen, don’t be trapped by the old era. Transcend it, and embrace the new one.

Thank you.

I was seventeen, almost a senior in high school. I was riding my bike to school. I had taken a special route to pick up a gift, but that day, "the road less traveled by" led to disaster. Crossing a road, a drunk driver ran a red light, slammed into me, and shattered my left knee.

It made all the difference.

I was forced to postpone college, plunged into painful therapy . . . but eventually, I also learned much about life and myself. I found the strength to withstand adversity, learned compassion, and above all, I learned that the road not taken is not just about regrets or choices but also about the perpetual now and the always-coming future.

21世纪杯英语演讲比赛 吴柏德参赛讲稿

When I first studied Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” in middle school, I was unable to grasp its ambiguity. I always thought that Frost’s persona chooses “a road less traveled by” and lives life being subversive and irreverent. I was wrong. In the poem, both of the two roads that “diverged in a yellow wood” are actually “about the same.” But there has to be a choice, and sometimes, they it can be involuntary (as I learned the hard way). This makes me extremely thankful and resolute when I can make conscious choices and plan for the future, and so I know now that Frost's poem is also about "the road not [yet] taken."

For everyone, this means something slightly different. For me, it means constant vigilance, learning, and love. Our journey is hard, complex, and it often presents unexpected twists, but reflecting on the roads not taken and not yet taken each day gives us a little more strength and confidence. Life cannot and will not me perfect, and the truth is it will end. But as Willa Cather would say, “The end is nothing, the road is all.” The road not taken in the past, and the road not yet taken that lies ahead.

But about the present? It joints the past and the future. What then, is “the road not taken” in the perpetual now? Personally, I find an answer in these lines from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Ulysses”:

Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and though

We are not now that strength which in old days

Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are

One equal temper of heroic hearts,

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Thank you.

First, I would like to know, what does your destiny offer you? Happiness,

wisdom, a strong body or something else. If I had asked this question to

president Nixon, he would probably had said,”Our destiny offers not the cup of

despair, but the chalice of opportunity.”

Needless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to China is the 20_

Olympic Games. Till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. How

much changes have you seen? New roads, new subway lines, public-exercising

equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of

modern gyms which are under construction.

Other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the

Olympic Games that cannot be seen directly. For example, more and more people

will get to know China. I’m sure the mysterious Chinese culture will attract

them strongly. And the games will also do good to the economy and environment,

for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of

environmental protection is being strengthened. What is more, Olympic Games give

a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of Chinese youth

with the Olympic values and the Olympic spirit. Now that we have seen so many

advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?

I’ve already said a lot about the Olympics and China. But I think everyone

should use some time to think of this question, ”Does the Olympic Games have any

special meaning to you?”

For us, I mean the Chinese youth, 20_ Olympic Games is a tremendous gift.

Because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying the

love given to us .The society is just like a ship, and in our dreams the captain

is waving his hand and saying ”Hey! Come here and take the helm! ”How charming

his voice is, but we have never heard of it in our true life. This morning,

however, when we wake up, we will see the Olympic Games waving its hand. After

chewing, most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the Olympic

Games. And mine is to be a “comforter” ----that is someone who will give comfort

to others.

At the end of my speech, I hope all the preparation will go well, and

everyone will show their ability to the world. Let us seize opportunities and

give a big smile to challenges.

The Old Cat

An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not run quickly, and she could not bite, because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse; she jumped and caught the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.

Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, "Do not hit your old servant. I have worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am too old. Do not be unkind to the old, but remember what good work the old did when they were young."
